  • Peaceful family-friendly wildlife haven with meadows in Devon
  • A 15-minute drive to the beach; 20 minutes to Dartmoor National Park
  • Paddleboard hire and kayaking trips available on site
Head over a bridleway into meadows and flat, mown grassland… then, settle down at Allerbrook Meadows, a family-friendly site in Devon bordered by a stream, 15 minutes’ drive from the beach. Off-grid wild camping is on the cards here, so simply dump your equipment into the trailer (as cars can’t use the bridleway) and pick your preferred spot. Hire out a kayak or paddleboard from the site or take one of their kayaking trips to the river or sea… then chill out afterwards, as campfires are permitted and there’s a firepit with a tripod and grill provided (seasoned logs available at a small cost). Handily, there are also supermarkets, farm shops, cafés and restaurants within 10 minutes’ drive of the site to source some tasty treats or ingredients. Then, there's a cooking area to craft up your concoctions, plus picnic tables and water for washing up and cooking from the site’s borehole, which is a short walk away. The site also has a covered shower and facilities including a composting toilet, portable toilet and a small communal fridge with a freezer for ice packs. It’s not too tricky to map out a route, as there’s wifi and electric sockets to charge devices on site. And that's handy as there are lots of footpaths around including circuits directly from the site – keep your eyes peeled for buzzards, herons, swallows and deer or wildflowers and butterflies as you go. Stars, bats, owls and hedgehogs are on show at night – with quiet time after dark to ensure the animals aren't disturbed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Our best campsite ever! It was like wild camping but with extras included. (Picnic bench, BBQ, fire-pit, chairs). The fridge, freezer and the hot shower were very much appreciated. Chris gave us maps of some lovely walks which we did from, and back to, the site. We were always happy to return to our pitch and the sounds of nature, especially the hooting of the owls.

Disliked: Work commitments meant that we couldn’t extend our stay. ☹

From the manager: So glad you enjoyed your stay and the walks. There are more walk plans for you to try out should you decide to come again. It's good to see that the swing is not just for kids!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We have stayed at Allerbrook Meadow twice in the last 2 years and have enjoyed it very much on both occasions. It is a fantastic location for both Dartmoor and the coast with a super choice of beaches close by. The campsite is peaceful and relaxing and the setting is idyllic with a small stream running past the pitches surrounded by beautiful trees. Chris is a very helpful and kind host. A magical place to unwind - would highly recommend it!

From the manager: Thank you for that glowing review. We were very pleased that you were able to come again for another week of walking, swimming and exploration of rivers and coastline. And dam building too. Very impressive!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We stayed at Allerbrook Meadows last summer in the rain and loved it so much (despite the weather) that we returned this year. This time it was beautifully sunny for our entire stay which was a bonus. It is such a special site - beautifully peaceful with a little stream and a makeshift swing over it providing hours of entertainment for the kids. There is also access to a fridge, electricity sockets for charging phones etc, and a hot shower. Chris, the owner, is extremely accommodating and friendly. He offered a lot of very helpful advice and local knowledge about places to go and things to do. We ran out of time to fit everything in so hope to return again next year!

From the manager: Oh Jo! You say all the right things! We were very pleased that you and your family (the full complement this time) could come again, albeit for such a fleeting visit. And to bring another, very nice family too. We hope you’ll be able to camp here again and stay a bit longer as you have a quite a few things to tick off on that To-Do List! Love the photos, especially the starry night. It's like a nativity scene, just needing camels and kings.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is or second year back to Allerbrook Meadows with my family and this time we brought friends who loved it just as much as we did. It is a beautiful location with lots of wildlife -very much back to basics however there is still the option for hot showers, a charging point and freezers for ice packs - it really is the best of both worlds. Falling asleep to the sounds of the owls and the babbling brook is so peaceful and Chris and Pam, the owners are such genuinely lovely people who can't be more helpful and friendly.

Disliked: Nothing .... That we couldn't stay longer !

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We were cheered when, in the depths of winter, we saw your bookings come in and very happy to welcome you back this summer. And the friends you brought too - as a birthday present. Brilliant idea! The boys were like they hadn't been away - all happy and chatty from the moment they got out of the car. And full of important questions like, 'We're allowed to wee up against a bush, aern't we?' See you all again next year, we hope!

Little adventure, lots of space and peace for a few lucky families.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: If you are looking for an adventure, making a campfire on your pitch while the wine is cooling in the little brook running past your tent, and you're not afraid of driving a narrow lane, this is the place to be. Large pitch, even surface, always a little breeze and jolly companions who run the place. Just room enough for three pitches and no cars direct near the pitch. In the evening wildlife makes itself heard; we've seen bats and heard different species of owls and pheasant. The campsite gives access to a lot of possible activities: beachlife, seakayaking and watersports within 15 miles and also woods an moors within 20 miles. But having a big restday on the campsite itself, doing little and baking bread over the campfire in the evening is also fun. There are kayaks and a sub for hire; this makes going co hidden beaches even more entertaining.

