General

  • Smart family-run park within Woodbury Common
  • Easy drive into Exeter
  • Excellent facilities including bar, bistro and play area

They say an Englishman’s (motor)home is his castle - so when choosing where to brake, you’ll want a spot that’s fit for a king. Castle Brake Holiday Park in East Devon should pass muster: it’s a smart, family-run park within the heathland of Woodbury Common, ideally placed for an invasion of Exeter and the sought-after sands of the Jurassic Coast.

The facilities are splendid: a spotless, cedar-clad amenities block with underfloor heating and family bathrooms; a laundry room; a cosy bar and bistro that serves up quality home-made nosh using local ingredients (takeaways are also available); a decent play area for the kids; and ample space for a peaceful stroll and a bit of wildlife spotting. (Please note that the bistro is not open every evening during low season.)

Castle Brake Holiday Park is within walking distance of the village of Woodbury, which has a handful of good pubs and shops, or it’s an easy ride into Exeter for anything else you might need.

Pitch was spotless and VERY well equipped too. Grounds in lovely condition and clearly well looked after.

    Disliked:

Sadly not really child friendly and nothing to do for them. My mistake really as should have read up more.
Staff insisted on me going back to vehicle to get booking ref rather than simply looking at electronic info on screen and checking ID but hey-ho my fault again.
Anyway all I would say is that this isn't a great place for kids, but if no kids and want peace it's probably gr8.

    Disliked:

    Showers sensor too short
Directions lead you down narrow lanes. The warning unsuitable for caravans was at the end if the leaflet.
Dog owners didn't always pick up mess. Pitch was flat but approach was steep so hitching back up was very awkward.

Very clean, great facilities and friendly, helpful staff. Lovely location with lots of nice places to walk nearby. Pitches were nice and level, well maintained and well spaced apart.

    Disliked:

A road ran the other side of a hedge directly behind my tent so was sometimes a bit noisy especially if motorbikes drove past on a night.

Loved the showers and family bathrooms, excellent facilities for young families. Play park was great fun and easy to keep an eye on the kids from the tent site. Really good location, beach, Exeter, Bicton Park etc. all within easy distance.

    Disliked:

There seemed to be a lack of guest supervision, for example cars/motor homes driven at all times of the night. Cars parked on the narrow access lane behind our tent. Dogs off the lead in the camping field which became a nuisance.

For splashy and screamy fun, a wilderness woodland, indoor and outdoor adventure play areas, farm animals and more, head to the Crealy Great Adventure Park, a mere four miles up the road from Castle Brake.

Or try the World of Country Life, which has a petting zoo, indoor and outdoor rides and slides, vintage steam engines, museums and events as eclectic as welly wanging and the six nations ferret races...
