General

  • Rural family-run campsite over 23 acres
  • In the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve
  • Pool, sun terrace, putting green and bar with verandah

The site is located in north Devon in the grounds of a seventeenth century manor house. Part open and part woodland, it is in its own cloistered valley and with direct access to the walking and pedalling meanders of the Tarka Trail.

Smythan Manor is a rural and family-run campsite over 23 acres with a lot of wildlife and ponds to wander around, all part of the North Devon World Biosphere Reserve in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

An outdoor solar-heated pool with sun terrace is on site to swim or bask in the sun upon. There's also a putting green and a bar with a verandah from which to watch the Devon sun set.

There's plenty of room for running about and play games (if you’ve forgotten a football/cricket kit at home for evening games, ask at the site reception and they’ll see you sorted). A small play area is on site for children, next to the indoor games room with air hockey and foosball tables, table tennis and pool (another pool table, for the adults only, is available in the bar).

Guests have access to the heated amenities block with free hot water, baby changing area, easy-access facilities, a small shop, freezer for ice blocks, dishwashing area and a launderette with coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers alongside ironing facilities. Dogs are welcome on site on all pitches apart from the camping pods.

Smytham Manor is just a mile from the gardens at RHS Rosemoor and an accessible drive from the wilds of both Dartmoor and Exmoor. A day at the north Devon coast, including the beaches of Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay, is around nine to 15 miles from the site.

With exception of the weather - high winds, we had a brilliant stay. The site was easy to find and manoeuvre the caravan (not cramped), is exceptionally clean and tidy, including the toilet areas and the pitches were level. We took our young pup and was glad of the dog walking area and in particular bins to put the pick up bags in.

I'm sure we will book again next year.

Swimming pool closed looked like not been used in a while . This wasn’t mentioned on the pitch.com . Had to go into Torrington for nearest food .

Excellent site, owners are friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Toilet facilities were warm and clean. The pool was not open because of the weather but I can see this being a real draw in the summer months. The site is perfectly located for visits to Clovelly, Bideford and surrounding towns/villages and the Tarka Trail is a beautiful way of seeing the Devon countryside either by bike or walking and is easily accessible from the site. We didn't use the WIFI or the games rooms but overall I would highly recommend this lovely site set in a beautiful location.

We liked the tent pitches which were in a walled garden which offered some seclusion in close proximity to the shower block. Level pitches had been made with little terraces in places which was good. We went in September which was quiet although there is an outside swimming pool in the corner of the garden so it might not be so quiet when this is busy. Toilets and showers very clean and couldn't fault. Very helpful staff who were knowledgeable about the area giving advise about local walks and directions to places to visit. This is an attractive well kept site surrounded by trees and fields and we would definitely consider going again.

    Disliked:

No shops, pubs or eating places within easy walking distance although we knew that before we went. There is a bar on site but we didn't go so cannot review.

The site was perfect and we shall definitely be back. We were very sad to leave at the end of our four night stay. The children love the swimming pool and the large space to cycle and play. The games room offered a good range of entertainment. We loved the Tarka Trail, that is accessed from the campsite, so much that we went back a second time and had a picnic on the river. We took our two dogs with and they also loved it.

Local attractions

The 180 miles of the Tarka Trail is accessible from Smytham Manor. You can follow the route of Tarka the otter from the Henry Williamson book.

Hire a bike in nearby Great Torrington for the easy 11-mile pedal along the banks of the River Torridge to Bideford; if walking, head out straight from the site or catch a bus from Great Torrington to explore the four-mile trail from Weare Giffard.

More walks, bike rides, climbing, fishing and all sorts of outdoor activities are easily accessible around Smytham Manor. You can learn to surf at north Devon beaches, enjoy cantering or mountain biking around Dartmoor and Exmoor. Wildlife is rife in these parts: the North Devon Biosphere was one of the first six UNESCO biosphere sites designated in the UK and covers an area from the heights of Dartmoor and Exmoor down via the sea to Lundy Island.

Nature of a different sort can be seen at Bideford’s famed and decidedly individual The Big Sheep, voted Devon’s best large attraction for 2013—14 and one of dozens of days out in Devon suitable for the kids: take the family along also to the Milky Way Adventure Park, also in Bideford or to the clay shooting and zorb balling of Barnstaple’s Southdown Adventure Park.

Plant lovers should visit the 65 acres of RHS Rosemoor a mile from the manor and Hartland Abbey and Gardens at Bideford, a twelfth century abbey with restored woodland gardens.

Also at Bideford, the mix of formal gardens, kitchen gardens and woodland at Tapeley Park and Gardens make for a restful afternoon out; don't miss a trip to Cheristow Lavender Farm and Gnome World, home to 250 species of wild flowers/plants and over a thousand gnomes.