Disliked: There is a lot of walking to do on this campsite, so people who are not accustomed to darkness and taking a little time to get to the shower or uphill to the parkinglot will have to adapt. Toilets are dry-compost in tents and the shower is set up in a little garden shed. This wil cost you a bit more time and work to get your morning or evening shower. There is no hot water available for dishwashing.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Comparing the ‘cleanliness’ rating with that of most other reviews, I suspect the issue was the newly-installed toilet and the basic facilities associated with it. Sorry :-( I’m on the case and the next campers on that pitch will benefit from a more civilised set-up and a hand-washing facility. It’s great that you enjoyed spending time on-site as well as exploring the coastline and Dartmoor rivers. We enjoyed having you camp here and were pleased to be able to give tips on holiday outings and activities.

From the manager: We are very pleased that you, our first visitors from the Netherlands, enjoyed your stay here and were able to see so much of the surrounding area and pack in so many different activities. Maybe this review will inspire more of your fellow countrymen to think about visiting The South Hams and pitching up in the meadow.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful site with lots of wildlife and walks nearby. Very peaceful except when the rooks are disturbed. Very friendly and helpful hosts who are very willing to share their local knowledge. Lots of extras like the community centre tent with games, firepit, washing up bowl. There are items to borrow in the shed if you forget anything like a corkscrew. The free car park in Aveton Gifford was great for kayaking. The fridge was very useful in the hot weather if a bit of a trek. No light pollution so the stars were fantastic.

Disliked: I wasn't aware when booking that the composting toilet was a hole in the ground (with toilet seat above) not the more usual ones with a separate tank for wee. This means you are given a portapotty for wee or can go wherever you like but we struggled to find anywhere private, especially when there were children playing in the stream. I didn't fancy having the potty in our small tent, especially in the hot weather. I forgot to mention while on site that ideally a toilet tent could be provided for each pitch or even just a windbreak to put around the potty. This wouldn't put us off going back though. We'd just need to put more thought into how to pitch our tent to give more privacy behind it.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you Elizabeth for the constructive comments. The third pitch does now have its own toilet, completed yesterday. It's a composting toilet for poo and a porta-potty for wee with tissue, all inside a tent. Following your suggestion, there's another tent on order, (unfortunately only one left in stock), so it's a trip to Go Outdoors for me this morning! By the weekend each one of the three pitches will have its own toilet tent. We do hope you'll visit again to enjoy some more walks, wildlife and stars.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Allerbrook Meadows is a wonderful camping site in Devon. This was our second stay here and we loved every second spent here. The site has everything what you can ask for. Nice shower with hot water, fridge, charging facilities, toilet and portaloos, firepits with logs, washing up area, pots, picnic tablewith benches and even free wifi. Chris and Pam are lovely hosts. They are always there and happy to help with any issue if needed. Our 4 years old boy loved to play in the little stream running next to our tent and also loved to watch animals around us. The location of the site is also perfect. There are lots of incredible places to visit within less than 1 hour drive. Such as Paignton, Darmouth or Hope Cove. There are couple of smaller shops in the village and there is also a superstore is in 15 mins drive. We would highly recommend this place to everyone (with or without kids) who loves nature as it is beautiful, quite and fully filled with the feeling of freedom. We can't wait to go back next year.

From the manager: Such a lovely review. Thank you Zita. It was so nice to see the three of you again and hear your appreciation of the rural environment, matched only by our appreciation of the taste of Hungary which you brought. The goulash was delicious and we are looking forward, when the hurlyburly's done, to using the herbs and spices in an authentic recipe. Thank you. We will see you next year!

Liked: The whole site was as described. Very quiet only one other tent at time of stay. The hosts Chris and Pam could not do enough to help our stay. They were brilliant. The fire pit and wood were a lovely touch. The shower was excellent and the compost tiolet was good. Its a great campsite and close to great beaches. The kids loved it and its definitely on our best list from now on.

From the manager: It was lovely to start the 2022 season with happy families with happy children. We are glad to have been of help with beach and restaurant recommendation and pleased that you managed to pack so much in to your stay. We're even more pleased that the Meadow is now on your 'Best List'. Thank you!

Liked: We can highly recommend Allerbrook Meadows as a wonderful site to stay on. If you’re after a quiet site with lots of space and surrounded by nature then this is the site for you. Chris and Pam are wonderful hosts who are easy to talk to and happy to advise if asked. We took advantage of the chance to hire a kayak and paddleboard, and had the best time. We look forward to future camping trips there.

From the manager: We do enjoy having families camping in the meadows. You certainly made the most of the nearby beaches and coastline during your stay and we're very pleased that you might visit us again.
