General

  • Peaceful, rural and hidden away site on 68 acres of woodland
  • Campfires encouraged
  • Toilets, hot showers, laundry room and communal fire area

Have a secluded and hidden away stay at peaceful and rural Ashbourne Woods near South Brent in Devon, in a range of accommodation to suit all outdoor holiday sorts.

The site is set on 68 acres of woodland, fit around a growing forest with accommodation areas carefully laid out by the helpful and friendly owners, and is a mere ten-minute stroll from a cosy and rather fab eleventh century pub. And as befits a rural and tucked away site such as this, campfires are encouraged here, so bring along the sausages and marshmallows for toasty evenings under the Devon stars...

Ashbourne's main camping area has a shared fridge for essentials and a communal fire area, as well as water facilities, toilets, hot showers and a laundry/washing up area with hot and cold water and coin-operated washing and drying machines.

Pups are barking up the right tree at Ashbourne Woods too - they’re welcome across the site and accommodation types, and the two and a half miles of dog-walking tracks nearby will make a stay for pooches here anything but ruff.

Such a lovely campsite. We went out of season so it was only us and one other couple. But it's a great set up and lovely wooded campsite.

    Disliked:

We didn't really get a welcome as the owners were on holiday, which was fine but was tricky when we wanted to ask about certain things in the area but it was pretty easy to figure out.

Have just got home from an awesome 5 days and we have had a blast! Ashbourne Woods is a great family friendly campsite with everything you need (even a pub in walking distance!).
Lister and Helen do a great job and I can't wait to bring the kids back again 😊

    Disliked:

Our visit was at the end of the season so I suspect that this will be dealt with anyway before the next season but the shower curtains in the ladies showers could do with a clean and maybe a few more wheelbarrows would make things easier at change over. Apart from that I really could not fault the place and we will definitely be back!

From the manager...

Hi Amanda
Thanks for that i will make a note for the cleaners but we do change them at the start of the new season, i understand about the wheelbarrow but believe it or not we do have 12 of these but people seem to hide them and think they are just for their use, i seem to spend my day walking around looking for them its a shame they aren't more considerate to other campers, look forward to seeing you again,
Kind Regards
Helen

  • Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (wild)

  • Liked:

Location of the tent was private and it looked very beautiful. We had a fire in the fire pit every night. We took advantage of that by cooking our food on it and even toasting marshmallows.

    Disliked:

The ground was very muddy after a downpour of rain. We were a little bit too far away to get to the toilets at night for the children.
The aminity blocks needs updating. Pitch levels in the wooded area were very uneven and we had stumps from tore down trees under our communal room. It made doing anything in the tent awkward.
We were set the furthest away from the aminity blocks and by have 5 kids in our group it was very hard. There should have been one small toilet at the ends of the camp.

From the manager...

Hi Louise,
You are right the ground does get muddy when it rains.
You, not us booked a wild pitch not stating that you needed to be next to the toilets.
The amenity blocks get muddy when it rains and were new this year.
You chose you pitching area not me.
The amenity block was 125 meters from your site.
And the last coment would be why i found toilet roll and waste near your pitch.
Thanks,
Lister.

Loved it very muddy but your camping in woods so have to expect mud and with the weather we have been having this summer it was to be expected. Pitches were spaced out well and the fire pit was an added bonus very friendly site from reception to other campers . There have been reviews that state the showers and toilets need updating but i found the toilets clean and the showers hot .the location is ideal for visiting local attractions we shall 100% be returning but children coming next time the no cars on site rule is brilliant and theres barrows provided to haul your stuff to your pitch which just adds to the fun of it .
You wake to birds singing and go to sleep with owls hooting there is the faint rumble of the a38 but didnt bother me that much all in all was fantastic

Local attractions

Tucked away needn’t mean being stuck for things to do... Set in South Hams on the south coast of Devon, the campsite is just off the accessible A38, ten miles from the sea and less than a mile from Dartmoor National Park.

Half an hour’s drive away is Compton Castle, a manor with orchard-filled gardens for apple-y ambling around, while the National Trust’s Church House on Dartmoor is just over a 20-minute drive north. For active types, horse riding and sailing can also be jumped upon around Dartmoor and on the coast.

Cast a line to Hatchlands Trout Farm, just ten minutes by car, ton fly fish on the well-stocked rainbow trout lake, or try the coarse fishing also available in the surrounding areas: ask the Ashbourne Woods team to point you and your rod in the right direction.

As well as the nearby beaches to treat and tire out, day trips to keep little holidaymakers happy also include Pennywell Farm (less than five minutes away) where animal fans can snuggle the pigs, collect eggs, help feed the lambs and even try their hand at milking the goats; Woodland Family Theme Park for daredevil youngsters (just 30 minutes away), with rides, falconry display and zoo farm, and Staverton Steam Railway, the first choo-choo-choice for little locomotive fans.
