General

  • Scenic and dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, games room and secure off-lead dog area

Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a family- and dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Exeter village of Crockernwell.

As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton.

There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course... but not before kicking back for a bit on site.... Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or pass some time in the small games room before getting back to scenic wanders – this time along country lanes to the thatched haven of Drewsteignton village.

All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude.

Please note that although the site welcomes children, it doesn't have a playground or dedicated area for any kind of ball games, apart from those that can be safely contained within your own pitch.

Please note

Lovely well maintained site.liked the hedges which give you some privacy.not all pitches had them.you are made to feel very welcome, including our dogs which was great.gave us good information about different walks from the site so we didn't have to drive anywhere.despite the weather we had 3 great days of walking.walked to castle drogo area (didn't go into castle or gardens )as we have 2 dogs, fantastic walk.amazing views across wooded valley from near the castle.will be going back as so much more to discover.went to crockernwell via fields and some roads.these are minor roads and any vehicles using them were most considerate drivers.will be going back when site opens again next year.highly recommend.had everything we needed.spotlessly clean facilities.

Lovely position, very well kept, loved dogs are catered for with secured dog run, very well equipped, very clean toilets and showers, we did have a small electric problem on arrival, we phoned the number given and a gentleman arrived and fixed within 5 minutes, we are new at this and we were trying to fill water, the same gentleman came over in his buggy to see if he could help, we didn't have a adapter so he lent us one, loved the farm shop and cafe a stroll away, all in all a brilliant small site, would highly recommend.

A very clean and tidy site with extremely friendly staff. Shower and toilet block very well kept, and has a well stocked shop. Kids enjoyed the games room which has board games and a pool table to keep them entertained, need to mention the free WiFi as well!!! Also a great cafe located near by, within walking distance with access from the site.
Located in an ideal place to visit the many attractions around the area.

This surely has to be the cleanest, tidiest site we have visited in many years.
The site is extremely well laid out with large level hard standing pitches in a circular one way layout. Every pitch is therefore close to the centrally sited toilet and shower block, the toilets are above excellent and would not be out of place in a 5 star hotel. A small games room is there with a pool table and tourist info and a farm shop and cafe is a very short walk down from the site for breakfast etc, there’s also a small petting zoo. There are a few grass pitches available for tents as well.
The site is well lit and has several drinking water stations dotted around, the reception hosts a small selection of essentials at very low prices.
They do say the small touches make an ideal place and that’s certainly true here,
hand sanitiser next to the chemical disposal point, free doggy bags next to the dog walk compound.
Add in free WiFi and you’ve got everything you need.
There’s a bus that stops right outside the site if you want to visit Exeter etc.
Overall Barley Meadows deserves the highest praise and we’ll certainly be back.

    Disliked:

We came late October and the toilet seats were cold at 6am.
Seriously, we couldn’t find fault at all.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool.

There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges.

History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive.

Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
