General

  • Site with its own private airstrip with restored aircraft
  • Within easy reach of Branscombe beach, Seaton and Beer
  • Safe and enclosed play area; 2 games rooms; plenty of space for play

Branscombe Airfield and Camping is four miles from Sidmouth, Seaton and Beer, on the edge of Branscombe village and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on Lyme Bay.

The site has its own private airstrip, home to a range of vintage and classic aircraft including a Tiger Moth, a Stearman and a Waco. The resident pilots and restoration team are happy to show guests the current lineup of aircraft and you'll also see occasional flight activity.

Branscombe has plenty of wide open space with views of Devon countryside and distant sea views. There are refurbished toilets and free showers, as well as a new utilities block; a washing-up area and a launderette with washing machine and tumble dryer.

There's also a safe and enclosed play area with plenty of space to play football and other outdoor activities, and a small indoor games room also available. Foodies will find two Good Pub Guide pubs within a mile and a half – one within a short 10-minute stroll.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Location was fabulous for walking. Very quiet with superb views across to the sea. Lovely owner met us on arrival and was helpful and flexible with regards to pitch, particularly as the site was very water logged.

    Disliked:

Toilet facilities were relatively clean but not very many. Was fine for this visit as campsite practically empty but would not want to come at busy times.

Lovely friendly staff, Really warm welcome when we turned up on the Friday as the first of our group, showed us the pitches and let us choose one that suited us. Really good toilet and shower facilities which we maintained to a superb level. Nice communal areas, but we didn't really use them as we had our own in our little camp of three vehicles. Very generous pitch sizes and the ability to have a fire was really nice. Once of the best camp sites I have been to for a long time.

    Disliked:

Due to the sites location it is very prone to mist and fog, during peak season I doubt this would be an issue but this weekend we had about 4 hours of sunshine and glorious view but the rest of the time was windy, foggy and misty. But this was not too bad as this was the only thing against the site and you can't control the weather.

The other little niggle was that the WiFi only reached the main areas and the toilet and shower blocks. But can't complain as it is Free Wifi and we were at the furthest point away from the main buildings.

Good sized pitches . Clean shower and toilet facilities. Great views. Lots of space for children to run around with a good play area. There's a utility room with washing and drying machines a fridge and sinks to wash up. Also the added bonus of the airfield and planes.

    Disliked:

The road approaching the site is quite narrow but quiet and the locals are used to reversing into the hedges. Also most of the pitches are grass so if it's wet weather then the ground gets very soggy and muddy.

We came for a long weekend we accidentally took the turn for Branscombe and ended up completely stuck with a wedding and a harvest festival fete at the bottom of a steep valley and then a steep drive back up to the top , haha after my husband nearly had a nervous breakdown we finally managed to find the Airfield we were pleasantly surprised ,our view over rolling hills was beautiful ,enclosed dog exercise area was great as we foster a dog ,shower block was very clean and tidy and we enjoyed the peace and quiet this campsite has to offer , perfectly situated for exploring .We enjoyed our stay very much. My advice is read instructions on how to get there as I skimmed them and wish I had read them properly and do not take the turning for Branscombe .

Local attractions

Stay at Branscombe at the beginning of August to frolic at the world-famous Sidmouth Folk Week, or mosey along to this part of Devon at any time of year to ramble and rockpool on Branscombe Mouth beach, be tempted by tasty treats in the thatched roof restaurant or take a boat out to land some mackerel and pollock for supper.

Branscombe village has the Old Forge, the Old Bakery and the Norman St. Winifred Church to see, while the regency town of Sidmouth five miles to the west has a sauna, cinema, indoor pool, restaurants and gift shops as well as beaches for splashing and sunbathing.

The fishing village of Beer is nearby: this sheltered beach is the spot for catching the sun’s rays, and if you don’t want to angle yourself from a boat to cast off, you can buy some fresh fish on the beach before getting on your mining helmet to explore the Beer Quarry Caves or climbing the hill (sans helmet) to the model railway exhibition and gardens at Pecorama. Cavers and trainspotters can also try the Kents Cavern Underground Caves and the South Devon Railway, both at Torquay.

Devon day trips include browsing for lace in the market town of Honiton, taking a tram from Seaton along the River Axe for birdwatching at the estuary, fossil-hunting at Lyme Regis, history hunting in Exeter at Exeter Cathedral and wandering the National Trust walks over Exmoor and Dartmoor.

For the small fliers, the Crealy Adventure Park, Paignton Zoo and Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium should have them soaring.
