General

  • Smart family-run park within Woodbury Common
  • Easy drive into Exeter
  • Excellent facilities including bar, bistro and play area

They say an Englishman’s (motor)home is his castle – so when choosing where to brake, you’ll want a spot fit for a king. Castle Brake Holiday Park in east Devon should pass muster: it’s a smart, family-run park within the heathland of Woodbury Common, ideally placed for an invasion of Exeter and the sought-after sands of the Jurassic Coast.

The facilities are splendid: a spotless, cedar-clad amenities block with underfloor heating and family bathrooms; a laundry room; the Castle Inn bar and restaurant for homemade nosh using local ingredients (takeaways are also available); a new play area added in 2018; and ample space for a peaceful stroll and a bit of wildlife spotting. (Please note that the bar and restaurant is not open every evening during low season.)

Castle Brake Holiday Park is within walking distance of the village of Woodbury, which has a handful of good pubs and shops, or it’s an easy ride into Exeter for anything else you might need.

Beautiful scenery and location, can walk to Woodbury common, woodland walk on site. Fantastic shower and toilet facilities . Lovely bar/restaurant on site and friendly bar staff. Dog friendly, could do with a dog hook by the toilet block. Quiet, very friendly, would recommend.

    Disliked:

The motorhome drive on pitches were fine but the caravan pitches had grass at the front so you had to drive your caravan over it. Also if you have a caravan and an awning there is no where to park the car. You have to drive on the grass to park and it has been churned up because of the wet weather. Pitches could be made wider to accommodate all three and take the grass off the front of the pitch so you don't have to drive over it.

Long walk in the dark to the loos/shower block, muddy slippery road, club room/bistro closed, misleading notice on the tumble dryer which meant I lost several coins, having to pay for the hairdryer but no change machine.

For splashy and screamy fun, a wilderness woodland, indoor and outdoor adventure play areas, farm animals and more, head to the Crealy Great Adventure Park, a mere four miles up the road from Castle Brake.

Or try the World of Country Life, which has a petting zoo, indoor and outdoor rides and slides, vintage steam engines, museums and events as eclectic as welly wanging and the six nations ferret races...
