General

  • In the grounds of a village pub serving good meals in Thorverton
  • 20 minutes' drive from Exeter and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Access to toilet and shower facilities within the pub

If your holiday wish list features ‘pub within walking distance’, what better way to ensure that request become reality than by staying in the grounds of the pub itself? Plonk yourself on a pitch at the Ruffwell Inn and you’ll be but a short stumble from pints and plates of grub, served up in the main restaurant, out on the patio or on the comfy sofas by the fire.

It’s not just the eats and drinks that are conveniently located here – there’s also a mighty handy bus stop right outside, from where you can be whisked easily into Exeter or Tiverton without any of the hassle of parking. If you prefer to use your own muscle power, there are numerous walking routes in the local area, a couple of golf courses about 20 minutes away and canoes to be paddled along the river from Exeter.

If you’ve brought the nippers along, you’ll no doubt be chuffed to note the presence of a play area in the garden to keep them amused. Other amenities on site include outdoor water and electrical supplies and decent indoor toilet and shower facilities that are open from breakfast through to kicking-out time.

Awesome week so good we stayed another day. 8 nights fantastic weather, great hosting, wonderful food, especially the carvery, the dogs were lovely. our EHU lead was not long enough but peter came to our rescue with one that was. there's two vans that have been there over a month each that says a lot. its a great base to work out of for the coast, Exmouth and Dawlish both 45 mins, Exeter great shopping 20 mins, bus stop right outside the pup. We will be back again

The area was ideal for Exeter, Tiverton & beautiful villages nearby. Secluded site & peaceful. For £5per night, was a bargain! I now believe that the per night fee has increased to £10 +£2per day electricity.

    Disliked:

We chose the site for dog friendly aspect. However......... The owner has 2 German shepherd dogs which he let loose 3/4times a day without warning. The first few times was quite scary, although fairly well trained, they came into our awning. Our dog being young, I felt I had to get her out of the way of their sometimes ruff play. The facilities, being the shower & toilets are OK, but as a woman I was sharing with work men.....so not the cleanest.

From the manager...

This review is disappointing .

Pricing ..
Our rates were ridiculously cheap .. many similar sites charge £16.00 or more per night .
Dogs ..
My two Gorman shepherds are my pets .. they are very well trained and well behaved .. they simply want to welcome any doggy visitors and invite them to play . If this visitor wanted to be warned of other dogs they should have said .. They say they came because we are dog friendly .
Toilets / shower .
The toilets are of course exclusive Gents or Ladies .
Our Shower is in the disabled toilet and of course is locked wen in use for either Gents or Ladies .. I would be surprised if this lady has separate bathrooms for men and women at her house ..
Cleanliness .
The facilities are checked many times every day .. there is a mop and bucket in the shower room in case a visitor may splash a few drips getting out .

Check your electric supply, i had no earth !.reported said he would check

From the manager...

The electricity supply was checked and no fault found .. we now have a permanent fault detector in case there should ever be an earth fault .

This sort of fault is usually in the customers plug / socket or cable ..

Local attractions

If you’d like to work up an appetite for that pie and/or pint, there are lots of lovely circular walks in the area, including a couple starting from Thorverton itself and others from the nearby villages of Silverton and Bickleigh. Crediton, 20 minutes away, has a couple of courses for the golfers and Exeter is the launch point for canoe trips on the River Exe.

Canoe or not, it’s worth spending a day in Exeter, visiting the cathedral and poking about in the kid-friendly Royal Albert Memorial Museum (home to, among other things, a life-sized stuffed giraffe by the name of Gerald). If you’re a fan of historic houses, consider also paying a visit to National Trust-owned Killerton estate, 10 minutes away, or Powderham Castle, still in use as a family home.

Should the tiddlers (or the grownups for that matter) be demanding a beach day, it’ll take you 45 minutes or so to drive down to the coast and the beaches around Dawlish and Exmouth. Other kid-friendly days out within half an hour or so include Go Ape! and Crealy Adventure Park.

Must see

  • The National Trust Killerton House & Gardens (2.0 miles)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (5.8 miles)
  • Crealy Great Adventure Park (7.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Killerton (2.2 miles)
  • Killerton: Budlake Old Post Office (2.5 miles)
