General

  • Modern stays in Dartmoor National Park
  • Just outside a moorland village and with woodland views
  • Dogs welcome

Had a baaaad week at work? Filled with shear determination to have a woolly good break overflowing with luxury and glamour? Flock to Dartmoor Shepherds Huts for a stay in Dartmoor National Park.

The huts here were added brandly new to the site in 2012 and are fully insulated with wool from the site’s own sheep, so remember to baaa thank you as you frolic past.

And, while they’re traditional in style, they're properly modern and up to date: timber-built, fully-equipped and sleeping up to four people (two in the double bed and another two on airbeds).

There are moor points here for the site’s location: pitches are in a peaceful Dartmoor valley with woodland views on one side and the Holy Brook on the other, just outside the moorland village of Holne and in an area packed with activities for all ages and tastes.

Naturally there are traditional Devonshire cream teas and the best of local produce around the area, but as it would be knit-picky to camp on Dartmoor and not cook over a traditional campfire too, all pitches have their own firepits and wood is available to buy from the friendly owners.

Dartmoor Shepherds Huts welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Please note

Large motorhomes not fit through the local narrow lanes. Please check road guides.

Comfortable camping in a shepherds hut. Beautiful location. 02/11/2017

I loved staying here. Think of it as camping with a few luxuries rather than staying in a house or caravan and you will be happy too.

The sound of the stream and owls at night is peaceful. On a clear night the dark sky means you can see so many stars. The fire pits really transform the experience and are a great idea. The horse is friendly.

You can walk for miles without needing the car and some of the most beautiful parts of the moor are within easy reach - there's no point in driving more than a couple of miles. Walk to Bench Tor, Venford Reservoir or drive to Sheep Tor, Bel Tor, Dartmeet and so on.

    Here are some practical tips:
Bring the yellow Dartmoor Ordnance Survey map. It shows all the footpaths and terrain better than Google does.
Bring a big cooking pot with a lid so you can make stews, fry without the fat spitting or cook on the fire. A small sharp knife for chopping veg or opening packets is a good idea too.
If you drink beer bring a pint glass.
Bring lots of tea lights, lanterns or candles.
    Bring a torch.
Bring fire lighters and a small amount of firewood. It is available but just to be sure you have some.
Bring a warm coat so you can sit outside for longer.
Buy fresh food every day as there's no fridge. Buckfastleigh and Ashburton have shops and there is plenty of food to choose from.
There are takeaway places in both towns and more pubs than you will ever need.
There's no need to bring extra bedding for the double bed, even if it's cold. There's a nice warm duvet and lots of pillows. You should bring any other bedding though.
If I was coming with kids, or more than 2 people, I would bring a little tent for them to sleep in.
A portable gas heater is a great idea if you think it's going to be cold.
Anything that needs plugging in won't work. My phone worked outside some of the time. (EE, iphone 6)
The toilet was clean. The shower was warm and free.
Trago Mills is a cheap source for anything you might have forgotten: camping gear, cooking gear, clothing, gas, books. Just google it.

We really loved the location..wonderfully tucked away above the village of Holne, where you HAVE to go and support the village shop and tearoom, it's gorgeous and Impressive it is able to run.

Everything is well signposted and labelled at the camp and the toilets and showers are good. The fire pits are also great and there is good parking and run around space for dogs. The bed was comfortable too.

It seems a very relaxed set up based on trust.

    Disliked:

We thought it might have been nicer to have met the owners, even if it was just a note in the cabin or a hello in passing. We just had a few questions like where would you like us to wash up as there is no sponge? And also i think in the hut we were allowed towels but we didn't know who/where to ask.

Nothing, we couldn't wait to leave.

    Disliked:

    Where do I start.

A very very basic hut with no lighting. The lighting should have been working by a car battery but the battery showed red and needed replacing or recharging. It states that it can sleep 4 but this is not the case. We had two children who had to sleep on air beds on the floor. This meant that once the children were on the floor there was no where for me and my partner to sit, if we needed to get up in the night for the toilet we couldn't get to the door.
There is no undercover seating area outside so if the weather is bad you are stuck in a tiny hut.
The utility room was in a very poor state. The fridge was dirty and smelly, the freezer was unusable and needed defrosting. There was no hot water at the sinks in the toilets.
The site was in a poor state with several abandoned tents. Lots of netting bags from logs also littered the site. The bins were overflowing and the place looked a general mess.
The owner did not introduce themselves all weekend and we left after spending just two nights there.

peace, tranquility, remoteness -as was looking for a quiet few evenings when out in the day.

    Disliked:

Sadly arrived in heavy rain (sadly, same for next 2 nights there) to stay in the Huck caravan, only to find the main light bulb not working and 2 holes in the ceiling.
One half of 2 seater sofa soaked as under the leak.
The ensuite was fine except no towels provided.
Woodburner would not light after repeated attempts, so no heat; looked like previous occupants could not light it either. Possibly blocked flue?
No one around in daytime when went looking.
Emailed Libby my concerns, no reply received after a week, disappointing.
Huck not so good in our great british rain!

It was really quiet and peaceful, so easy to get some good quality sleep. Lots of hot water in the showers. Clean showers and toilets. Good washing up/utility room.

    Disliked:

Push button showers. I know they're a water saving thing, but they really get on my nerves. Can't complain too much as there was lots of hot water and the showers were free. Think it's mostly a personal dislike. Also there was nothing to dry my hands with in the toilets. A hand dryer would be great.

Directions

Leave the A38 at either Ashburton or Buckfastleigh junctions (depending which way you're coming from), and follow the signs for Holne.

When you arrive at Holne, pass the pub on your right and continue up a hill. The road takes a sharp right. Follow the road until you reach a sign for Michelcombe and take a left turn there. Then when you reach a small bridge, follow the sign to the bridle path. The farm is at the end of that road on the left. Take the lower gravelled track.

Large motorhomes not fit through the local narrow lanes. Please check road guides.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food...dive into the middle of the Westcountry’s larder to sample loads of local produce in the area’s restaurants and pubs: the Church House Inn a mile away at Holne shouldn’t prove to be too strenuous a walk back to base once you’ve munched your way through the fresh fish, Dartmoor venison or ploughman platters on offer.

If you decide that you need to walk off the Devonshire delights, you won’t be far away from plenty of scenic sights: there are heather-covered hills, wild Dartmoor ponies and walking routes all nearby, along with ancient archaeological landmarks such as stone circles, cairns and clapper bridges.

Climb a tor to have your breath taken away again by the scenery below: this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a mix of woodland, reservoir, valley and cave habitats.

A few miles further afield, start off at the High Moorland Visitor Centre to find out everything you need to know about Dartmoor’s history, wildlife and culture, then go on a history tour to take in Buckfast Abbey and Devon’s castles or take a wildlife trip to the area’s farm attractions Pennywell Farm, Totnes Rare Breed Farm and the Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary.

If you’ve had one too many cream teas (it’s easily done) and prefer to take in the scenery while sitting down, steam along to the South Devon Railway for valley views from Buckfastleigh to Totnes.

There are baleloads of family attractions in the area for you all to flock to: let the kids walk on water at the award-winning River Dart Country Park, ape the baboons and gorillas at Paignton Zoo or goggle at the sharks at the UK’s biggest aquarium, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
