General

  • In a secluded Devon valley a couple of miles from the coast
  • Adjacent to three coarse fishing lakes
  • Within 15 minutes' walk of the nearest pub

What a well named site this is. For Rocombe Valley Retreat near Newton Abbot in Devon is indeedly in a valley, and is a peaceful bolthole from bosses and the like: we're sure work wouldn't find you were you to settle down here for a matter of weeks.

The retreat is also spiffingly well set in its Devon locale, with its glamping units in a field beside a stream and three mighty pretty lakes, all a couple of miles from Devon beaches and a piffling ten-minute drive from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Torbay. The nearest pub, serving food and ales, is a 15-minute walk away, and four more pubs and restaurants are within a five-minute drive.

All Rocombe Valley accommodation comes fully equipped with cooking equipment, cosy double beds with all bedding supplied, and woodburning stoves using wood coppiced from trees on the farm. Flushing toilets and hot showers are within easy reach in the farm amenities blocks.

There's parking on site for several cars and coarse fishing is available on the lakes adjacent to the valley.

Everything. Peaceful setting. Each yurt has its own gas camping stove outside, firepit and rable/chairs. Plenty of pots/plates/glasses/cutlery. Next to a field with sheep and 2 gorgeous bullocks. The yurt was really big and clean. Bed was very comfortable. Showers were rally good. Perfect place to escape to.

    Disliked:

There was a very big step to get into the yurt but I have a busted ankle. Might be awkward for smaller children.

Very peaceful site, great fishing and great atmosphere. Owner is very helpful and informative to what's near by and directions. Great you have the fire pit in the evenings and the little log burner inside the shepherds hut kept the heat going all through the night. Can't wait to come back soon. We had a sneak peek in the other accommodation types and they looked great. For a couple the shepherds hut was perfect

Just returned from a stay in the shepherd's hut. The wood burner kicked out some heat! If you're cooking breakfast, don't take eggs! Buy them from the owner. You will not get fresher or richer yolk - delicious. If you're looking for an escape from everyday life, this is the place to stay. The only noise I heard was the occasional car passing by & the fishermen on the adjacent pond, oh, and the sheep!

I whisked my boyfriend away to Rocombe Valley Retreat for his birthday. We were lucky in that we had the whole place to ourselves, but it would not have infringed on our privacy if there had been people staying in the other huts.
The whole stay was absolutely perfect. We arrived right in the middle of the lambing season so our immersion into nature was just that much better.
I would highly recommend a session in the hot tub late at night. If you're lucky enough to get a clear night the sheet of stars in the sky is breathtaking.
Pete was a wonderful host and gave us pointers on where to go. We walked the circular coastal walk around Maidencombe, drank pints in the local Church Inn Pub and ate pies at the Wild Goose Inn in the next village. All recommended!

We stayed in a yurt which had a lovely, rustic theme. The furniture was laid out in a way that even with all the futons extended, there was still room to move around comfortably. The wood burner let out a lot of heat and baskets of firewood were only £5 if we ran out. The toilets and showers were clean and warm and only a short distance from the accommodation. Peter, the man who owns this campsite, was a fantastic host. nothing was ever too much for him and he looked after us exceptionally well. The hot tub was a huge bonus which we got to ourselves for nearly the whole day & it was lovely to sit in and star gaze at night. Overall a great getaway and a bit of a digital detox! Would definitely recommend.

Site was very clean and tidy. We were welcomed by Peter who was very friendly and accomodating, showed us around then left us to it. The smaller yurt we stayed in was beautiful, very clean and the bed was comfy. All equipment was provided and there is a large communal area with fridge and fire pits etc. Toilets were very clean and shower was powerful, not what you expect at a campsite! I recommend making use of the hot tub for an extra £40, it was so relaxing after a long day of wandering around Devon.

    Disliked:

No dislikes, however I would say it was very dark at the site and more lights in the yurt and outside on the decking would be helpful!
