General

  • Calm site in the grounds of a north Devon outdoor activity centre
  • A 15-minute stroll from Appledore; 10 minutes' drive from Westward Ho!
  • Estuary views; discounted watersport sessions available for guests

Skern Lodge is a popular outdoor activity centre set on the edge of the quiet coastal village of Appledore. With 22 acres of land to its name and direct access to the tidal waters of the Taw and Torridge estuary, this site is a prime pick for relaxing north Devon hols in a gorgeous natural setting.

The pitches at Skern Lodge are in an open field and have plenty of space between them. Toilets, showers and a washing-up point are available here, but other than that this is a back to basics site free of unnecessary frills. The site is keen to keep its impact on the environment to an absolute minimum – once you've seen these serene surrounds, there's a strong chance you'll be keen to do the same.

Head to reception upon arrival and let them know you're staying at the site if you fancy a discounted activity session – rafting, river kayaking and surfing can all be tried out with full supervision from expert instructors. Appledore village centre is a 15-minute stroll away – head here for a trip to the pub, to sample local grub at an independent deli or simply for a coastal stroll. Bideford (10 minutes' drive) is also close by – make tracks here to catch the ferry out to Lundy Island (crossing time about two hours).

Great spot, amenities were clean. Nice and quit campsite. Very close to Appledore and only short drives to all other attractions.

    Disliked:

Just a little to close to the road, which could get busy through out the day.

Friendly helpful staff, beautiful views and so convenient- walked into Appledore and a 5 min drive down to the beach. Showering facilities cleaned regularly.

    Disliked:

Needs a light in the washing up area for washing up after dinner - would also prefer to have campfire next to own tent - it’s harder with younger kids as cannot go to the shared area when they are sleeping, so we didn’t end up having a campfire and would love to sit up for a couple of hours after kids are asleep but it just got too dark and cold so ended up not being far behind them.

Great views from the camping field, excellent activities and instructors, good value for money, great location.

    Disliked:

Road noise - the front row of pitches are 2m from the road. It was like sleeping on the grass verge! Vehicle noise did not stop until after 11pm and started again around 6am. Not enough toilets for the site (1 male,2 female). Wash rooms always closed for cleaning around 7/8am, just when campers are waking up!

Amazing few days on the campsite at the end of August. Beautiful view of sunset from the field.

We travelled as a group of two families with girls aged 8 but stayed on separate pitches.

This campsite is perfect even in wet weather. Westward Ho! beach and resort is a five minute drive away and great for bodyboarding/beginner surfing which can obviously be done in the rain. Tip - check tide times.

Plus the campsite is literally right next to Skern Lodge Activity Centre which offers lots of outdoor all-weather activities. Tip - call ahead to book as it gets sold out very quickly.

It's right off the SW coastal path so probably good for walkers as well.

Restaurants, pubs and cafes of Appledore village are a 10 minute stroll away but take a good torch for the 50m or so stretch of unlit road if walking back at night.
Great for quay jumping and crabbing at high tide.

Shopping - There is a Tesco local in Westward Ho! and a Morrisons in Bideford. Both are a drive away. There is a higher end deli/convenience store in Appledore called Johns.

    Toilets and showers very clean.

Flavia was superhelpful answering our various queries as was Daisy who ran our activity afternoon on the assault course and archery field.

    Will definitely visit again!
