Harbour lights, harbour nights…if you’re a sea-faring sort, a stay at Landscove Holiday Park in Brixham should hit the spot: the park is set overlooking a bay in the middle of the English Riviera and has endless options for any time of day or night, with a kids’ club on site, sports field and adventure playground, indoor pool complex and outdoor heated pool, and the Harbour Lights restaurant for when the sun goes down. This well-maintained Park Holidays site also has regular evening entertainment and a chill-out space in the family bar with Sky TV; there’s free wifi in the club room and an amusement arcade with quiz machines and a race track. Take your pick from a swish suite, cottage or chalet, all with linen and TV provided; fully kitted kitchens are also available in the cottages and chalets, and a wifi package is available in accommodation for a reasonable extra charge. Other facilities at Landscove include a launderette and a food shop.

Route directions

From the north, follow the M5 to the end; this then becomes the A380 which leads onto the A3022: follow the signs for Brixham. When nearing Brixham you will see signs for Berry Head. Landscove is just before you actually get onto Berry Head itself (you will pass our sister park Riviera Bay Holiday Park as you head towards Berryhead). The journey time from the end of the M5 is approximately an hour depending on traffic and time of day.

Local attractions

The harbour village of Brixham is a short stroll away for sightseeing, fishing and all things nautical: there’s the Smuggler’s Story telling the 3D tale of smugglers in Brixham in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, an annual regatta each year in August and the Golden Hind, the full-size replica of Sir Francis Drake’s sixteenth century ship. If you’re in town during summer, turn up on a Thursday for swashbuckling shenanigans with the Brixham Buccaneers, a local charity group which has also designed a family treasure trail around the town – details are on their leaflets which give info on Brixham and its history. There’s also the fifteenth century National Trust property Greenway near the town, described by local clime sleuth Agatha Christie as ‘the loveliest place in the world’. Also on the Landscove Holiday Park doorstep is the National Nature Reserve Berry Head with a country park and Napoleonic forts, all set within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the South West Coast Path: have a wander here or on the coast path itself, although we wouldn’t expect you to complete the entire 630-mile stretch in one day. There’s less strenuous local sightseeing on the seven-mile long Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway along the Torbay coast and bordering the Dart Estuary, with river trips to be had along the Dart between Dartmouth and Totnes. Kids can meet unicorns and get splashed on the water coaster at Crealy Adventure Park; bounce on the trampolines, go gaga on the go-karts and hoot at the owls at the biggest farm activity park in the south-west Pennywell Farm, or take a trip to Torquay to the interactive zoo Living Coasts. Paignton Zoo is also within easy reach for tropics trekking and savannah strolling, the Ashcombe Adventure Centre at Dawlish has clay shooting, archery and fishing, while inland there’s Dartmoor National Park within reach for hiking, biking, prehistoric landscapes and Dartmoor ponies.
