How otterly, otterly lovely is this north Devon park in the grounds of a seventeenth century manor house, part open and part woodland, in its own cloistered valley and with direct access to the walking and pedalling meanders of the Tarka Trail?
A stay at rural and family-run Smytham Manor might see you in a tent, tourer, motorhome or camping pod rather than tucked up in a four-poster bed deep within an ancient manorial home, but you’ll have 23 acres of wildlife woodland and ponds to wander around instead, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An outdoor solar-heated pool with sun terrace is on site to wallow regally in/bask royally upon, along with a putting green to potter on and a bar with verandah from which to watch the Devon sun sinking down of an evening…
This is a site to roam around, with loads of room for running about and games playing (if you’ve been remiss enough when packing to omit a football/cricket kit for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted). A small play area is on site for the youngsters, next to the indoor games room with air hockey and foosball tables, table tennis and pool (another pool table, for the big folk only, is available in the bar).
When pitching up at Smytham Manor, pick a tent pitch in the old and sheltered walled garden close to the swimming pool, or roll your wheels onto the terraced area with hardstandings suitable for tourers, campervans and motorhomes. All pitches are level with electric hook-up and have access to the heated amenities block with free hot water, baby changing area, easy-access facilities, a small shop, freezer for ice blocks, dishwashing area and a launderette with coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers alongside ironing facilities. Dogs are welcome on site on all pitches apart from the camping pods.
Round and about, Smytham Manor is a mere mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from one’s manorial base.
Under 15s must be supervised by an adult in the pool area. This is a quiet family campsite.
Please note we are a dog-friendly site, but no dogs are allowed in the camping pods.
