General

  • In the grounds of a village pub serving good meals in Thorverton
  • A 20-minute drive from Exeter and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Access to toilet and shower facilities within the pub

If your holiday wish list features ‘pub within walking distance’, what better way to ensure that request become reality than by staying in the grounds of the pub itself? Plonk yourself on a pitch at the Ruffwell Inn and you’ll be but a short stumble from pints and plates of grub, served up in the main restaurant, out on the patio or on the comfy sofas by the fire.

It’s not just the eats and drinks that are conveniently located here – there’s also a mighty handy bus stop right outside, from where you can be whisked easily into Exeter or Tiverton without any of the hassle of parking. If you prefer to use your own muscle power, there are numerous walking routes in the local area, a couple of golf courses about 20 minutes away and canoes to be paddled along the river from Exeter.

If you’ve brought the nippers along, you’ll no doubt be chuffed to note the presence of a play area in the garden to keep them amused. Other amenities on site include outdoor water and electrical supplies and decent indoor toilet and shower facilities that are open from breakfast through to kicking-out time.

    Nice pub.

    Disliked:

We booked two nights through Pitch Up.
As it was cold, we used the electric hook up to keep us warm in the motorhome. Unfortunately, this caused the power supply to trip out in the pub. The owner came over to explain that our heater was causing the power cut, and asked us not to use the heater.
So we had a very cold night, and then moved to another campsite the next day.
As we had paid for two nights camping, we requested a refund of £14 for one night and £2 for the lack of electricity. A total of £16. The owner agreed to this.

However, we were only refunded £13.80, as the owner claimed that Pitch-Up owed us the £2.20. It may be a trivial amount, but we felt that we should have been refunded the full £16.

Easy to find, convenient. Seem to allow arrivals at any time, although they didn't have my booking when we got there so just as well we turned up just before the bar shut. They seem pretty friendly.

    Disliked:

It's a bit basic for the price. There was some dog mess around, behind the bins.

Excellent site with very clean facilities, friendly staff. 22/08/2018

The facilities and shower are lovely open 24/7 The food is great especially the carvery which I had most days, my wife had the dish of the day which was a medium curry which she enjoyed nearly everyday.
The grounds are tidy and short grass makes for cleaning up after your dog easy, consequently The site is as clean as any dog free site we have visited.
The landlord and his staff are lovely always on hand if you need anything. Nothing is too much trouble. We are hoping to stay again in September.
The site is dog friendly, so expect other dogs.
The landlord has two Alsation dogs which are loving and very friendly once they recognise your a guest. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay, and finally this is a family eating pub and not a drinking pub so there is not the usual bawdeness associated with pub sites. So the ambiance of the site goes quiet around ten pm except the odd heavy goods traffic we enjoyed good sleep.
We will be regulars here now we have found this site.

    Disliked:

Occasional thoughtless patron parked with headlights on and large engine running pointing straight onto our bedroom within the tent, whilst engaged in conversation. But we did pitch on the parking area side of the grass because we needed a electric hook up. A short fence would obviate this prob.

Small, quiet campsite. Other campsite users were very friendly.

    Disliked:

As a wheelchair user I was disappointed in the disabled toilet. It was quite small I had to reverse my chair in so I could push open the door to get out as it was extremely heavy. There are grab rails at the toilet which i did appreciate. However, the disabled toilet has a shower in which is for everyone on the campsite to use. This means that if people are showering I was unable to use the toilet for a period of time. The shower was also completely inaccessible. I can walk a small amount but I wouldn’t have been able to get up the step into the shower & there was no shower stall. On our last evening the flush on the disabled toilet was completely broken so I was unable to use it.

The toilets are situated just inside the pubs main outside doors therefore is also the toilets for the pub itself.

As a quick stop I can make do at the Ruffwell Inn campsite however, it means I am unable to shower and it makes using the toilet quite complicated.

It’s is also poorly signed in terms of finding the pub/campsite.

Local attractions

If you’d like to work up an appetite for that pie and/or pint, there are lots of circular walks in the area including a couple starting from Thorverton and others from the nearby villages of Silverton and Bickleigh. Crediton, 20 minutes away, has a couple of courses for golfers and Exeter is the launch point for canoe trips on the River Exe.

Canoe or not, it’s worth spending a day in Exeter, visiting the cathedral and poking about in the kid-friendly Royal Albert Memorial Museum (home to, among other things, a life-sized stuffed giraffe by the name of Gerald). If you’re a fan of historic houses, consider also paying a visit to National Trust-owned Killerton estate, 10 minutes away, or Powderham Castle, still in use as a family home.

Should the tiddlers (or the grownups for that matter) be demanding a beach day, it’ll take you 45 minutes or so to drive down to the coast and the beaches around Dawlish and Exmouth. Other kid-friendly days out within half an hour or so include Go Ape and Crealy Adventure Park.

Must see

  • The National Trust Killerton House & Gardens (2.0 miles)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (5.8 miles)
  • Crealy Great Adventure Park (7.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Killerton (2.2 miles)
  • Killerton: Budlake Old Post Office (2.5 miles)
