Appledore Park: Apple glade

General

  • Small, peaceful site two miles from Okehampton
  • Coarse fishing lake and enclosed dog walking area on site
  • Shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and accessible area

Make your way to Appledore Park, two miles from Okehampton near the north Devon coast. With 4,500 recently planted trees and hedges (so far), spankingly clean facilities and so many little extra touches, ‘awesome’, ‘top notch’ and ‘knocked our socks off’ are just a few of the accolades Appledore has received from grateful guests.

There are nine acres of site land at award-winning Appledore, all with sweet views of the Devon countryside and the park’s surrounding farmland, and landscaped to hold spacious pitches. Dogs are welcome, and handily, there is an enclosed dog walk through the trees or a large field to let them run in.

The site's only five minutes' drive away from the A30 road to Cornwall, so it has easy access to the moors and as well as Cornwall, north Devon's beaches.

If you’re arriving late, there’s a special late arrivals area with hook-up and water so you can get settled quickly (cuppa). To this smart idea, there is wifi throughout, a washing-up and veg prep area, and a room with charging points and info on the surrounding area. The amenities block has underfloor heating, private cubicles and an accessible area for disabled guests – and are so well maintained they've won a Loo of the Year award.

Finally, fancy some fishing? Appledore Park has its own coarse fishing lake for guests and you can also cast off from the quay at Appledore village, take a boat out to the sea (the coast is around 30 miles from the site) or try your luck landing salmon or trout on the River Torridge.

Loved this site. Small and carefully thought out. Staff were incredibly welcoming - called about coming early and took my booking requests on board and were so thoughtful in the pitch the gave me.
    Arrival process super simple.
Some of the best facilities I’ve seen. Lots of loos and showers - immaculate. Wash up area clean and had everything you needed. Dog wash down area just perfect! Lovely big field and dog wood walk for the doggo.
Would have stayed longer but awful weather so a change of plans.

Large pitch, lovely views, clean toilets, secure dog walking area, friendly staff and went above and beyond to get us and our friends pitches together. Nice to be able to use fire pits.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but a worth mention recycling more clearly labelled to separate the waste. Fishing lake was smaller than anticipated but it did fish well!

Facilities were good and wardens very friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

Lot of road noise even though the road was closed in Okehampton. No 4G or mobile signal and site Wi-Fi was an extra £4.00 a day. When you are paying a premium for a site this was excessive. Main problem though was with a couple who were near us with two large and incredibly noisy dogs. They barked at anything and everything that moved, and with the toilet/shower block opposite them, that was every few minutes. The wardens seemed to know them quite well and we assume they are regulars, but nothing was done about the barking. By the evening of our third day we could stand the constant noise no longer so we left.

From the manager...

Firstly we are surprised about your comment on road noise, surely every site with a road next to it you would expect some noise? Phone signal isn't brilliant as we are rural, but it depends on your netwoek provider, I guess you were just unlucky. Wi-fi again is a problem being rural, thats why we had to go with a pay to use Wi-fi supplier, and those that use it are happy with the speeds etc - you get what you pay for. If you buy it for a week it works out around £1 a day??
The other camper with the dogs is a regular visitor for last 2 years and we have never had a complaint before. I think it is worth mentioning that you had 2 dogs, that most of the time were not on leads as they should of been, and no doubt set the other dogs off barking??? The wardens picked up dog mess around your pitch a few times, and asked you if everything was ok - there is only so much we can do. You can't please everyone

Wardens were easily approachable and friendly and sorted any problems instantly if they came up.
The site was very well looked after, clean and tidy. Great toilet and shower facilities, use of a small washing machine and fridge with freezer if needed during your stay. The separate washing up area, again always clean and tidy.
Location was central so all coastlines were not too far away and town with plenty of food shops and restaurants also easy to by car.

    Disliked:

The site is right next to a road that sometimes sounds like a race track at night but that didn't ruin our holiday there.

Appledore Park is two miles east of Okehampton on the B3125. Satnav systems may guide you through lanes unsuitable for caravans, so follow these directions for the best towing route.

Exit the A30, signposted Okehampton, B3260. Head in the direction of Okehampton. At the traffic lights by the police station take the right-hand lane signposted Hospital, then turn right. Local attractions

Start off at Okehampton to see the ruins of 11th-century Okehampton Castle and explore the industrial past of Dartmoor at Finch Foundry, England’s last working water-powered forge. The Museum of Dartmoor Life, an 18th-century mill with info on the moors throughout the ages and a reconstructed Bronze Age fort and Victorian kitchen, is at the town’s West Street.

Nearby Castle Drogo, ‘the last to be built in England’, is now a Grade I-listed building looked after by the National Trust, with the Trust’s highest garden, rose gardens and paths snaking below into the gorge of the Teign valley. ‘Perhaps the most famous walk in Dartmoor’ (so says the NT) is the circular walk from Castle Drogo, above the Teign and along Hunters Path to cross the river.

The nearest sands are Bude and Widemouth Bay about 45 minutes’ drive away.
