Nature conservation area

General

  • Semi-wild seven-acre farm site near the north Devon coast
  • A 10-minute drive to Holsworthy; Bude and beaches 20 minutes
  • A wildlife haven; families, students and single-sex groups welcome

Jacob's Creek is a seven-acre stretch of proper Devon countryside – here you'll see hay bales, hedgerows and farm views by the spadeful. This out of the way spot is well-suited to those looking for totally self-sufficient breaks in a quiet off-grid setting.

Families, students and single-sex groups are welcome here; the site staff also invite you to bring your pets along (as long as you clear up after them). There's access to compost loos and fresh running water on site, but no showers or chemical disposal. The grassy fields at Jacob's Creek are uninterrupted by paved roads, so a four wheel drive is strongly recommended if you're planning on driving cross-country through the farm.

However you get around site, there's much to admire here, including a peaceful nature conservation area and woodland stream. Being bang in the middle of Devon means that the stars shine particularly brightly in the clear skies above the farm at night.

Grub here can cooked up on a barbecue if you’ve brought one along; there's a lovely local shop in the village of Whitstone (five minutes' drive) that's splendid for stocking up. Logs and free-range eggs can be provided on site at an extra cost, and guests can also request meat packs from local farms. (That said, with everything else fully wild-style at Jacob's Creek, you'll be forgiven if you take a cheat day and head to Holsworthy for a meal out instead.)

This site certainly gets top marks for location – both coastal and forest spots are easily accessible here. For a smashing circular forest trek head to Cookworthy Forest – it's six miles in all, starting and ending at the Junction Inn near Halwill (20 minutes' drive). The sandy beaches in Bude (20 minutes), meanwhile, also have a lot to recommend themselves.
