General

  • Valley site among mature trees and landscaped ponds
  • A mile from Haldon Forest Park
  • Two playgrounds and café bar with sun terrace

Pitching up in the River Kenn valley, on a park surrounded by Devon woodland and countryside, with mature trees and landscaped ponds complete with resident ducks…does this sound like it might fit the bill? If so, take your flock to Haldon Forest Holiday Park, five miles from Exeter and just a mile from the woodland and bike trails of the 3500-acre Haldon Forest Park.

Haldon Forest has two playgrounds on the park for kids to go out on a limb under the watchful eye of more mature types; like most of the facilities here, the playgrounds were recently developed and have been installed since 2010.

The site also has a café bar with sun terrace for tipples and snacks; up to date laundry facilities, and three modern toilet and shower blocks with heating and free hot water. All in all, you’ll surely find this park all that it’s quacked up to be…

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The café/bar will only be open on a limited number of days during the year to occupy demand. Opening times will be at the site manager's discretion.

This site is peaceful and family orientated, groups of three or more young adults under the age of 25 are not permitted.

Good Play park with football area. Good little bar that had a BBQ on Saturday evening. Good facilities. Quiet area. Lovely camp site.

Could do with a little shop just for essential items. Would be good if bar was open more often than Friday and Saturday night.

Great site. Dave was excellent. Very friendly. Kids enjoyed the playground. Showers and toilets kept clean and warm

    Disliked:

Gravel path beside at night..fill in holes under swings with bark as it gets very muddy when it rains. Use the bar as a little tuck shop for basics like bread and milk as no shop onsite.

We had a lovely welcome on arrival, the lady in reception was friendly and happy to see us. Throughout our stay her husband was incredibly pleasant, smiley and always appeared happy to see us - from when he was driving by with new visitors to emptying the bins.
The pitches were divided by low level wooden fences which really made you feel you had your own space, and you had plenty of room to park, play and relax - we had sufficient space for a large 6 man tent, a van and we even put up a badminton net for the week in front of the tent and had plenty of room left. The atmosphere was relaxed and felt safe, and it was a good idea to have separate areas for those of us with children and those without (It certainly made you relax knowing you weren't to worry if the children were running around disturbing the peace.) The park was good and entertained our children, and the little bar with it's 'Disco Inferno' flashing lightbulb disco was cute- it would be nice if it were open mid week for the mid week visitors too. We felt very comfortable, and the loation of the site is just close enough to Exeter to be able to get provisions, but far enough away to be able to switch off. It's proximity to Haldon Forest was ideal for bike riding.

    Disliked:

The facilities are beginning to suffer somewhat from usage - although reasonably new, a couple of the showers were poor and damaged (no good waterflow) and one toilet cubicle seemed to be perpetually a centimetre deep in toilet water from a leaky waste pipe - and on one evening had what was quite evidently sewage all round it and the floor- I did walk to the reception to highlight the problem but being later on in the evening it was unmanned which was doubly disappointing. The loo remained like that until the next day and the female camp was suffered from being a bit stinky.
Sadly we also encountered some bad service from a more elderly member of staff (one of the owners mothers I think) one day. We were caught in a huge prolonged torrential rainstorm while miles out of camp and rang to ask if there was any way the side of our tent could be closed to prevent it flooding - only to have a response comprising of multiple sighs, and very, very curt and abrasive chunters and not much else. Needless to say, when we got back the tent was flooded and door still up. I know that it was a lot to ask, but the campsite isn't that big and there weren't many in at the time. The went tent wasn't a problem (our own fault for leaving the door up) but the bad service was a real shame when the rest of it had been so good.

Been to the site before. Every time we come, David and his team make us feel very welcome and any issues are never too much for them. On arrival we were shown to our pitch by David. Electric hook-up was pointed out and then we were left to get our tent up. Site is a lovely, well kept place to stay, whether just overnight or for a few days.

    Disliked:

Nothing really disliked about the site as you cannot choose who you pitch next too!

Turn left 1.5 miles after the bridge (signposted Underwood) and then turn right after 50 yards into the gravel track to the site.

From the A38 northbound: leave the A38 at the top of Haldon Hill, 100 yards after the Haldon services / Little Chef, at the junction signposted Dunchideock and Exeter Racecourse. Turn left at the slip road T-junction, then fork right after one mile. Continue down the hill for 1.75 miles and turn into the gravel track on the left, just before the T-junction in Clapham.

Local attractions

Bring the bikes to Devon or hire wheels at Haldon Forest Park to take full advantage of the miles of woodland mountain bike and cycle trails for various levels of ability.

Discovery trails, play equipment and several walking trails are also in the forest park including the circular Butterfly Trail and the easy-rated Mamhead Sensory Trail with gorgeous views along the Jurassic Coast and over the Exe estuary. A ten mile horse riding trail is also around for more relaxed forest sightseeing, with horse riding of a different type at the forest’s Exeter Racecourse.

Dartmoor National Park, with more hacking, hiking and biking as well as tor climbing, guided walks and geocaching, is a short drive from the holiday park. It has regular events throughout the year, towns and villages to take in, the famous Dartmoor ponies to spot and Dartmoor Zoo with meerkats, monkeys, lions and more.

Bring binoculars along with the bikes: the forest park and surrounding area are wildlife havens, with rare birds of prey and wild deer in the forest itself and birdwatching a few miles away at the Site of Special Scientific Interest the Exe Estuary: watch oystercatchers showing excellent culinary taste in breaking open mussels at Bull Hill or take a trip to the nature reserve at Dawlish Warren at the estuary’s mouth. If you’re bringing along the bikes, the National Cycle Network Exe Estuary Trail runs to Exmouth from Dawlish.

The sublime sand of Dawlish Warren is one of several South Devon sandy stretches, with the beaches at Teignmouth, Exmouth and Torbay within easy distance of Haldon Forest and the coastal towns of Torquay and Paignton a little further along the coast. Exmouth is the place to don the wetsuit as it’s known for watery sports of all types including diving, windsurfing and sailing; it’s also a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Finally, a stay at Haldon Forest has to include a day or two in Exeter to see its twelfth century cathedral, medieval Guildhall and famous historic quayside with antique shops, restaurants, canoe and boat trips and events such as dragon boat racing and guided tours.
