General

  • Modern stays in Dartmoor National Park
  • Just outside a moorland village and with woodland views
  • Dogs welcome

Had a baaaad week at work? Filled with shear determination to have a woolly good break overflowing with luxury and glamour? Flock to Dartmoor Shepherds Huts for a stay in Dartmoor National Park.

The huts here were added brandly new to the site in 2012 and are fully insulated with wool from the site’s own sheep, so remember to baaa thank you as you frolic past.

And, while they’re traditional in style, they're properly modern and up to date: timber-built, fully-equipped and sleeping up to four people (two in the double bed and another two on airbeds).

There are moor points here for the site’s location: pitches are in a peaceful Dartmoor valley with woodland views on one side and the Holy Brook on the other, just outside the moorland village of Holne and in an area packed with activities for all ages and tastes.

Naturally there are traditional Devonshire cream teas and the best of local produce around the area, but as it would be knit-picky to camp on Dartmoor and not cook over a traditional campfire too, all pitches have their own firepits and wood is available to buy from the friendly owners.

Dartmoor Shepherds Huts welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Please note

Large motorhomes not fit through the local narrow lanes. Please check road guides.

I loved the stay here! Had a beautiful time with my girlfriend and the puppy; location, area, noise, facilities, everything was great and well worth the money!

Would highly recommend as a cheeky weekend getaway and will definitely be visiting again! I didn't really want to leave in all honesty...

Would recommend bringing a few wall hangings for extra privacy and a cooler box.

    Disliked:

The shower was a bit temperamental and from the pictures it indicates that it's very remote but the huck hut was right next to the communal toilets but aside from that it was a beautiful few days :)

Cosy shepherds hut, need to cross river to get to it. 09/04/2018

Pod was lovely and cosy, handy to have running water in hut.
Hanging space for clothes. Bed comfy, would need more pillows, but that’s a personal preference.

    Disliked:

A broom would’ve been good, to sweep out the hut.
Our hut didn’t lock at all.
Would’ve been good to have local information available ie pubs to eat at within walking distance. Tried Tradesman Arms at Scoriton on first night, was lovely, but on the Saturday night, went back there, and it was booked for a private function. Had already found that pub in Holne had closed 2years earlier, so stuck for where to go, on foot.
We didn’t want to make too many trips across the river, to get from hut to ‘outside world’. Wasn’t aware we’d need to cross the river in our car.
Ended up going home on Saturday night, rather than travel out to find a pub, and the thought of more rainfall flooding the rice was part reason.

From the manager...

Sorry you felt you couldn't cross the stream. Most people are happy to cross but there is room to park before the stream and cross over the stone bridge. If you choose not to cross, the walk is less than 1 minute! It's not far at all!

Comfortable camping in a shepherds hut. Beautiful location. 02/11/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Andrew T. Confirmed

I loved staying here. Think of it as camping with a few luxuries rather than staying in a house or caravan and you will be happy too.

The sound of the stream and owls at night is peaceful. On a clear night the dark sky means you can see so many stars. The fire pits really transform the experience and are a great idea. The horse is friendly.

You can walk for miles without needing the car and some of the most beautiful parts of the moor are within easy reach - there's no point in driving more than a couple of miles. Walk to Bench Tor, Venford Reservoir or drive to Sheep Tor, Bel Tor, Dartmeet and so on.

    Here are some practical tips:
Bring the yellow Dartmoor Ordnance Survey map. It shows all the footpaths and terrain better than Google does.
Bring a big cooking pot with a lid so you can make stews, fry without the fat spitting or cook on the fire. A small sharp knife for chopping veg or opening packets is a good idea too.
If you drink beer bring a pint glass.
Bring lots of tea lights, lanterns or candles.
    Bring a torch.
Bring fire lighters and a small amount of firewood. It is available but just to be sure you have some.
Bring a warm coat so you can sit outside for longer.
Buy fresh food every day as there's no fridge. Buckfastleigh and Ashburton have shops and there is plenty of food to choose from.
There are takeaway places in both towns and more pubs than you will ever need.
There's no need to bring extra bedding for the double bed, even if it's cold. There's a nice warm duvet and lots of pillows. You should bring any other bedding though.
If I was coming with kids, or more than 2 people, I would bring a little tent for them to sleep in.
A portable gas heater is a great idea if you think it's going to be cold.
Anything that needs plugging in won't work. My phone worked outside some of the time. (EE, iphone 6)
The toilet was clean. The shower was warm and free.
Trago Mills is a cheap source for anything you might have forgotten: camping gear, cooking gear, clothing, gas, books. Just google it.

We really loved the location..wonderfully tucked away above the village of Holne, where you HAVE to go and support the village shop and tearoom, it's gorgeous and Impressive it is able to run.

Everything is well signposted and labelled at the camp and the toilets and showers are good. The fire pits are also great and there is good parking and run around space for dogs. The bed was comfortable too.

It seems a very relaxed set up based on trust.

    Disliked:

We thought it might have been nicer to have met the owners, even if it was just a note in the cabin or a hello in passing. We just had a few questions like where would you like us to wash up as there is no sponge? And also i think in the hut we were allowed towels but we didn't know who/where to ask.

Directions

Leave the A38 at either Ashburton or Buckfastleigh junctions (depending which way you're coming from), and follow the signs for Holne.

When you arrive at Holne, pass the pub on your right and continue up a hill. The road takes a sharp right. Follow the road until you reach a sign for Michelcombe and take a left turn there. Then when you reach a small bridge, follow the sign to the bridle path. The farm is at the end of that road on the left. Take the lower gravelled track.

Large motorhomes not fit through the local narrow lanes. Please check road guides.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food...dive into the middle of the Westcountry’s larder to sample loads of local produce in the area’s restaurants and pubs: the Church House Inn a mile away at Holne shouldn’t prove to be too strenuous a walk back to base once you’ve munched your way through the fresh fish, Dartmoor venison or ploughman platters on offer.

If you decide that you need to walk off the Devonshire delights, you won’t be far away from plenty of scenic sights: there are heather-covered hills, wild Dartmoor ponies and walking routes all nearby, along with ancient archaeological landmarks such as stone circles, cairns and clapper bridges.

Climb a tor to have your breath taken away again by the scenery below: this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a mix of woodland, reservoir, valley and cave habitats.

A few miles further afield, start off at the High Moorland Visitor Centre to find out everything you need to know about Dartmoor’s history, wildlife and culture, then go on a history tour to take in Buckfast Abbey and Devon’s castles or take a wildlife trip to the area’s farm attractions Pennywell Farm, Totnes Rare Breed Farm and the Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary.

If you’ve had one too many cream teas (it’s easily done) and prefer to take in the scenery while sitting down, steam along to the South Devon Railway for valley views from Buckfastleigh to Totnes.

There are baleloads of family attractions in the area for you all to flock to: let the kids walk on water at the award-winning River Dart Country Park, ape the baboons and gorillas at Paignton Zoo or goggle at the sharks at the UK’s biggest aquarium, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
