Hedley Wood Caravan and Camping Park: Brier Meadow pitches

General

  • Relaxed and dog-friendly park 10 minutes' drive from Widemouth Bay
  • Dog exercise area, mile-long dog walk and kennel facilities
  • Peak season bar serving pub meals and Sunday carvery

It’s safe to say that Hedley Wood Caravan and Camping Park is one of the most animal-friendly sites around: it has facilities just for canine visitors, and is so dog friendly it was lauded with an award by the Kennel Club.

Message to Fido: there’s no extra charge for dogs here so bring your mates, as the exercise area, mile-long dog walk and shelves full of pooch produce in the shop will get tails wagging. Should your humans insist on boring sightseeing in places that haven’t yet grasped the concept of dog service, you can always ditch them for a day’s partying in the kennel facilities on site. You can even pretend to let them choose the pitch: sheltered, open terrain or sea views (they do like to think they’re in charge, after all…)

This is a well-equipped site: there are two modern toilet and shower blocks with free hot water, facilities for dishwashing, laundry and recharging of batteries and freezer packs, a shop for vittles and other camping essentials, and a play area with climbing frame and swing. (If you're having a lazy evening in, the team recommends Freesat TV on park as the TV signal in the area is intermittent; Freesat kits can be hired on arrival subject to availability.)

Foodwise, the Woodman bar serves up pub favourites during the peak season; kids' meals, desserts, milkshakes and hot drinks are also available, and there are carvery dinners on Sunday evenings during peak seasons, subject to numbers.

Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Hedley Wood is in a great location, with great views and access to woods for walking the dog. There is lots of space to pitch up and for the kids to run around. The showers are free and hot.

    Disliked:

The on site shop was often closed and the toilet facilities were only cleaned once in our 4 night stay. We hardly saw any staff on site. I assume this is due to covid and staffing issues? Having said that on the whole the facilities were clean. They have good free wifi at the bar. The wifi that is available at the pitch was not free and was too expensive to use.

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback . Our goal is to provide a consistently reliable product and exemplary level of customer service. We take customer service as the highest priority and strive to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience. Based on the events you described we did not meet this goal. Your comments regarding the toilet facilities being unclean will be used for coaching and training our employees. The toilet blocks are cleaned on a regular basis, and I apologise that when you went into the toilets they were not to your satisfaction, unfortunately we are unable to man these 24 hours a day and some people are not the cleanliest of people. I will investigate this matter and I will pass this onto the relevant teams, and we will use this as a training guide.

Kind Regards

Hedley Wood Team

Local attractions

Guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to brilliant beaches around: Bude (15 minutes' drive) has two of the best in Summerleaze, which has an open-air sea pool, and Crooklets, a popular spot for surfers.

Other good options nearby include Widemouth Bay, Crackington Haven (rockpooltastic) and the National Trust’s Sandymouth Bay with its own waterfall. Trebarwith Strand and Westward Ho! are little further afield at 30 and 45 minutes away.

Top ideas for day trips include the castles at Tintagel and Launceston, the pretty cobbled lanes and ancient harbour of Clovelly (cars are banned in the village, but there are plenty of donkeys), the Eden Project’s exotic architecture – and contents, Padstow Harbour (famously home to Rick Stein and his multiple tastebud-ticklers), the romantic fishing villages of Boscastle and Port Isaac, and Bodmin Jail, a historic civil and naval prison which is now a museum, and is famed for its ghost hunting opportunities.

There are three adventure parks for kids in the area: Trethorne Leisure Farm, which has lots of cuddly farm animals, indoor sliding, bouncing and climbing, and outdoor action including pedalos, crazy golf and electric cars; Atlantis Adventure Park (handily located within the the Atlantic Village shopping outlet…); and the Milky Way Adventure Park, which has rides and rollercoasters, assault courses, live shows and falconry displays.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (15.3 miles)
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (18.0 miles)
  • Rock Beach (26.0 miles)
