General

  • In a secluded Devon valley a couple of miles from the coast
  • Adjacent to three coarse fishing lakes
  • Within 15 minutes' walk of the nearest pub

What a well named site this is. For Rocombe Valley Retreat near Newton Abbot in Devon is indeedly in a valley, and is a peaceful bolthole from bosses and the like: we're sure work wouldn't find you were you to settle down here for a matter of weeks.

The retreat is also spiffingly well set in its Devon locale, with its glamping units in a field beside a stream and three mighty pretty lakes, all a couple of miles from Devon beaches and a piffling ten-minute drive from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Torbay. The nearest pub, serving food and ales, is a 15-minute walk away, and four more pubs and restaurants are within a five-minute drive.

All Rocombe Valley accommodation comes fully equipped with cooking equipment, cosy double beds with all bedding supplied, and woodburning stoves using wood coppiced from trees on the farm. Flushing toilets and hot showers are within easy reach in the farm amenities blocks.

There's parking on site for several cars and coarse fishing is available on the lakes adjacent to the valley.

Well maintained, peaceful campsite. Delightful yurt with plenty of space. Very peaceful location to relax in but also not far from nearby towns for shopping. Handy communal area with fridge and freezer as well as a cooker if you did not wish to use the camping stove outside the yurt. Plenty of logs for the wood burning stove to keep the yurt warm at night. Helpful host, Peter, always on hand to deal with anything and give local advice for places to go. Clean showers and toilets, with no queues and plenty of hot water. A lovely place to relax.
    Top tips:
take a torch for night time, check the location on google maps as the post code on sat nav takes you near but not quite at the location, The Wild Goose Inn had fantastic food on our last night, the hot tub is good but can get very hot (it's not thermostat controlled as uses a wood burner to heat the water), Walk along some of the Southwest coastal path towards Shaldon

    Disliked:

The narrow local roads are not for the feint hearted! but there is nothing to dislike about this place and we'd love to go back and stay again

Had a lovely weekend at mid-September at Rocombe Valley Retreat, staying in a yurt. The site is clean, the owner friendly and the countryside and the surrounding villages are just beautiful.

Some fab places nearby for food (Church House Inn did some great pub food), and you're close to the coast with Shaldon and Torquay just down the road.

The yurt was lovely, the bed comfy and really warm, the log burner helping to keep the chill away. Everything had been provided, so we pretty much just had to rock up with clothes and toiletries.

It's a small site - there was a safari tent, a couple of other yurts, a Romany caravan and a shepherd hut, along with a communal kitchen/dining area with fridges, freezers, ovens and so on and two toilet/shower blocks, each with two toilets and two showers. They were clean and well maintained, but the shower stalls aren't the biggest in the world and getting changed back into clothing and drying off afterwards was a bit of a squeeze.

The accommodation wasn't squeezed up close, so you had a good amount of privacy, but still had a friendly feel to the place and everything is close enough to be social.

Given the site's location at the bottom of a valley, was also pleasantly surprised to discover that we had really good mobile phone signal, too.

A couple of things to note:

    - It's a working farm, and there was a rather enthusiastic cockerel who liked to make sure everyone was awake bright and early. It didn't bother us particularly, but some people might not appreciate it.

    - It could probably use a little more car parking. There was enough room for about four cars to park on the site, which meant one night we had to park in the fisheries car park because there weren't any spaces free.

    - This part of Devon is beautiful, but it's super rural and you access the site via narrow, windy roads. We had a couple of close calls with people hurtling around corners, so take the roads slow and steady.

The hut was charming and well decorated. The location of the hut provided a peaceful and relaxing holiday. It was well situated for privacy and with very few other accommodations on site it felt like there was plenty of your own space. There was good, functional facilities (toilet and showers). The surroundings were beautiful with a lot of wildlife to see and enjoy. I will definitely go back!

This place is absolutely beautiful and Peter is a wonderful host. Very clean and comfortable amenities with stunning views, my partner and I are already planning on returning. We made use of the hot tub on a sunny day & Peter kindly checked with us several times that the heat was OK. If you visit I'd definitely recommend using the hot tub and getting a glass of something to sip whilst taking in the scenery. Peter also recommended several pubs and eateries and on our last evening we walked the short journey down the country roads to The Wild Goose Inn. This place is a gem and made our last night there very special. The surrounding areas make for beautiful walks no matter the weather.
We stayed in the yurt and really enjoyed making our own fires in the evenings and cooking outside. We can't wait to get back!

An excellent site with 4 yurts, gypsy caravan and shepherds hut along with barn for washing up and eating. Very well maintained site with lots of space to run around. Excellent showers - a very nice luxury when camping! There was also a pizza oven which someone else tried successfully and a hot tub which no one used. Excellent yurts with lots of space even for a family of four. The owner was there several times a day and sorted any issues very quickly and was overall very helpful.

    Disliked:

Some of the roads were a bit tight getting to the site but the directions were very clear. The roads are only to be expected in this part of the world.
