  • Wild camping on a working organic farm
  • Entertainment barn with sofas and tourist info
  • Guided walks, Dartmoor tours, archery and clay shooting available
The facts, given straight: Horizontal Leisure Club near Devon's Newton Abbot is a place in which to lose yourself for a few days (or maybe weeks). There's a full 15 acres of woodland for guests to spread themselves out among: you'll spy peace, you'll spy quiet, you'll spy maybe getting lost for quite some time… This is wild camping on a working organic farm where the inhabitants include South Devon and Red Devon cattle, complete with occasional calves, as well as Texel sheep lambing in early March or thereabouts each year – and all quietly set about 10 miles from Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren. The farm has an entertainment barn, the Pound House, with sofas, tourist info and a bar/counter: settle down here on wet days or maybe just to relax after a Devon explore. Speaking of which, the farm team can arrange small 20-minute guided farm walks through ancient woodland, or tours of Dartmoor in a Land Rover Discovery. Archery and clay shooting with lessons for novices is also available on site. Mains water, litter bins, and fire extinguishers are provided for guests, and there's also a portable toilet. A pub owned by Horizontal Leisure Club, the Palk Arms, is just over a mile away and dishes up food and real ales, alongside splendid Devon views from the restaurant over the Teign valley.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Basic campsite for a good old fashioned camping! Very quiet and peaceful 😍 We absolutely loved it! The site was lovely and in a perfect spot, the views were spectacular. Acres of land you can walk or to just relax and enjoy your time on the site by your tent. Had a firepit, portaloo and a shed with a couple of chairs and also some leaflets. Nicholas the owner was an absolute gem and very accommodating. He even came and greeted us and had a good chat aswell. He was very helpful with directions also and his dog was beautiful and friendly. He even recommended a few places to visit and what we could do if we wanted to explore around the area or further afield. We mainly had the site to ourselves except for another local couple who was camping for a few days which was fabulous as we made new friends which in turn made the weekend even better. We will definitely recommend this site to anyone who loves basic camping. And we will definitely be back for sure maybe even stay long than 3 days next time! Thankyou again for an amazing stay Nicholas, we will return 100%.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing!!!!!!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Picturesque site with an amazing view across the teign valley. Beautiful green hills of Devon all around you. Very basic, but that's why we went. Has everything you need, running water and a portaloo. Nicholas was very helpful with directions and advice for the best pitch. An amazing sunrise which then bathes the site until around 9pm before it dips behind the woods. We had a small fire in the pit which kept us warm after the sun set. Very quiet apart from bird song which you cant complain about really. Will definitely be coming back at some point and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to get away for a night or more.

Disliked: Nothing.

From the manager: Dear Gavin, What a fantastically kind review and so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Although simple it is a good site for de-stressing. With working life more and more sophisticated and deadline orientated these little campsites can at least let nature wash over you even if the birdsong is a little loud! WE are likely to add a Yurt to the offering soon for those who want to "crash" without the hassle of putting up a tent. Thanks again Nicholas

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Supported wild camping... It was great. Nick is very helpful. There is running water, a portaloo, small shed with one or two chairs and a fire pit. That's it. Perfect. We had it to ourselves. We could barely hear anything but the birds and wind in the trees. It was very nice and picturesque. It was close enough to the main road to Plymouth to be quick to get to, yet also far enough away, we couldn't hear the road and it was away from it all. There is a little slope on the field, but certain bits are flatter. We would recommend bringing your own wood if you want a fire, as any you collect will be either green wood or damp from recent rain - not good for fires.

Disliked: Nothing really

Local attractions

The particular part of Devon around Horizontal Leisure Club has some fab fishing (and walks) nearby at the Trenchford, Tottiford and Kennick reservoirs, with boating also available on Kennick; a climbing centre at Chudleigh Rocks, and walks along the nearby River Teign. The seaside towns of Teignmouth and Dawlish are both around 10 miles away and worth a day each; Teignmouth has a pier and day boating trips to the Torbay area (Torquay, Paignton and Brixham) as well as occasional trips to Dartmouth (for Agatha Christie tours). Dawlish is one of the best places in all the land to spy birds too, at its RSPB-owned sandbar warren. Also well worth a look, the cathedral city of Exeter is 12 miles away.
