Nix the Nintendo, axe the X-box and write off the Wii – the sheer number of activities at the all-action Devon Cliffs Holiday Centre should shift even the most goggle-eyed of gamers. There’s abseiling on the climbing wall, floundering on the flumes at the indoor pool or slithering down the waterslide at the outdoor pool complex for starters…or more water activities including pool kayaking and AquaJets, sports such as archery, paintballing and fencing, or the packed programme of daily entertainment for all ages and tastes. You can even book a family wake ‘n’ shake session to get everyone out of their berths – but then again you might prefer a lie-in followed by a pampering session at the luxury spa, so you can save your energy for a shuffle at the ShowBar later… For food, take a terrace seat at the new South Beach Café for views of the Jurassic Coast and dishing up of fresh Devon produce; there’s also the Mash and Barrel bar and restaurant, Burger King, a fish and chip shop, a Starbucks and a pizzeria. If you’d prefer to dish up your own dinner, the park also has a convenience store and off-licence – and there’s a shopping arcade and gift shop to stock up on souvenirs. Devon Cliffs is set on hills overlooking a sandy bay and is a speedy scramble down the red cliffs to a gorgeous beach for fishing, surfing or sedate sandcastle building; the park is also adjacent to the World of Country Life with museum sections, play areas and a petting farm. This is a Haven site so smart accommodation comes as standard: the modern caravans here are available in a range of tariffs, with some adapted for wheelchair and guide dog users.

Local attractions

This stretch of Devon is stuffed with sights and activities to suit all sorts: sandy beaches, gorgeous gardens, vineyards, watersports, historical attractions and plenty for the kids – as well as World of Country Life next to the park, the littlies can also go wild at Crealy Adventure Park or the award-winning Paradise Park, both within a short drive. The botanic gardens of Bicton Park are six miles away from Devon Cliffs and have the only 18" gauge railway in Britain; trainspotters can also see the miniature trains at Exmouth Model Railway or puff along on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway from Paignton to Churston. The clean and sandy stretch of Exmouth Beach is a short stroll from Devon Cliffs and is known as a watersports haven; if staying dry is more your thing there are cruises from here to spot nesting guillemots and razorbills, fossil-hunting along the coastal and cycle paths or exploring nearby towns and villages including Torbay, Paignton and Lympstone. The Exe Estuary and the Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve are within easy reach for nature spotters and there’s also the award-winning Pennywell Farm nearby for getting up close and personal. Historical sorts are spoilt for choice with the National Trust and ancient attractions in Devon and neighbouring Cornwall: follow the Blue Plaque Heritage Trail from the National Trust’s 16-sided house A La Ronde in Exmouth; explore Buckfast Abbey, Castle Drogo and the prehistoric walks of Dartmoor, or get subterranean at Merlin’s Cave at Cornwall’s Tintagel Castle. Also in Cornwall are the must-see Eden Project and the Flambards Theme Park, with historical exhibitions including a Victorian village and Britain in The Blitz, alongside antics for the kids including a Funland and a Big Ride Zone. Round off a Cornish day out with a trip and a pic at Lands End, the most south-westerly point of mainland Britain.
