General

  • Peaceful Blackdown Hills site with two fishing lakes
  • 15 minutes from Taunton and 30 from Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast
  • In a walkers' paradise: free maps of local trails available on site

This peaceful little site may take its name from the monarch’s honey wine, but these days it’s the food in the area that’s fit for a king: about 20 minutes' walk from the site is the the Half Moon, serving fresh and traditional pub food with side order views over the Culm Valley

Kingsmead Centre is excellent territorytoo for ramblers, cyclists and equestrians, with free maps for all the nearby trails available on site – a local recommendation is the longer-distance Neroche Herepath.

In a wooded vale in the Blackdown Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), Kingsmead also has two coarse fishing lakes which are exclusively reserved for guests’ use, and is home to a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.

The shower and toilet facilities are simple and clean, with no shortage of free hot water. Well-behaved pets are welcome on site.

Lovely clean campsite. Showers and bathrooms were better than many hotels - really great :-)
Lots of footpaths nearby and a local pub (The Halfmoon) with food that could grace any Michelin star restaurant (well the scallops and mussels anyway).

    Disliked:

Nothing - although the dawn chorus is quite loud!

Loved the Kingsmead experience! 19/04/2017

  • Liked:

It had a really relaxed atmosphere. Pick your own pitch. Help on hand from the owners (our EHU wasn't long enough and our levellers didn't quite level for us). Fire pits allowed (for hire or bring your own). Very peaceful site and immaculate facilities, including use of a fridge/freezer. I loved the lack of signal and how unregimented it was on site.

    Disliked:

Only thing I didn't like was the pub that was round the corner was closed but the campsite was so nice it wasn't a problem. I initially thought more showers and toilets might be required BUT I NEVER had to wait in the 3 nights we were there over Easter

Over night stop on way to cornwall 13/08/2016

Reading the reviews before we left but on arrival wondered whether it was the same site we had arrived on!
    Leaving!

    Disliked:

Didnt visit lower facilities block which is apparently newer but top block left a lot to be desired!
Two toilets in gents only one had a door! hot water in one sink, cold water in the other!
The ladies had a shower cubicle which looked fine but the 'door' was just a shower curtain so not so private.
The 2 mile walk (noted as a mile away but I dont think so) to the nearest pub meal as the Merry Harriers had had a fire, so bear in mind if you don't want a long trek! (No fault of the site obviously just an observation) The Half Moon was also pretty expensive.
Lower field very sloped so not ideal for tourers. We stayed at the top as we were only there for one night on route to cornwall.

Modern, clean facilities. Site is in easy reach of M5 motorway making it a good base to go site seeing. Owners of the site are lovely and run pizza and movie nights during August!

    Disliked:

Slight incline on the field and not enough electricity points, some were quite hard to reach unless you had a long hook up lead.

Loved the site, decent pitches with really clean facilities 26/07/2016

Friendly welcome; good quality pitches with lovely clean facilities on site.
Beautiful picturesque lakes for a little wander (and fishing too if that's your thing)
Great communal BBQ facilities and no problem with camp fires.

    Disliked:

We'd planned to visit the pub that was literally a stones throw from the site for an evening meal as it had fab online reviews and acclaimed menu. However, this is currently closed eith significant fire damage.
We walked a couple of miles up the road to the Half Moon Inn - which was well worth the trip - but the walk back in the dark on single track roads wasn't ideal...
