Barley Meadow Touring Park: Towards the exit

General

  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area

Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell.

As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner.

There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre.

All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Very well laid out and maintained ,with a extremely new modern toilet block. All the staff work very hard to keep this site in top order, and very pleasant to talk to, also on hand to help in any way if required. Excellent dog play area, long enough to chuck a ball which Billy the dog agreed with.
Lovely spot with hills in the distance. So if you want a excellent Adult only site, then this one ticks all the boxes. P.s .Free WIFI and we'll stocked little shop that seemed to have every thing even dog treets, wolf woof. And local farm shop, 5 minute walk from the site.

Thanks Tim, the bus at our entrance sure is a bonus for those who like to pitch and leave, it goes via Okehampton to Bude in one direction and, as you say, Exeter the other. Best wishes, Martin, Leigh & David

The hedges could be cut a bit lower to take advantage of the amazing views.

From the manager...

Thanks Duncan, I have toyed with the idea so many times about taking the hedge out completely and replacing with stock fencing (for the views, like you say), however, we decided ultimately it does more good as a mature hedge, mainly because its a shield from the exposed south west face (and the weather and wind!) and secondly its great for all our little birds, rabbits and other animals. I also think the hedge is nicer for the park from a visual perspective but we take your point about lowering them slightly and will consider in the winter when we top the hedges.
You can still enjoy the wonderful view from the dog walk, reception, pathway and from the higher pitches (especially when the hedges are cut!). Thanks again and hope to see you back soon, Martin, Leigh & David.
ps - if ever you pitch here in the high winds I think you'd understand :-)

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool.

There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges.

History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive.

Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
