Prepare for shrieks of merriment and mirth when you tell the kids that they’re going to Crealy Meadows Caravan and Camping Park just outside Exeter– we think they’ll be crealy crealy chuffed. And if the kids are crealy chuffed, chances are you’ll be too…
The park is right next door to Devon’s award-winning Crealy Adventure Park to reach dizzy heights at over 60 rides, attractions and indoor play areas – and there are ‘own a pony’ experiences on site where small campers can help the caravan park rangers look after a mini Shetland, Dartmoor or Spotted pony. And if the mood takes whoever’s paying for the pitch, the family can even stay a few knights in luxury medieval pavilions. (Spacious and level pitches for tents, tourers and motorhomes are available too.)
Everything at this £1.2 million development is brand new and bang up to date: scrupulously clean new family bathrooms, washrooms with underfloor heating, a launderette, on-site wifi, a new shop and bars, restaurants and takeaways to pig out and sup at – try the all you can eat buffets at Mamma Mia’s or sample the wares at the Sandcastle Beach Bar’s Oggy Oggy Pasty Company.
If you’re planning to visit the adventure park without kids – because big folk should have fun too – part of Crealy Meadows is reserved for non-family groups outside weekends and school holidays. So all sorts of crealy good fun to be had, even (especially?) without the kids.
The area around Crealy Meadows leads straight into the Devon countryside, with the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Woodbury Common pretty much on the doorstep: let the kids loose to continue their knightly pursuits by storming around the Iron Age hill fort Woodbury Castle. The common has the biggest area of open heathland in the country, hills and valleys to hike or bike, and a golf club established by Nigel Mansell to its north.
It’s a short drive from Crealy Meadows Caravan and Camping Park to Junction 30 of the M5 and from there only five miles to Exeter; if you want to leave the car behind, the park is on the main bus routes for Exeter, Sidmouth and the Jurassic Coast. All three are tiptop for day trips once you wrestle the kids away from the theme park rides – we recommend a quaff on the historic quay at Exeter after a trip around the ancient cathedral, digging into the history of the area at the Jurassic Coast Interpretation Centre on Sidmouth’s esplanade and from there meandering along the coast path to Beer and Branscombe. Dartmoor, where the kids can see the park ponies’ relatives in the wild, is also a short drive away.
Nearby Exmouth is a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, but hang around here for a bit before going on the hunt of dinosaurs: the main beach at Exmouth is two miles long and is renowned for its watersports. There’s a protected windsurfing and kitesurfing area at the smaller and pebbly Shelly Beach, where dogs are welcome all year round (they’re banned from Exmouth Beach and many other beaches in the area during the summer).
From Exmouth, it’s a pebble throw to Budleigh Salterton with its famous red sandstone cliffs, and from here you can go on to Lyme Regis and Dorset to arrange guided fossil walks at the Lyme Regis Museum, hike the South West Coast Path or drop into some of the many villages about to carefully contemplate which Devon or Dorset café does the best cream teas.
