  • Site with its own private airstrip with restored aircraft
  • Within easy reach of Branscombe beach, Seaton and Beer
  • Safe and enclosed play area; 2 games rooms; plenty of space for play

Branscombe Airfield and Camping is four miles from Sidmouth, Seaton and Beer, on the edge of Branscombe village and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on Lyme Bay.

The site has its own private airstrip, home to a range of vintage and classic aircraft including a Tiger Moth, a Stearman and a Waco. The resident pilots and restoration team are happy to show guests the current lineup of aircraft and you'll also see occasional flight activity.

Branscombe has plenty of wide open space with views of Devon countryside and distant sea views. There are refurbished toilets and free showers, as well as a new utilities block; a washing-up area and a launderette with washing machine and tumble dryer.

There's also a safe and enclosed play area with plenty of space to play football and other outdoor activities, and a small indoor games room also available. Foodies will find two Good Pub Guide pubs within a mile and a half – one within a short 10-minute stroll.

MALE TOILET FASCILITIES WERE NOT QUITE SUFFICIENT ie: 1 toilet, no urinal and only 2 sinks. ( On busy periods people had to wait outside)
Some porta-loos scattered on site though.
I thought that £21 per night for 1 tent and 1 person was a little bit too much.

Location. Playground. Games Room. Scenery. Peaceful setting. Friendly & helpful staff. Football pitch. On-site shop. Reasonably priced pitches. Reasonably spaced pitches.

    Disliked:

Not enough showers. Only 4 low pressure showers for the entire site isn't enough. There are only 6 proper toilets on the site too.

The lovely countryside location. Had plenty of space to pitch our tent. The kids play area kept our kids entertained for ages. The owners were lovely and very approachable. The onsite shop came in very handy.

    Disliked:

Not quite enough showers however the owners know this and they are planning on doing something about it. If you don't mind waiting a little bit the showers are lovely.

I can highly recommend this site. Beautiful location, giant pitches. The camp site was quiet after 10 pm. Our boys (13 and 15) liked the game room equipped with with table tennis, table football and comfi couches. Good (free) WiFi around the reception building (would be nice to have WiFi on the pitches as well, but we used the roaming of our cell phone). We stayed here for 10 days with our tent-trailer. There is so much to do in the direct environment. Lovely nature. You can e.g. take a hike from the campsite via public footpaths via the valley and visit the Beer Quarry, hike to the see via the village (National Trust),etc. The staff is very friendly and helpful. On our arrival, they showed us the way to the pitch. The camp site is not large and there is no way to get lost on this camp site (so you do not need a map of the site itself). Children can play safely. Large supermarkets are in Seaton (Tesco, 16 min drive) and in Sidmouth (Waitrose, 11 min drive). There is a pub with good food (Fountain head) at walking distance (15 min) from the campsite. Bathrooms were clean. During our stay, there were 2 or 3 planes that landed/took-off. The kids loved it.

    Disliked:

Disliked nothing really, but as a suggestion, it would be nice to have more toilets/bathrooms.

Local attractions

Stay at Branscombe at the beginning of August to frolic at the world-famous Sidmouth Folk Week, or mosey along to this part of Devon at any time of year to ramble and rockpool on Branscombe Mouth beach, be tempted by tasty treats in the thatched roof restaurant or take a boat out to land some mackerel and pollock for supper.

Branscombe village has the Old Forge, the Old Bakery and the Norman St. Winifred Church to see, while the regency town of Sidmouth five miles to the west has a sauna, cinema, indoor pool, restaurants and gift shops as well as beaches for splashing and sunbathing.

The fishing village of Beer is nearby: this sheltered beach is the spot for catching the sun’s rays, and if you don’t want to angle yourself from a boat to cast off, you can buy some fresh fish on the beach before getting on your mining helmet to explore the Beer Quarry Caves or climbing the hill (sans helmet) to the model railway exhibition and gardens at Pecorama. Cavers and trainspotters can also try the Kents Cavern Underground Caves and the South Devon Railway, both at Torquay.

Devon day trips include browsing for lace in the market town of Honiton, taking a tram from Seaton along the River Axe for birdwatching at the estuary, fossil-hunting at Lyme Regis, history hunting in Exeter at Exeter Cathedral and wandering the National Trust walks over Exmoor and Dartmoor.

For the small fliers, the Crealy Adventure Park, Paignton Zoo and Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium should have them soaring.

Must see
