  • Kitchen facilities and firepit area on site; pub a few minutes' walk
Now this is a lot of luxury… Coutts Glamping is a small and secluded site with well-equipped accommodation in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in north Cornwall. It's surrounded by fields with grazing sheep and horses, and there are fine views out over the surrounding countryside and the peaks of Bodmin Moor. After a little taste of the views on site, a short 100-metre stroll takes you to a gorgeous spot that looks out over the Camel Estuary towards Padstow (a particularly spectacular vista at sunset, say the owners…). For more roaming it's a five-minute drive to the town of Wadebridge and only a couple of miles to Rock and the scenic coastal walk to Polzeath. The roomy accommodation units at Coutts are fully kitted out and have a woodburning stove as well as a small camping kitchen annex in each (fully kitted out with all you might need; just bring your own food and drink). Each one also has a table and chairs for outdoor dining, or you can make your way to the social gazebo or the seating around the firepit/barbecue area. Amenities on site include a modern toilet and shower block with one toilet per accommodation unit, along with two wetroom showers. A shared utility room has phone-charging sockets, dishwashing facilities with hot and cold running water, a microwave, a large fridge and a freezer which has the ice blocks for use in the cool boxes in your kitchen annex. The award-winning Quarryman Pub and Restaurant is a few minutes' walk away.

Waves shepherd's hut

Liked: Area I have fond memories of visiting this part of Cornwall from my late teens when we tended to spend time around the towns of Wadebridge and Padstow and the beach at Rock. Now many years later, I was looking for smaller beaches with rock pools and with the aid of Google earth identified Booby’s and Travone Bays as suitable locations, both of which I found to be both beautiful and ideal for young children. I won’t go into the pros and cons of these further here. Site Coutts Glamping is to be found at the end of a single track and a short drive from the A39 at West Hill, near the Royal Cornwall Show Ground. On site parking, like most other amenities, is specific to the accommodation unit within the site and therefore named. It’s wise to know the name of your unit before leaving so that on arrival for the first time you can identify and park in the correct place. The site is small and has and safe and intimate feel about it. The units and the amenities are set out around a very well-manicured lawn. There is a mix of yurt, Shepherd Hut and log cabin style accommodations all offering a variety of size. The toilets are specific to the unit you’re staying in and are spotlessly clean and provided with everything thing needed. There are two communal showers, both are like you might find at home, there being a valve on the wall with a hose leading to a shower head. The showers have a good flow, and the temperature can be fully controlled. Both have a removable seat and good access. There is a small ‘Utility’ area in which one will find a larder style fridge and freezer. Both of which have named compartments for each unit. There was just two of staying in our unit and I found the amount of storage adequate, but I suspect that if I were part of a larger group the storage space may not have been enough, especially if you intend to prepare your own food rather than eating out. Two freezer packs are supplied, which we found very useful. The washing up area is to be found at the back of the utility and is comprised of a single sink and drainer. There is a small microwave. The utility area is small and two people make it feel crowded so you will need to pick your opportunities to use it.

Disliked: The Lawn area in the centre of the site provides a wonderful safe area to play games, however, in my opinion, although there is almost no traffic the addition of a fence with a child proof gate to the car parking area would have given me a greater sense of safety for smaller children. There is a BBQ and fire pit area where one can BBQ and sit and eat and although we did not take up the offer, the site owners can provide Marshmallows for toasting. There is a shed with a lockable locker to enable one to charge phones, tablets and other small devices. There is log cabin lounge for communal use as a lounge with sofas and a large modern TV. There is a communal covered eating area with tables and chairs and bench seats. All units and communal areas have pretty fairy lights which provide lighting for the site and look amazing at night. Shepherds hut As there was only the two of us, we chose the shepherds hut to stay. This is a rectangular wooden structure with a curved roof and painted a pretty pale blue. It has a veranda at the front and lockable door [keys are provided]. The shepherds hut contains a double bed, a two-seater sofa [not large enough for a child to sleep on, unless very young], a small stove [which you will need to purchase firewood] a small table. There are only 4 coat hooks for hanging space, but there is a very large area of storage underneath the bed for suitcases etc. There is a top hung window with internal shutters to provide light and ventilation, but it does look out onto the outside eating area to both the shepherds hut itself and the unit next door, so you will need to close the shutters for privacy. At the back of the shepherd’s hut is a shed annex kitchen. Despite its temporary feel, it is perfectly clean and contains everything you are likely to need. There is a standpipe to provide water to this unit. [each unit has their own supply] Owners Debbie and John are lovely and were there to greet us on arrival and on departure and seem to be permanently but not intrusively available. Communication Communications with Debbie were great. We had an issue with the payment but, it was quickly and easily sorted out without fuss by email. Summary A small intimate, immaculately clean, well laid out site that feels friendly and safe. Owned and run by a friendly and available husband a wife team in a beautiful area of Cornwall.

Local attractions

The town of Wadebridge is a five-minute drive from Coutts: here you'll find several shops and cafés, supermarkets and a sports centre with a fully-equipped swimming pool. Hire bikes in Wadebridge too if you haven't brought your own wheels and pedal the Camel Trail to Padstow or Bodmin. Also nearby, take the ferry across the River Camel to Rock and from the ferry landing stroll the South West Coast Path to Polzeath; this is an easy three-mile stretch around Daymer Bay and the head of the Camel Estuary. Surfers have the waters of Newquay's world-famed Fistral Beach to tackle, or you could tackle a day at Camel Creek Adventure Park about 15 minutes' drive away. The zoo and aquarium at Newquay are about another 15 minutes from there. The harbour town of Padstow and the ancient stone circles and Stone Age settlements of Bodmin Moor are both within half an hour by car; within an hour you'll also reach the many excellent historic houses and the very popular Cornish attractions of the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
