Camping in Exmouth? Bring bike, and binoculars. The 30-mile Exe Estuary Cycle Trail from Exmouth to Dawlish Warren is one of the most splendidly scenic bike rides in the south-west (seriously saying something) and should be stopped off every half mile or so to spy its thousands of wildfowl and wading birds (or take the Avocet Line/winter avocet cruise with the RSPB to bird spot in style). More into the beach? An Exmouth campsite is a clever base to bed down at and plan trips around the south Devon coast: Exmouth beach runs for two miles west of Exmouth’s harbour, Sandy Bay is a mile away, and Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth are within five to ten miles.

Also, fossils. And walks. Exmouth is at the western end of the Jurassic Coast and the starting point of the East Devon Way to Lyme Regis 38 miles away in Dorset: the East Devon Way and the South West Coast Path both carve up walks to fossil town Lyme via Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Beer and colossally good sights along the way.
