Stowford Village: Hardstanding pitches for caravan or motorhome

General

  • Countryside park on 500 acres, 15 minutes' drive from Woolacombe
  • Woodland walks, nature trails, pool, riding centre and mini zoo
  • Five camping fields and five spacious amenities blocks

Life’s little stresses getting you down? Want to stow yourself away for a countryside break where everything is close to your pitch?

Come along to Combe Martin’s Stowford Village in north Devon for a bit of de-stressing in a rural setting: the park is a mile from the main road down its own private drive and is a well-placed base from which to explore the best of Devon. You can even get your caravan fitted out or fixed up on site – or pick up another one at the caravan sales: now that’s most certainly de-stressing in style…

Set among 500 acres of Devon woodland and meadows, Stowford Village falls into the category of ‘very large’ sites – but fear not if your tastes tend towards the more solitary, as the park is divided into five separate camping and caravan fields and feels like several small sites rolled into one.

The overall size means there are heaps of facilities and activities for you to try your hand at, from cantering around on horseback with the help of the on-site riding centre, to driving the kids crazy with your swish moves at the crazy golf.

Looking for something a bit quieter? There are marked woodland walks into the wildlife-rich Bittadon valley, with nature trails starting and finishing on site, or take the kids to play at Petorama, Stowford Village’s undercover mini zoo. A heated indoor pool is available for a small extra charge.

For putting feet up or letting hair down, the site has two bars (with evening entertainment in peak season), a smart coffee lounge with takeaway, and a licensed restaurant with event nights including hog roast and barbecues. For supplies, Stowford Meadows has a licensed well-stocked shop with ATM.

And finally? Even the dog will de-stress here, with a friendly welcome and a spacious dog-walking area on site…

Lovely site, excellent toilet/shower/laundrette facilities, has chip shop and restaurant on site along with food shop and camping/caravanning spares and work shop. The pitch and put is very large more the size of a par three course covering three large fields.

    Disliked:

NO entertainment after August, September was more like grave yard for caravans. The cut grass was a real pain as it was never collected and with the damp dew and rain it was trampled everywhere in your caravan, in the shops, on your shoes, in the showers. It needs to be collected when cut.
No signal for your mobile phones, you have to go up the road to the garage to get any sort of signal. Very frustrating.

    Disliked:

Their own bar/ restaurant was good but they don't tell you that you need to book it well in advance. The shop is well stocked and reasonably priced.
The franchised cafe alongside it was very poor. They seemed to have run out of basic goods, decaf coffee, mustard. Maybe it was end of season but not impressed at all.

The site was very clean and tidy, so were the toilets and showers. There was a dedicated path for dog walkers. The swimming pool and staff were excellent.

    Disliked:

When I booked I looked at the site and expected the majority of the facilities would be available, especially some sort of entertainment for children. The only things available were the outside play parks and swimming pool. There was only two days in the week that they could see the animals. The site we were on was very hilly and not suitable for a motorhome, we could not get the level that a caravan can. We had to purchase higher wedges for the wheels and a longer lead for electric as the column was too far away for ours (over £100 for both). We wanted to eat on site one evening but it was quite expensive, we are not drinkers but we did have soft drinks one evening in the bar, extortionate prices, half a glass of draught coke was £2.50 and a small fruit shoot was £2.50 too. We went out every day as there was nothing on site, even the soft play had been closed. We did swim on two occasions which was also £2.50 each person (there is a theme here!)
There was a lot of movement of motorhomes while we were there which was due to the slant of the pitches. We could occasionally get onto the wifi but terrible phone signal, a godsend to some! Very disappointed with the actual entertainment facilities.
