General

  • Watersports, high ropes adventure course, archery and climbing
  • A short drive from the historic market town of Launceston
  • Free hot showers, undercover BBQ area, play area and on-site café

A site for campers who like paddling their own canoe, kayak, boat, board or anything in between...

At a whopping 730 acres, Roadford Lake Campsite is the biggest lake for watersports in the southwest and has all manner of aquatic capers, including windsurfing, sailing, rowing, canoeing, surf skiing and water zorbing. There’s no shortage of action on land either, with a high ropes adventure course, archery and climbing.

The site has kit to hire out to have a go on the water, as well as qualified instructors whose time can be booked if you want a bit of tuition. Those who have their own kit can bring it along and hit the water for a small fee – please ask at reception for details (third party insurance on your own craft is essential, please). For land activities, ask at reception when you arrive as these require minimum numbers and need to be booked in advance.

The amount of space means you’ll always be able to find plenty of picnic spots, and the only people you’re likely to see acting fishy around here are guests enjoying the bank and boat angling (the lake is stocked with brown trout).

Visitors will definitely want to take their time over the spectacular lake views, as well as enjoying the pretty walking trails and cycle paths along the shores of the lake or, for the more adventurous, checking out the bike trails in the forest across the lake. In case of overexertion, head to the licensed café alongside the site’s visitor centre for a restorative cream tea, sandwich, snack and soft drink or something a little stronger.

Reach the café via the new footpath leading from the site, through a canopy of trees and around the sheltered inlets before opening onto the path across Roadford’s dam. The walk takes about 20 minutes and is suitable for bikes and some pushchairs. (Please be aware there's one rather steep, though short, hill and the final leg through the field is not paved, so sensible footwear to suit the weather is advised. If you'd rather drive, the journey is doable by car in a few minutes.) The play area for ages up to five is also on this side of the lake.

Roadford Lake Campsite is set right on the lakefront, and has modern showers, an undercover area for barbies, a play area and the usual washing-up, disposal and recycling facilities. There's also a separate field available for Scout groups. Dogs are welcome as long as they're kept on leads while on site.

To stock up on food and drink, local town Launceston with a 24-hour store and petrol station, is within easy reach. As the site is in a rural location, there are no pubs/restaurants within walking distance; however; several village pubs serving food are easily reachable by car.. They're generally popular places, so the Roadford Lake team recommends booking in advance: reception has details and contact numbers for when you want them.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Swimming and bathing in the lake is not permitted.

If you arrive after 4pm on your check in day, lake access is prohibited until the next day when you have checked in with reception.

Clean facilities, nice staff, beautiful views on the lake. 18/08/2017

Views and setting are fabulous. Staff helpful. Nice relaxed atmosphere. We were in a field with a couple of other tents. The next field was pretty full with young groups on adventure training holidays etc... all very well behaved and quiet to the point that you wouldn't have known that were there without looking.

    Disliked:

The ground does not drain too well so if there has been rain prior to your arrival expect puddles in the grass and don't forget your wellies. This shouldn't be too much of a surprise as you are on a lakeside.
Could do with an area for a play park and somewhere to kick a ball around.

Lovely quiet site with nice walks around the lake.
A freezer is provided for ice blocks, etc.
There is a covered communal BBQ area for anyone to use.
The electric touring pitches were quite spacious.

    Disliked:

The facilities are a little dated in one block, but better in the main block.
You have to drive to get to the restaurant/cafe. It is the other side of the lake and not onsite.
The site is used by groups of youngsters for watersports activities, which left the floors of the showers/WCs/changing rooms wet and treacherous to walk on, particularly for anyone who walks with a stick.

Do not mix families and groups. 03/08/2017

Our visit was to be a family holiday consisting of 3 family groups on 3 pitches, two tents and one motorhome.

The site has a great location by the side of a lovely reservoir.

    Disliked:

The booking / admin is quite shambolic but the staff are friendly and try to help. The pitches were nice but quickly very wet in the rain which frequents the area.
There were two lots of toilets/showers, one probably intended for the water activities. Both were communal showers and in the other campers block, although clean, the electic lights were never on making cubicles dark. Outside I found the paths muddy with puddles, particularly around the washing up sinks. I nearly slipped wearing crocs on many occasions.
We’d had some very wet days when a group of around 80 youngsters arrived and were sited right in front of us. The leaders tents pitched in an area we had been told were not pitches, right next to our family tents and our family had been playing cricket there. Although well behaved youngsters they would be too much in our face, akin to a being on a scout camp. Not good to mix family groups with youth groups. We all decided to leave half way through our holiday.
We were also not happy with the charge of £7 per day for launching our own kayaks etc. onto the reservoir.

From the manager...

Hello Mr Ellis,

Thanks for your feedback, we are sorry your stay here didn't meet all of your expectations. We understand your concerns regarding the NCS group camping in the same field as you, but as you pointed out during your stay here they were very well behaved other than one ball game.

We appreciate there were some technical issues regarding your booking before your arrival and we apologise for this, it was down to the fact we doing our best to meet your requests to be pitched together and had to move you away from out standard Pitch-Up pitches, this led to you being sent incorrect automated emails saying you had paid. Whilst this is not ideal our staff were honest and upfront with you and gave you half price camping and a free days launching for your four kayaks. We do offer reduced launching fees for campers that staff would have made you aware of had they been given the chance.

Once again, we are sorry you you didn't enjoy your stay with us.

Lovely and peaceful site with plenty of walking for our two dogs. However I think we went at the right time as we had the place nearly to ourselves. Can imagine it gets busy at certain times but the staff were friendly and the facilities were adequate. Also very quiet no traffic noise. Would go again.

    Disliked:

A bit pricey at £22 per night.

The site is beautiful, with lovely scenery and wildlife to view. Very peaceful, and relaxing. If you are the sporty type there is plenty to keep you busy, if not then it's a great place to just chill out and relax.
Staff were friendly and the amenities were clean.
The pitch was a great size. There is a covered area where you can cook or use the bbq. Nice wash up area for campers with a small freezer for your ice blocks and a microwave also a washing machine and tumble dryer.
For £16 a night with electric it was ideal.

    Disliked:

The only downside I would say is that the showers are more of a sports facility/communial type, it could do with some where there is a dry area so people who are not comfortable with displaying themselves could use.

    Lake and partial view

    Disliked:

We were not met on site by staff. When we found someone he just gave a brief wave towards the area our pitch was in. Only seemed to be the huge water sport changing room to use as toilet/shower, it was clean but the shower was boiling temp. Too hot to stand in and def not for children. No hooks inside and flooded into the main open shower area. Very daunting to use in the dead of night for a lone female too! The washing up area was filthy with dirty old forgotten towels left over the wooden area. This site cost us £20 without electric!! This was much more than some of the lovely farms we stayed on during our visit. No explanation of where the "café" was or what we could do for food. Very disappointing

Local attractions

Due to its handy proximity to the A30 and its setting on the Devon and Cornwall border, Roadford Lake Campsite is a nifty base for sightseeing, seaside days, city shopping and active days out. It’s easy to dart across to the moor from here too, to check out Canonteign Falls and the ponies of Dartmoor National Park.

Head north or south to explore the Devon and Cornish coasts: comely fishing villages, fab surfing beaches and large stretches of the 600-mile South West Coast Path are within easy reach. Tintagel Castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, would make a good place to start.

Under an hour’s drive is Exeter, Plymouth and Cornish beach towns Newquay and Bude.
