Haldon Forest Holiday Park: View of the site

General

  • Valley site among mature trees and landscaped ponds
  • A mile from Haldon Forest Park
  • Playground, shop and modern toilet and shower blocks

Pitching up in the River Kenn valley, on a park surrounded by Devon woodland and countryside, with mature trees and landscaped ponds complete with resident ducks… does this sound like it might fit the bill? If so, take your flock to Haldon Forest Holiday Park, five miles from Exeter and just a mile from the woodland and bike trails of the 3500-acre Haldon Forest Park.

Haldon Forest has a playground on the park for kids to go out on a limb under the watchful eye of more mature types; like most of the facilities here, the playground was installed back in 2010.

The site also has up to date laundry facilities, a shop and three modern toilet and shower blocks with heating and free hot water. All in all, you’ll surely find this park all that it’s quacked up to be…

Group bookings of 5 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Fantastic site. The site is separated into different areas, Adults only area then a the family section which was close to the play park. Tent pitches are large and spacious. The play park for children was lovely lots to keep the children occupied. The toilet blocks were always clean and tidy. Nice little shop on site selling all the essentials, that you may need. This is a proper campsite not a holiday park which is great for the more traditional campers looking for nice quite evenings sat around camp fires (which are allowed providing they are off the ground).

    Disliked:

The toilet block didn't have private cubicles with wash basins. We only used 1 of the toilet blocks on the site so there may have been some in the other block.

We were in the first field which was very peaceful and quiet (except for the ducks) and we were able to choose our pitch, and this seemed quite an informal site which was nice. It is a surprisingly big site, and not sure what it would be like if it was fuller. We were allowed a fire pit which was great for the evenings. We were able to cycle to Haldon Forest (although a very steep long hill) and cycle to a local pub. There was a small shop on site, which although we didn’t use could be useful for essentials (except alcohol which they did not sell yet). We were not rushed to leave either. If you want to explore the area by car, this is a central site.

    Disliked:

Whilst the actual toilets were plentiful and clean, the showers and floors could have been kept cleaner - especially with COVID etc. We have stayed on a site which was a similar price, and busy and was kept spotless. There were hand sanitiser holders outside the toilets, but no hand sanitiser which was surprising giving the situation we are in. There was no recycling and nowhere to put your grey waste, except down the drain. With a little bit of effort, this could be a great site - just a bit more tidying and cleaning etc.

Well looked after. Good facilities and play area. Easy reach of the beach. Despite being marked out the pitches were larger.

    Disliked:

Two fields are devoted to seasonal caravans. These look a little ugly. But the camping field is away from this. And the benefit is the facilities are good.

Good pitch sizes. Loved the wooden dividers between each pitch in the family field. Adults only field is lovely and peaceful. Lots of space for children to play safely in the family field. Showers and toilets close to most pitches and are regularly cleaned. Lovely little shop on the site which sales everything you could possibly need. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Local attractions

Bring the bikes to Devon or hire wheels at Haldon Forest Park to take full advantage of the miles of woodland mountain bike and cycle trails for various levels of ability.

Discovery trails, play equipment and several walking trails are also in the forest park including the circular Butterfly Trail and the easy-rated Mamhead Sensory Trail with gorgeous views along the Jurassic Coast and over the Exe estuary. A ten mile horse riding trail is also around for more relaxed forest sightseeing, with horse riding of a different type at the forest’s Exeter Racecourse.

Dartmoor National Park, with more hacking, hiking and biking as well as tor climbing, guided walks and geocaching, is a short drive from the holiday park. It has regular events throughout the year, towns and villages to take in, the famous Dartmoor ponies to spot and Dartmoor Zoo with meerkats, monkeys, lions and more.

Bring binoculars along with the bikes: the forest park and surrounding area are wildlife havens, with rare birds of prey and wild deer in the forest itself and birdwatching a few miles away at the Site of Special Scientific Interest the Exe Estuary: watch oystercatchers showing excellent culinary taste in breaking open mussels at Bull Hill or take a trip to the nature reserve at Dawlish Warren at the estuary’s mouth. If you’re bringing along the bikes, the National Cycle Network Exe Estuary Trail runs to Exmouth from Dawlish.

The sublime sand of Dawlish Warren is one of several South Devon sandy stretches, with the beaches at Teignmouth, Exmouth and Torbay within easy distance of Haldon Forest and the coastal towns of Torquay and Paignton a little further along the coast. Exmouth is the place to don the wetsuit as it’s known for watery sports of all types including diving, windsurfing and sailing; it’s also a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Finally, a stay at Haldon Forest has to include a day or two in Exeter to see its twelfth century cathedral, medieval Guildhall and famous historic quayside with antique shops, restaurants, canoe and boat trips and events such as dragon boat racing and guided tours.
