General

  • Family holiday park a short stroll from Dawlish Warren
  • Heated indoor and outdoor pool complexes
  • Kids' club, adventure play, dining area and takeaway

You’ll strike gold with a family holiday or short break at Golden Sands Holiday Park, on the doorstep of some of Devon’s top scenic spots and family attractions, a short stroll away from the famous Dawlish Warren beach and nature reserve and with a goldmine of first-class facilities and entertainment on offer.

As it’s a Park Holidays site, Golden Sands is aimed towards making your break as hassle-free as possible: the excellent amenities in this lush countryside location include heated indoor and outdoor pool complexes, a sports area, letting the young’uns go Loopy at the on-site kids’ club, the amusements or the Adventure Land Play Area, and a dining area and takeaway at good-value prices; there’s also a mini mart shop to pick up essentials, and a launderette and washing up area for whoever you can bribe to do the chores.

The clubhouse has free wifi and Sky Sports, with internet (and sports) packages available for a reasonable extra charge, perfect for pool and patio lounging. Guests can also use the facilities at the other Park Holidays site nearby, Dawlish Sands, where there’s an entertainment venue with live acts in the evening as well as an indoor and outdoor pool.

Dawlish Warren and the area around Golden Sands are justifiably popular with families: the beach is safe and sandy, backed with pretty dunes, and packed with good old-fashioned seaside fun - think fairground attractions, crazy golf and ice creams among more - and then there’s the nature reserve, and the spectacular short train journey along the seawall to Teignmouth; take the line in the other direction and it will bring you to the city lights of Exeter).

As of 2013 Golden Sands has merged with the former Park Holidays site Peppermint Park.

Camping pitches were rarely flat, not terribly helpful for pitching a tent!

Toilets, showers, entertainment, time allowed in pool, sinks. Everything was filthy, the soap dispensers in the women's toilets didn't get refilled once empty and the men's soap dispensers were empty our entire stay. Men's showers didn't work properly and only dribbled out water (my husband took a video).

    Disliked:

Tent pinches are an afterthought on a steep slope miles from anywhere. Toilet and shower block were disgusting and not cleaned at all during the weekend that we stayed there. Also bins were overflowing.

Friendly staff, good entertainment 24/08/2017

Very convenient location very close to darkish warren all the shops, pubs etc, very good evening entertainment and good range of entertainment activities for our toddler, clean and nice pool facilities, very family friendly park and had lovely respectful campers

    Disliked:

Did not enjoy the food at all, and the breakfast system desperately needs sorting out, very disappointed with the size and quality of the breakfasts ours was tiny! And I am not one to complain. Dirty and impractical toilet facilities, even your clothes and shoes you put in the dry areas of the showers get wet, would say they are in desperate need of updating as the block looks over 30 years old. Would say only 30% of the whole camping area was actually flat and level. And the toilet blocks are a fair walk unless you are pitch up next to the field entrance by the smelly bins. Also the pool enterance should be made clear with signs as some days you are able to walk in through the side and show your passes yet other days has a sign outside saying exit only!! And then you have to walk through the entertainment area and to the outside all around the side of the pool then to the inside to show passes and access the changing area so very confusing system! I would say this is a very fair review on the whole

The park was very close to a beautiful beach

    Disliked:

The beach was the only good bit, the camping field had so many hills that finding a pitch you could even make do was impossible!!! The toilet and shower facility's were disgusting, dirty toilets, blocked sinks and smelt very bad! I did ask at reception (that was a 20 minute walk from the camping field) and she clearly couldn't be bothered- saying "it is cleaned once a day".
The tent field was not ever checked and noisy guests were not told to keep it down after 11!

Everything about this park was so bad we booked in at a different park. Dirty disgusting rude pool staff. Only decent thing we thought was the pool but when we went to it we found we was only allowed 1 hour pool time including changing then had to get out and que up again to go back in which then was at the staffs discretion if we could. 4 lifeguards and they did nothing but talk amongst themselves and try talk down to people or kids should I say. Don't go we had 1 meal which cost over £80 for all of us and it was pathetic not cooked properly we nearly went home because of it all.

The park is well situated near to Dawlish Warren.

    Disliked:

Most of the camping pitches are on a hillside slope.
The toilets and especially the showers were not clean or of a very good standard.
The bar didn't serve any good quality beer or cider (fosters, kronenburg and Strongbow on tap) so we only went there once and spent the rest of our evenings elsewhere.

Directions

By car:
From most parts of the country, take the M5 motorway to Junction 30 at Exeter. Follow the directions for Dawlish on the A379 which will take you through the villages of Kenton and Starcross. Continue on the A379 until you reach the edge of Dawlish, at which point you will see Dawlish Warren signposted to the left, just before Marine Garage, a Texaco service station. Follow the road into Dawlish Warren, past the Mount Pleasant Inn and down a steep hill. At the bottom of the hill, follow the road around to the left and continue past Gerald’s Supermarket. You will then see the entrance to Golden Sands Holiday Park on the left-hand side.

By train:
Do not book to Dawlish Warren but to Dawlish where there are taxis and a bus service to the park.

Local attractions

Dawlish Warren is a safe and clean family beach with all the old-fashioned activities kids will clamour for: Punch and Judy, amusements and crazy golf among the decorative dunes, as well as chuffing along the sea wall on the train journey to Teignmouth or wandering among the wildfowl and wading birds at the Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve.

Slightly further afield there are coastal resorts like Paignton and Torquay, cantering on horseback in Dartmoor National Park and exploring the gardens and history of Devon: the secret gardens of Powderham Castle will keep the kids enthralled, and they’ll also have a swashbuckling time at the Golden Hind, the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s sixteenth century ship moored at Brixham.

Little monkeys will have a Tarzanly swinging time on the zip slides at Exeter’s Go Ape!, and if they’ve still got a bit too much energy for your liking, take them to burn it off with paintball at the Ashcombe Adventure Centre or brave the Maximus rollercoaster at Crealy Great Adventure Park. Once they’re sitting still, it’s time for some peaceful sightseeing while playing the ‘let’s see who can keep quiet the longest game’: the Dartmouth Steam Railway and cruises along the River Dart are both recommended to keep even little people spellboundingly quiet.

Or you could just pack everyone up and head out of Golden Sands to see where your feet or pedals take you: this area of the country is renowned for its walking and cycling routes, whether you’re cruising along the coastline, foraging through forests, ambling through the area’s villages or making your way around spectacular Dartmoor.

Must see
