General

Board masters and mistresses have divined for some years that Croyde Bay in north Devon is foamy surfing heaven. Because of its west-facing north Atlantic position, rideable waves break into the lifeguarded waters of the bay virtually all day long at Croyde– possibly a reason why Croyde Bay has hosted surf and music event GoldCoast Oceanfest since 1999?

If you want to stay within rambling distance of festival and/or foam and other north Devon delectables, a pitch at hospitable Croyde View Camping on a hill overlooking the bay will have you in marshmallow-toasting and family-friendly and dog-friendly north Devon surfing heaven: camping pitches are ten minutes’ walk from the surf of Croyde Bay and the easier waves of Putsborough Sands, which allows dogs on its beach in the summer months.

Croyde View Camping has loads of room for the kids to run around/tire themselves out in while knackered surfers recuperate in the evening after a hot shower – tired kids are always a plus… Then spark up the campfire (allowed on certain allocated pitches): bag marshmallows, sausages and other campfire essentials at the two general stores and off-licences in Croyde Bay village or ten minutes’ drive away in Braunton.

If you’re not a surfer but would like to learn despite never having stood on/fallen off a board in your life, the Croyde Bay surf schools will take you gently in hand among the waves. And if you’re not a surfer at all and would rather swallow several pints of sea water than get on a wobbly board in a figure-hugging wetsuit, Croyde Bay village is on the South West Coast Path and within the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to have highly scenic and flora/fauna-filled hikes. Don’t miss out or you might Croy.

Local attractions

Surfers have Croyde Bay, Putsborough Sands and Saunton Sands all near Croyde View Camping, the first two within walking distance and Saunton Sands about five minutes’ drive away. The two and a half miles of Woolacombe Sands, another spiffing north Devon surf spot as well as a smooth ride for windsurfers and kite buggies, meets up with the long golden run of Putsborough Sands, once voted Best Beach in Britain.

At Saunton Sands, surfers, sunbathers, windsurfers and kite flyers have three miles of beach to pick from along with a high-up hike up and around the miles of splendid sand dunes edging the main beach. These lead on to England’s biggest sand dune system Braunton Burrows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Area of Conservation and part of a national nature reserve. Look for over 400 types of plant and several rare animal species, and pat yourself on the back if you spot an amber sandbowl snail when the dunes are damp, as Braunton Barrows is one of only two places in England where it burrows.

Closer to home, Croyde Bay village is on the South West Coast Path and is part of the north Devon coastline managed by the National Trust, including the headland of Baggy Point overlooking Croyde Bay, Putsborough Sands and lovely Lundy Island. Climb the sandstone rocks at the Point or take one of the circular walks from here to Woolacombe or around Bloodhills Cliff or Middleborough Hill to see wildflowers, wildlife and birds.

At Croyde Bay village, the surf shops sell boards, wetsuits and clothes – and pubs, restaurants and a tearoom are also on hand for a scalding cuppa and a Devon cream tea after flailing about in the waves.
