  • Views of the Devon hills and north Devon coastline

Wheeeee! Adventure sorts, you're sorted. Adventure Camping is a campsite right behind the Ultimate Adventure Centre near Bideford in Devon, where there's all manner of adrenalising activities to try – and all in the scenic surroundings of comely Devon countryside and hills with views of the Devon coast.

What's promised as 'the ultimate assault course' is laid on at the adventure centre, alongside other active options like coasteering, laser tag, body zorbing, mountain boarding, kayaking, a surf school, climbing wall, and high ropes, low ropes and a zipwire. Small campsite so children couldn't go far and toilets and showers very clean. Staff friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

Our pitch was right next to a large pond with no fence around it. I was very on edge having a 5 and 2 year old playing near it. Young children are naturally enquisitive so kept going back to it. Wouldn't recommend this site if you're children are very young.
Also no shop on site but Asda less than 5 minutes away.

Friendly young lady that checked us in.

    Disliked:

The advertising photo is misleading and makes you believe the campsite is in Westward Ho, right next to the beach. When in fact it is not anywhere near the sea and a ten minute drive to Westward Ho. No where near and shops or anything.
The Pitch was next to a busy road s although it is considered remote it is not a quite site at all.

    Staff. Location. Clean.

    Disliked:

This place seems unfinished. All very new but very much needs sinks to wash dishes in every camp field. Also no hooks in shower's for clothes and towels. The sinks in tiolet are very squashed together and no mirror's. Also drinking water taps at camp site. And maybe fire pits or similar.

Good Place to stay 31/08/2016

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Leigh E. Confirmed

  • Atlantic lodge
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

Good spacious lodge with bunk beds with room for up to 16 people.
    Clean toilet and shower block
Plenty of outdoor lighting so could find way from lodge to toilets easily in the dark without the need for a torch.
Within easy reach of Bideford town and nearby beaches and other tourist attractions

    Disliked:

Not very well signposted - just one sign tucked in the side of the road as the road takes a bend - very difficult to spot. Could do with a brown tourist sign on the opposite side of the road

Road leading into the side was absolutely full of potholes, though some of it was smooth, so they may be working on repairing that gradually.

Sensor for the lights in the toilet was on the outside of the cubicle, so once you sat down, it would soon go dark unless someone walked past outside! need to move the sensors to the inside

Spotlights in lodge could be a bit bright at night even though not all of them were working.

Clean facilities, good amenities 31/08/2016

We were a group of 7, and felt that the amenities of the campsite were excellent, really clean toilets, and good showers for a campsite. Pitch size had plenty of room for us all too.

    Disliked:

We found the staff to be very friendly, but we couldn't help but feel we were being "checked on" every night, which we thought was a little strange. Previous campsites I have been to have left us to it, but have always been available if we felt we needed anything. I think this is the only criticism of the campsite.

Clean showers and toilets always stocked with plenty of loo roll. Pitches were level and we had plenty of space. We received a warm welcome and some of the staff were friendly without being too intrusive.

    Disliked:

Over attentive staff, we felt as if they were checking up on us which made us feel quite uncomfortable at times. Very long walk to the beach. No atmosphere due to the number of people camping.

Directions

By road
From the north via the M5, leave the M5 at Junction 27. Follow the A361 towards Barnstaple. Take the A39 towards Bideford. Look out for the brown Ultimate Adventure Centre signs on the A39 just outside Bideford.

From Cornwall, take the A39 past Bude towards Bideford. You will drive past Hartland and Clovelly. Look out for the brown Ultimate Adventure Centre signs on the A39 just outside Bideford.

By bus
The only bus which passes The Ultimate Adventure Centre is the 319 Stagecoach bus from Barnstaple town centre to Hartland. The nearest bus stop is outside the church in Abbotsham, which is approximately 2- 3 minutes' walk from the site. However, if you ask the driver nicely, they usually stop outside the car park to drop you off.

By train
The nearest train station is Barnstaple, approximately 10 miles away. From here, a taxi will cost around £20, or you can hop on the 319 bus which stops outside of the train station (details above).

Local attractions

Adventure Camping is in the small village of Abbotsham, niftily placed for the best of Devon attractions and the nearby beaches of day trips to Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and other Devon beaches.

Less than half an hour's drive will see you at Saunton Sands, the eminently suitable surfing beach, and Braunton Burrows, the eminently spectacular sand dune system that's the biggest in England. Botany and nature buffs will find over 400 species of vascular plants and several rare species here; take a guided walk for the easiest way to spot.

Closer to home, on the edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northam Burrows Country Park is a smaller but still very viewsome option for nature walks among its sand dunes, salt marsh and grassland. Access it from the beach at Westward Ho! and drop in at the visitor centre at the northern end of the beach, open to the public in summer.

Heavenly hikes on the South West Coast Path are just a mile away, and nearby Bideford has two of Devon's toppest attractions for kids and families, the Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep.

See also the fishing village of Clovelly along the coast to the south-west, a day out among the greenery of RHS Rosemoor, another among the waves of surfing spot Woolacombe, or a drive to Dartmoor for yet more outdoorsy activities: you're on an adventure camping trip after all…

Must see
