General

  • Family-run park on a former stud farm and in a wildlife haven
  • Two and a half miles from the coast
  • Heated outdoor pool, bar, café, shop, takeaway and craft centre

Not able to decide which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation - walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park.

On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy.

Nature lovers will champ at the bit to delve into the forty acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others.

Meanwhile, beach boys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch.

On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas for the small ones, walking trails and nature all around (the park is a David Bellamy Gold Award winner), a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, letterboxing and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar.

Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Really really loved this campsite! We have had a touring caravan for about a year and have been really disappointed with how dirty the shower blocks have been on a lot of sites but this site was brilliant the showers were lovely and clean and they even had a family room with a bath! This is brilliant if you have young children and I haven’t seen this on any other site before.
The night time entertainment for the children was great and the staff couldn’t be nicer. It was a great for our two year old son as the music wasn’t stupidly loud.
We ate in the main restaurant, the cafe and from the takeaway and all the food was brilliant. The full English was really good quality well cooked food and the evening meals are really well priced and very nice food.
We spotted 3 different parks around the site witch is great to keep the kids busy.
I would highly recommend this site to people with young children and who like clean quiet campsites. We will be back!

The campsite was beautifully kept with mature trees and surrounded by Devon countryside. The facilities were good with excellent dog walks. Our 12 and 11 year old children enjoyed the swimming pool and jacuzzi. The food was excellent and good value for money.

We were welcomed and shown to our pitch and the staff were all lovely and helpful. The view was glorious. We were very impressed by the dog friendly side. We come across a real mix, but Whitehill really is dog friendly. There were blankets in the dog friendly end of the Hayloft where they were allowed and plenty of walks. The facilities were all well kept and clean. We ate in the Hayloft on the last night and it was delicious and good value for money. The girls loved the swimming pool, a real bonus.

Excellent place - very clean, lovely views and excellent facilities. Breakfast was delicious and reasonable price, the staff were great! The location was in good distance of Paignton and other seaside towns all accessible by car. Other people staying at the site were really friendly too - great all round! : )

    Disliked:

If you like to walk to places on foot from the campsite to access e.g. coastal paths then this is limited (to my knowledge).
Signal was poor and you have to pay for WIFI connection...but camping is all about being outdoors without technology!

Local attractions

Whether you’re a meticulous planner or prefer to do things on the hoof, the sights and activities around this part of Devon will suit all tastes: Dartmoor National Park for active adventures, Totnes and Dartmouth towns for history, heritage and a sneaky bit of shopping, historic rivers meandering through the countryside, vintage villages, gorgeous walks and cracking coastline - and the 22 miles of beaches of the English Rivieria with seaside towns, watersports, fishing and boat trips...

The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is award-winning and family-friendly Goodrington, between Torquay and Brixham and a mile south of Paignton. Once you’ve stretched out on the red sands or had a dip in the warm water (wakeboarding and windsurfing are popular here too if you’re feeling active), Goodrington has a few other options to check out: learn about the history of the English Riviera at the free Seashore Centre, pedal your way around the boating lake, or take the kids to the go-karting park or to the eight waterslides and pools of Splashdown at Quaywest.

Younger visitors will also go gaga over the inhabitants at nearby Pennywell Farm and the thousands of animals at Paignton Zoo, only a mile from Whitehill.

Living Coasts is a popular aquarium and less than five miles away in Torquay, and there's probably not a kid or big kid yet who hasn’t been enthralled by a puff along on the Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway: take the ferry ride afterwards to Dartmouth for a leisurely harbour cruise to Kingswear passing Dartmouth Castle, Britannia Royal Naval College and Greenway House.

Combined steam and cruise tickets are available and you can pick up children’s colouring sheets at the Kingswear station visitor centre so they can try and spot the local kingfishers, herons, seals and dolphins. Dizzier heights - and spectacular views - can be had at Torquay’s Babbacombe Cliff Railway from Babbacombe Downs to Oddicombe Beach.

For more timely pursuits, the spectacular and award-winning Kents Cavern has exhibitions, events and activities alongside its prehistoric caves; overground, there’s a woodland trail and fossil hunt, and the site is about ten minutes from yet another beach.

The English Riviera is of course also Agatha Christie territory – she used Kents Cavern as the setting for her novel The Man in the Brown Suit, and Greenway House was her holiday home (this was also where David Suchet as Poirot filmed his last scenes. Sniff.)

If you can’t make it to the annual Agatha Christie festival (tsk), amble along the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay with its ten landmarks including the Torquay Museum and Agatha Christie exhibition; eight of the sites have clues spelling out the name of a Christie character. Hint: it’s probably not ‘Miss Marple’.
