  • In a Dartmoor wildflower meadow
  • Back to basics site with campfires allowed
  • Bushcraft, yoga, massage and lots more available for guests

Back to basics camping within Dartmoor National Park – but with forest school, bushcraft, tree climbing, yoga, massage, reflexology, martial arts, drumming and kickboxing all available for a reasonable charge on site… you'll like the way Old Mine House rolls.

The amenities here are deliberately basic – there's a shower, flush loo and compost loo but no electric hook-up or dishwashing facilities – and the site is in a wildflower meadow with plenty of room for the kids to run around.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome, and as you'd expect for a trad camping site, campfires are most surely allowed. Cooked meals are available at an extra charge.

I hired the Gypsy Caravan with my 6 year old ... 14/09/2017

I hired the Gypsy Caravan with my 6 year old daughter and I loved the secluded site the Gypsy Caravan was on. It was nestled in the woods of the Old Mine House's grounds. The owners no longer have general camping so it was really quiet and my friend was able to park her campervan near the entrance to the woods so we could enjoy camping together. The site had Geese and Guinea Fowl wandering around. It was perfect wild camping with a touch of luxury in the Gypsy Van. The bed was so comfy and it was so dark at night we slept better than at home. We had a fire every night and the owners supplied us with plenty of wood. There are some beautiful places in Dartmoor and if you're looking for a wild, back to nature, quiet, non-commercial campsite - hire the Gypsy Van and stay here.

None of the solar lights outside the Gypsy Caravan worked or came on.

The drive up to house is a little rocky and I missed the entrance to the house twice - make sure you read the instructions to where they are located and don't rely on Sat Nav.

    The location was lovely...

Cabin was very damp and smelly, and unmaintaintained.Bedding felt unclean 😢any food we purchased was soggy by the next morning (biscuits, crisps). Washing up facilities poor and utensils worn and well used. The toilet and shower was a good walk away, and there was only one of each to service the whole site... sadly this was unclean also and again rather smelly. Felt very let down on arrival as the website promised so much but the reality failed to deliver. The rear of the cabin was boggy, and the canopy of trees although lovely kept the area in shade so even on a sunny evening you did not see much sun 😢...

From the manager...

So sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay. Unfortunately due to the weather being extremely wet before you arrived, the cabin can get damp, hence the dehumidifier supplied, and surrounding area does get boggy. The canopy of trees has grown so much this summer with the rain and sunshine and its on our to do list to clear a few trees back to let in more sun but still provide shade and privacy.

If you had spoken to us when we delivered your extra wood about your concerns regarding the cleanliness of the bedding and cabin we could have addressed them. If you felt the bed sheets were unclean we would have been more that happy to change them for you, however I can assure you they were put on fresh and clean on the day you arrived.

As stated on the website, this is a back-to-basics experience. All extra activities are available at an extra cost as advertised, but must be inquired about either when booking or during your stay.

Thank you for your feedback, all feedback is welcomed and we thank you for taking the time to write this review.
