General

  • Modern stays in Dartmoor National Park
  • Just outside a moorland village and with woodland views
  • Dogs welcome

Had a baaaad week at work? Filled with shear determination to have a woolly good break overflowing with luxury and glamour? Flock to Dartmoor Shepherds Huts for a stay in Dartmoor National Park.

The huts here were added brandly new to the site in 2012 and are fully insulated with wool from the site’s own sheep, so remember to baaa thank you as you frolic past.

And, while they’re traditional in style, they're properly modern and up to date: timber-built, fully-equipped and sleeping up to four people (two in the double bed and another two on airbeds).

There are moor points here for the site’s location: pitches are in a peaceful Dartmoor valley with woodland views on one side and the Holy Brook on the other, just outside the moorland village of Holne and in an area packed with activities for all ages and tastes.

Naturally there are traditional Devonshire cream teas and the best of local produce around the area, but as it would be knit-picky to camp on Dartmoor and not cook over a traditional campfire too, all pitches have their own firepits and wood is available to buy from the friendly owners.

Dartmoor Shepherds Huts welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Me and my boyfriend loved it here!!
Its cute and not overcrowded. You are about an hours walk to the gorgeous views of the moors which was a massive bonus for us.
All the facilities were clean and in working order. You definitely need a car for this trip.
Will definitely be going again :)

Beautiful location, lovely site in the middle of dartmoor lots wildlife lovely stream surrounded by trees the fire putts were great and sizes of pitches brilliant.

    Disliked:

On website says children's play area (there is no play area) which was annoying as part of the reason for staying with a 1 year old and 5 year old was we could play in kids area a rope swing and a tyre didn't quite cut it and not very safe for the ages of my children older kids might like it but big big shame. The showers were basic and clean however very cold and had more water coming out a tap I would of been better rolling around in the stream. Not to much of a problem for me but again didn't shower kids as too cold and just a trickle of water iam used to wild camping but again of offering showers be nice to actually have good working hot ones.

From the manager...

I'm really sorry to hear the showers were not running well and not hot, I don't know why that would have been as they are on a pressure pump and set at 45 degrees....I have checked them after seeing your review and they seem fine but sorry again...wish you'd said. I think your right that our woodland play area which is minimal isn't suitable for very young children but it is very much enjoyed by the children that come hear.

Very pleasant peaceful location 18/08/2017

Lovely peaceful site, in a very rural location (very narrow roads leading to the site!). The facilities were basic but clean- commensurate with the price. There is one ladies & one gents toilet and shower, and then a unisex block with 2 toilets and showers, plus one wash up sink so was a little concerned that there would be queues, but never had to queue at all even though site was full. There is a rope swing and stream to entertain the kids and the fire pits are great. If you are in the bottom area then you need to cross the stream to get to the toilet block, there are stepping stones but wellies are a definite bonus! There is plenty to do in the area, but travel takes a bit longer then expected due to the narrow winding roads.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike, but a bit more tourist info on site would be useful- not usually a problem but mobile reception is very patchy.

A friendly, quiet campsite, my kids loved it.
    Clean toilets and showers.
Loved being able to have a fire on our pitch. If I came again I'd book one of the Shepherd's huts; they looked really nice.
There are no kids play areas or anything, I liked that but it may not be your thing.

The site is small and out of the way which makes it a quiet place to stay. Facilities are fine, you can use a communal fridge, and washing facilities which are clean and tidy, toilet and shower are adequate but again clean and tidy. Overall I am very pleased we chose this site over others

Directions

Leave the A38 at either Ashburton or Buckfastleigh junctions (depending which way you're coming from), and follow the signs for Holne.

When you arrive at Holne, pass the pub on your right and continue up a hill. The road takes a sharp right. Follow the road until you reach a sign for Michelcombe and take a left turn there. Then when you reach a small bridge, follow the sign to the bridle path. Our farm is at the end of that road on the left. Take the lower gravelled track.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food...dive into the middle of the Westcountry’s larder to sample loads of local produce in the area’s restaurants and pubs: the Church House Inn a mile away at Holne shouldn’t prove to be too strenuous a walk back to base once you’ve munched your way through the fresh fish, Dartmoor venison or ploughman platters on offer.

If you decide that you need to walk off the Devonshire delights, you won’t be far away from plenty of scenic sights: there are heather-covered hills, wild Dartmoor ponies and walking routes all nearby, along with ancient archaeological landmarks such as stone circles, cairns and clapper bridges.

Climb a tor to have your breath taken away again by the scenery below: this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a mix of woodland, reservoir, valley and cave habitats.

A few miles further afield, start off at the High Moorland Visitor Centre to find out everything you need to know about Dartmoor’s history, wildlife and culture, then go on a history tour to take in Buckfast Abbey and Devon’s castles or take a wildlife trip to the area’s farm attractions Pennywell Farm, Totnes Rare Breed Farm and the Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary.

If you’ve had one too many cream teas (it’s easily done) and prefer to take in the scenery while sitting down, steam along to the South Devon Railway for valley views from Buckfastleigh to Totnes.

There are baleloads of family attractions in the area for you all to flock to: let the kids walk on water at the award-winning River Dart Country Park, ape the baboons and gorillas at Paignton Zoo or goggle at the sharks at the UK’s biggest aquarium, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
