  • Laidback Devon family site with adventure activities available
  • A five-minute drive to Westward Ho! beach; 15 minutes to Barnstaple
  • 35-acre site within walking distance of pub and Big Sheep theme park
Adventure Camping is a spacious site in the grounds of the Inspiring Learning North Devon Centre, a mile and a half from the centre of Bideford and in the scenic surrounds of comely Devon countryside (with views both up to the hills and over to the coast). This is a splendid spot to settle in for lots of Devon hotspots: you can walk to the Big Sheep theme park (or stroll to the local pub, five minutes away…) and a short drive gets you to places like Westward Ho! beach or to Barnstaple to hit the Tarka Trail. And of course you'll want to allocate some time to the fab range of antics organised by the site: a number of different adventure activities will be available to book during your stay, including climbing, high ropes, an assault course, kayaking and paddleboarding (please use the requests section on your booking if you'd like to enquire in advance about these). There’s a whopping 35 acres of space to play with here, so plenty of scope to play games, take strolls around the lake or light up a barbecue or firepit to chat with pals. Dogs are welcome on site so feel free to bring them along for your Devon break here.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass campervan pitch

Liked: Sadly it was a grey old weekend but because it was September and quiet we were told we could park our Campervan anywhere…so we did! Lovely level pitch, clean showers and toilets. We were off early for a 100th birthday celebration but would definitely have stayed on a bit to enjoy the walks and scenery.

Disliked: A few more trees and or hedges would be nice and bigger hooks in the showers …oh and the shower spray very nearly wets your clothes!!

Bunkhouse (family, private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Lovely clean and tidy site with onsite activities at very reasonable prices. A huge shout out to Ollie, Jess and Jacob who made our boys afternoon activities even more fun with all their banter back and forth between themselves and our boys - huge smiles all round! Reception staff very patient, helpful and knowledgeable regarding the local area. We weren't limited to 2 dogs, which helps enormously. We stayed in a family bunkhouse - perfect choice as we preferred to be out and about most of the time so just somewhere to sleep was required. Close to the coast and plenty of attractions.

Disliked: No dislike whatsoever. However, suggestions on improvements would be to add a microwave to the communal kitchen area and a field where dogs could be exercised off lead.

Bunkhouse (family, private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Lovely site the activities on site were cool staff really good with both adults and the kids. The adventure cabin is very spacious with clean w/c and showers beds although we brought our own bedding with us there were some there and clean. The rooms were a little too over heated for my likening but hay ho there’s a window to open :). Local shopping outlets and close to a lovely beach was very helpful and across the street there is the big sheep great family day out and they sell mead very nice;) surprisingly you can’t here anything on the site from there so if you want to relax then this is the place at a really affordable price.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but the rooms were very hot.

Meadow non-electric grass tent pitch (no pets)

Liked: The water pressure was good and the pitches were nicely designed. Once the trees mature this will be a nice spot. Lots of activities available and close to westward ho beach.

Disliked: Campsite was adjacent to a sewage treatment plant which had a strong smell of excrement. Road noise from the A39 is loud.

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to review us. We are pleased to hear that you had a positive stay with us. We are sorry that the smell from the nearby sewage treatment plant effected your stay. We are currently looking at ways to ensure the plant isn't visible from our pitches but unfortunately the smell is out of our hands. We hope to see you back again soon. Kind regards, The Adventure Camping Team.

Local attractions

Adventure Camping is in the small village of Abbotsham, niftily placed for the best of Devon attractions and the nearby beaches of day trips to Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and other Devon beaches. Less than half an hour's drive will see you at Saunton Sands, the eminently suitable surfing beach, and Braunton Burrows, the eminently spectacular sand dune system that's the biggest in England. Botany and nature buffs will find over 400 species of vascular plants and several rare species here; take a guided walk for the easiest way to spot. Closer to home, on the edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northam Burrows Country Park is a smaller but still very viewsome option for nature walks among its sand dunes, salt marsh and grassland. Access it from the beach at Westward Ho! and drop in at the visitor centre at the northern end of the beach, open to the public in summer. Heavenly hikes on the South West Coast Path are just a mile away, and nearby Bideford has two of Devon's toppest attractions for kids and families, the Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep. See also the fishing village of Clovelly along the coast to the south west, a day out among the greenery of RHS Rosemoor, another among the waves of surfing spot Woolacombe, or a drive to Dartmoor for yet more outdoorsy activities: you're on an adventure, after all…
