  • Relaxed and dog-friendly park 10 minutes' drive from Widemouth Bay
  • Dog exercise area and mile-long dog walk on site
  • Peak season bar serving pub meals and drinks
It’s safe to say that Hedley Wood Holiday Park is one of the most animal-friendly sites around: it has facilities just for canine visitors, and is so dog friendly it was lauded with an award by the Kennel Club. Message to Fido: dogs are very welcome here so bring your mates, as the exercise area, mile-long dog walk and shelves full of pooch produce in the shop will get tails wagging. You can even pretend to let them choose the pitch: sheltered, open terrain or sea views (they do like to think they’re in charge, after all…) This is a well-equipped site: there are two modern toilet and shower blocks with free hot water, facilities for dishwashing, laundry and a shop for vittles and other camping essentials, and a play area with climbing frame and swing. (If you're having a lazy evening in, the team recommends Freesat TV on park as the TV signal in the area is intermittent.) Foodwise, the Woodman bar serves up pub favourites during the peak season; kids' meals, desserts and hot drinks are also available.

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked: The site was clean, modern and fresh site. Staff were really friendly. Great for star gazing and a 5-10 min drive to Bude Town centre. Bude beach is lovely and allows dogs.

Disliked: A great big static caravan parked up for storing in front of our camping pod, which completely blocked what would've been a beautiful view. A lot of the very small menu in the clubhouse was unavailable, when our food arrived it was missing sides which we were then told were unavailable. We weren't offered an alternative or any money off. We were then also overcharged by nearly £10 for our meal. We didn't go back to the clubhouse again, which was a shame because it looked great. No shelter or hot water for washing up with. It always seems we suffer at these places for going outside of the busy season, its like we're not as important as the busy season guests!

Electric grass and gravel pitch

Liked: The new leisure complex was relaxing and swimming pool looked amazing The toilet block on the camping field was well looked after and the showers were lovely and warm

Disliked: The camping field was too boogy not the owners fault but needs extra drainage Left a day early due to our pegs not staying in the waterlogged ground and the text collapsing in the middle of the night

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Plenty of space wity freedom to choose pitch. Nice bar. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Touring field was very muddy (difficult to avoid after recent weather sadly) which resulted in muddy/dirty toilet/shower blocks. Could maybe improve with more frequent cleaning of those areas. Also, toilet roll needed replenishing which would have been addressed if cleaning loos.

Camping pod

Liked: Pod, swimming pool, new leisure build and shop, lovely friendly staff, extremely helpful.

Disliked: The facilities and cleanliness of the toilets, showers and washing up area we’re a 1. No wifi signal in camp area. Dirty pod upon arrival, bedding was changed but floor was dirty still and floor under beds had to be swept by myself from huge dust piles, raisin boxes and just wiped all down. Very uncomfy bed and bedding was loose never fitted fully. 2 wooden blocks on the floor we think from double bed. Door was fixed immediately as well as smoke alarm sorted.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: On site restaurant/bar looked amazing. Good entertainment on site. Well priced. Clean facilities.

Disliked: Grass was quite long at the motor home/tent pitches. Check in time too late and check out time too early. Check in starts at 4pm which is later than standard.

Local attractions

Guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to brilliant beaches around: Bude (15 minutes' drive) has two of the best in Summerleaze, which has an open-air sea pool, and Crooklets, a popular spot for surfers. Other good options nearby include Widemouth Bay, Crackington Haven (rockpooltastic) and the National Trust’s Sandymouth Bay with its own waterfall. Trebarwith Strand and Westward Ho! are little further afield at 30 and 45 minutes away. Top ideas for day trips include the castles at Tintagel and Launceston, the pretty cobbled lanes and ancient harbour of Clovelly (cars are banned in the village, but there are plenty of donkeys), the Eden Project’s exotic architecture – and contents, Padstow Harbour (famously home to Rick Stein and his multiple tastebud-ticklers), the romantic fishing villages of Boscastle and Port Isaac, and Bodmin Jail, a historic civil and naval prison which is now a museum, and is famed for its ghost hunting opportunities. There are three adventure parks for kids in the area: Trethorne Leisure Farm, which has lots of cuddly farm animals, indoor sliding, bouncing and climbing, and outdoor action including pedalos, crazy golf and electric cars; Atlantis Adventure Park (handily located within the the Atlantic Village shopping outlet…); and the Milky Way Adventure Park, which has rides and rollercoasters, assault courses, live shows and falconry displays.
