General

  • Peaceful dog-friendly site in Exmoor National Park with sea views
  • A 10-minute drive to Lynton and Lynmouth and 40 minutes to Woolacombe
  • Wild camping with barbecues and campfires allowed; toilets and showers

Bask in sea views alongside Exmoor ponies, horn sheep and a herd of Red Devon cattle, unwind beside the campfire, and re-imagine the valleys and coves of the day… this is the life on the family-run organic farm site of Brendon Barton Farm in Exmoor National Park’s Doone Valley.

Once you've settled down for some wild camping on this working farm, the biggest worry on hand will be deciding between burgers, steaks or sausages for the barbecue or ranking the local beers and spirits in the local pub. Adjacent to Brendon Common and its moorland or wooded valleys for walking, this site is well-situated for deeper trails into Exmoor National Park and the coastal grooves of Woolacombe, 40 minutes’ drive away.

Looking for a place for the whole family? Not to worry, families and dogs are welcome on site. If you like, speak to the farmer and arrange a pitstop tour to meet and greet the other animals on site.

It surely won't be long until your stomach is grumbling. Sit in and try the seaside tastes in Lynton and Lynmouth, 10 minutes’ drive away, or visit two pubs within a five-minute drive for relaxed river views. You can set up a barbecue right beside your tent or caravan and make use of the fresh meat for sale on site. Afterwards, purchase logs from the farm for a campfire after dark.

Toilets and hot showers are on site to help make life easy, and you can take care of any pots and pans in the washing-up area.

Loads of space so even on bank holiday not too close to anyone. Plenty of space to play catch games with children. Great views, excellent location (we even walked to the coast). Owners really friendly.

Rubbish was overflowing the bins and we were the only ones on the site inspite of the fact that pitchup had stated only a couple of pitches left on booking site!

Facilities; shower very temperamental, toilets ditto. Generator taken away before our holiday was due to end so couldn't shower or use toilet, we were the last to go left 2 days early as not prepared to say without functional toilet or shower, also farmer put his sheep in the field before we left after reassuring me he would wait till after we had gone, we have 3 dogs with a strong pray drive, not impressed.

    Everything!
-Easy to book especially as it was a group of 4 adults and many places only take families.
-Perfect location, easy to get into Lynton and Lynmouth.
-Nice and quiet, but we were able to have a campfire and play music too which was nice.
-Toilets were nice and showers did the job!
-What we loved the most were the owners and their dogs! They checked on us 1/2 times a day to make sure everything was okay and were very helpful. They also had great local knowledge which helped us decide where to go.

    Disliked:

    Nothing really!
We are used to camping with very limited facilities so it was good to have nice toilets and a shower. Having a generator to power the toilets isn't ideal at night but the campsite is still fairly new and the owners are great at taking feedback.

Great farm site with rural/moor views over 2 large fields, pitch where you like, lots of space for everybody. On the more wild camping side which is totally what we were after. Can be a bit tricky to find but we went via Hillsford Bridge, as another camper suggested on Pitchup, rather than the narrow moor roads and found it quite easily. Ground is good for pegging, no issue with stones etc. Jess and her dad Nigel are lovely, very welcoming and hospitable and check on everything & everyone regularly. Fire pits available which were great as it can get chilly in evenings in late summer etc as you are high up. We bought logs, kindling and some very delicious burgers from their own Ruby Red herd, from the family, you can also get sausages and steak when available too. Toilets are porta cabin type and were kept clean and stocked with loo roll and sanitiser. Showers are again porta type and can be a bit temperamental but not an issue for me really personally. Night skies are really fabulous from this site, on a good clear night you can see the Milky Way, and shooting stars galore. Loved the sights & sounds of the farm too - watching the sheep being rounded up on the hill, the geese, the owls hooting away etc…this is a perfect base for exploring some really magnificent countryside and coastal areas. We look forward to definitely returning again! It’s a gem of a campsite!

A lovely site to stay in for a few days …31/08/2021

A lovely site to stay in for a few days Wild camping. Plenty of space to spread out. We loved that we could bring our 3 dogs and were able to put up our gazebo and extra small tent up without any extra costs. It was quiet, dry and sheltered. Jess and her father were a fantastic hosts. They came around twice a day to introduce themselves, have a chat and were contactable by mobile phone if we needed anything. They offered a firepit and we could buy logs and kindling straight from them. This was a really nice touch and i would recommend as it kept the chill off in the evenings. You could also buy burgers and sausages direct from them as well.

Toilets and showers were adaquate and a bonus to a Wild camping site.
There is water on site but it needed boiling before drinking. This was not a problem for us but if you had young children you would need to bring bottles of drinking water. We would also recommend you take some toilet roll. The toilets ran out on occasions but again it was not a problem for us as we had brought some with us.

You will need to drive an hour to the nearest supermarket. We went to Minehead and combined it with a walk on the beach so it was not a problem. The roads around the area are VERY narrow and winding especially around Lynton and Lynmouth. It is not for the faint hearted but it is a lovely area and can be done,

We really had a lovely stay here and will def stay again next year. We wish Jess and her father a good rest of season and look forward to seeing them again next year.
