General

  • Award-winning park in a wooded valley
  • Easy access to the main attractions of north Devon
  • Coffee shop overlooking gardens and lake

If life’s little stresses are getting you down, flee and hide away in this award-winning park in a Devon wooded valley. From your doorstep at Hidden Valley all the highlights of north Devon are within easy reach, yet once you’re snuggled up in your sleeping bag, relaxing in the on-site restaurant or gazing dreamily over the countryside, it’ll be like the world outside doesn’t even exist. Which is, always, a win...

There’s no need to leave until you’re fully rejuvenated, with plenty of relaxing options including wandering along the stream running through the park, lolling about the lakeside area and taking a woodland walk to spot kingfishers and otters.

Take a tramp through the forest then come back for a full English breakfast or cream tea in the coffee shop overlooking the gardens and lake – there’s wifi access too so you can load up your iPod and studiously avoid catching up on work. Which is also a win.

Kids and dogs can hide away too, as there are two play parks for the youngsters and the park is dog-friendly. Other Hidden Valley amenities include luxury shower and toilet blocks with hairdryers and underfloor heating, full disabled facilities, a reception with tourist information, a licensed shop and a launderette.

Once it’s time to venture off site, a bus stop is just outside the entrance to the park.

Easy access- just locate your pitch number on a note ... 16/04/2018

  • Electric gravel touring pitch

  • Liked:

Easy access- just locate your pitch number on a note displayed in the window of reception and drive on in.
Water was available on each pitch saving walking and splashing!
Washing machine and driers are good. Approx £5 for a load.
Bath is a great touch, please note though there is an additional charge for the hot water.
Play park looks great but make sure you pack wellies in, the site itself isn't too boggy but there are definitely some muddy areas.
Excellent location, although it is close to the road so if you want quiet tranquility this is not the site for you. As a city liver it didn't bother me too much.

    Disliked:

Advertises as having underfloor heating but this is ONLY in the family shower room.
The front office and shop were never open when we were on site even when we checked in. There was a buzzer system available should you have any enquiries.

Warden who stayed in a specially designated pitch not far ... 08/04/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Olga I. Confirmed

  • Electric gravel touring pitch

  • Liked:

Warden who stayed in a specially designated pitch not far from our location was extremely friendly and very helpful. Fortunately he was in and was able to resolve our TV connection issue on a first evening of our arrival as you are reliant on a special lead due to the site's location and reception was closed just after five pm.

Pitch size was good and well kept.

There is only one bus 21 route 40 which stops outside the Hidden Valley. The best value for money was North Devon ticket for £4.40 pp which allowed you to use the bus during the whole day on route from Ilfracombe to Westward Ho!

    Disliked:

Dated showers and toilets facility were cleanish apart from a black with mould ceiling. Windows on top of the showers were always open which was not too inviting considering the cold weather. We thought it was a bit of a joke that there was a mop in front to the showers with a huge sign next to it advising customers to mop the floor after they used the facility.

We did not find customer services / reception staff inviting or very helpful. They were not there after five and on other occasions during the day. The loud noise of staff tree cutting for hours almost in-front of us on the warmest day of our trip when we tried to sit outside and read did not go down too well.

The most disappointing was the location. It was at least seven miles away from anywhere. We are fit walkers but were not able to explorer as much as we wanted to. Walk to Ilfracombe was at least seven miles and commenced with a very steep incline and lead through a narrow busyish road.

Baggy Point Croyde, Woolacombe and Mortenhoe are only accessible by car from Hidden Valley.

We did not find that the site's woodland walks lived to our expectations. It looked like a tractor just bulldozed its way through the forest.

Our first trip in our motorhome so we didn't know what to expect! We weren't disappointed - on arrival the receptionist was friendly & helpful! Our pitch was lovely, the site is surrounded by trees with a stream running through it! The food in the restaurant was superb - we had dinner there & breakfast! The toilets & showers were spotless - a nice touch having music playing in the background! The bus stop to Ilfracombe & Barnstaple was conveniently situated at the entrance to the site. The weather wasn't great but it didn't dampen our spirits! Even though the site is located just off a main road, we didn't hear any traffic noise! We will definitely be making a return visit!

Lovely, beautiful setting, gorgeous walks, great play area (even though we don't have kids) clean facilities. Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

I would opt for a different pitch next time as we were a bit close to the road and could hear lorries rumbling by. We also didn't realise you're not allowed to put awnings on the grass so would upgrade to a slightly bigger pitch next time. WIFI not included.

Easy access both onto the site and the individual pitches, each pitch are nicely kept with carefully consideration to their outward views and privacy, stream, woodlands, and lake where lovely even in the snow!

    Disliked:

We where surprised when we didn't meet any of the staff on arrival, we arrived at 5pm, any just had our names on the reception door with a pitch number. To be honest, this was fine for us as only staying the one night, although could have taken a while to find the right pitch in the dark! A little bit of detective work found us the toilets and showers which where nice and clean.

Generally though the site was great and would like to return in the summer when the restaurant shop etc are open.
Only one negative comment is that it would be sensible not to put dog owners next to Oak 7. they have 2 dogs who bark and an adjoining dog would obviously join in whatever time of day of night

Local attractions

Hidden Valley is just four miles from two of Devon’s best-known beaches, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe, five miles from the surfing mecca of Croyde Bay and six miles from a family day out at the beach of Saunton Sands.

The areas around all these are well worth a look, but the Victorian harbour town of Ilfracombe is a must for bucketloads of boat trips such as punts out to nearby Lundy Island, the seafront with the new Landmark Theatre, and St Nicholas Chapel on Lantern Hill, where a light has shone over the harbour for over 1000 years. Bring a torch and an attitude for a walk to the Ilfracombe Museum and Tunnels beach, reached by tunnels through the cliff.

Many family attractions close by for all weathers, including the Big Sheep, the Dinosaur Adventure Park and Exmoor Zoo, while the sprogs will probably also like spotting ponies in the Exmoor wilderness, getting creeped out in the dungeon labyrinths of Watermouth Castle or taking to the skies in the rides at the Milky Way Adventure Theme Park.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (14.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (7.1 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (10.6 miles)
