  • Two and a half miles from the coast
  • Heated outdoor pool, bar, café, shop, takeaway and craft centre
Dithering re which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation – walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park. On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy. Nature fans will champ at the bit to delve into the 40 acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others. Meanwhile, beach buoys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch. On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas, walking trails, and nature all around; the park has won awards for its approach to wildlife management and conservation. Also around are letterboxing opps, a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar. Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Spacious pitches Clean amenities Friendly reception team Dog friendly Spacious communal areas; loos/ washing up area, showers Dog shower Two play parks plus extra swing area Great facilities; soft play, indoor pool, bar/restaurant Tasty well cooked food in restaurant- generous portions Well lit & you felt safe on site

Disliked: Laundrette expensive £4 for a 25 minute wash & 50p for 10 minutes tumble No change machine on site that gave 50p’s (bar changed them) Pitches were horrendous after the rain. Awful red/mud. No phone call in advance to prepare us for this or even an option to postpone or upgrade to a vacant caravan. Wifi doesnt work in softplay/granary so no signal when trying to call family for dinner Some pitches were on a sight hill so made sleeping arrangements a little difficult ensuring we were right way up! We had a noisy pitch so when kids club kicked out there was no consideration for anyone. Loud speaking, noisy scooters. Luckily our little ones didn’t wake.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Facilities at Whitehill fantastic. Added extras such as soft play, colouring and arcades were very welcome. Swimming pool well organised and lovely facilities including family showers. Woodland walks great, toilets on camp very clean and well looked after.

Disliked: Hard standing pitch was lacking in gravel and very muddy. Site can’t help the very heavy rain this year but felt like more gravel may have helped. Also mud is very red in this region so is very obvious when it gets around. Wi-Fi also very patchy, came up ok on camping pitch but then non existent in soft play area when you’d expect to get it

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Toilets looked brand new, very modern and always perfectly clean even in heavy rain! Who site is spotless. Pitches pretty level and very easy to get into pitches. A warden shows you to your pitch to save on you following a site map. Staff member showed us where all toilets etc was on arrival.

Disliked: The entertainers were amazing but very little entertainment for kids, first week of season so this could of been the reason why. You have to pay for the pool and only get a one hour slot. You could book things like 'Teddy making' for kids but it costs extra. The WiFi was pointless! No signal any where site and WiFi was very poor! Personal opinion is site is for adults and not children. ¹

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful surroundings Well kept park Good facilities Close to local attractions Friendly staff Lovely swimming pool

Disliked: Pitches hard standing area could have been a bit wider we didn’t put up an awning and had to park the car on the grass which at this time of year was wet and muddy. Would have been nice if the pool price was included in the stay rather than having to pay separately.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Friendly staff, beautiful setting, facilities on site, bus stop at entrance. We loved the Halloween trail - such a lovely thing to have available as an extra which we didn't have to pay for, and our little ones loved their goodie bags.

Disliked: Food in the restaurant was expensive and wasn't great quality. Paying extra for swimming pool given that the cost for the pitch wasn't the cheapest.

Local attractions

The sights and activities around this part of Devon will suit all tastes: Dartmoor for active adventures, Totnes and Dartmouth for history and heritage – and the 22 miles of the English Rivieria for beaches, watersports, fishing and boat trips. The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is Goodrington, a mile south of Paignton. After you’ve stretched out on the red sands, there are a few other options to check out: learn about the history of the English Riviera at the free Seashore Centre, pedal your way around the boating lake, or take the kids to the waterslides and pools of Splashdown at Quaywest. The English Riviera is of course also Agatha Christie territory – Greenway House was her holiday home (also where David Suchet as Poirot filmed his last scenes. Sniff.) If you can’t make it to the annual Agatha Christie festival (tsk), amble along the 10 landmarks of the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay; eight of the sites have clues spelling out the name of a Christie character. Hint: it’s probably not ‘Miss Marple’.
