General

Green camping on partly-cleared moorland (which is part of a heather regeneration project) in south-west Cornwall. The site overlooks the sea and is near the small town of St Just and Sennen beach. This is Wild West Penwith, so be prepared for all sorts of weather, wildlife and birds, and compost toilets. It's near a very minor road that wiggles from farm to farm for about three miles between St Just and Sennen.

We aim to keep our prices on the cheap side. There is a large, dry barn used as a communal space where you can socialise, read, or make music or a cup of tea on a wet day. The low-level climbing frame, trampolines or a game of football will keep the kids amused in the evening while you relax and watch the sun set over the western ocean.

Water is provided by a modern hand pump from a deep borehole - it's clean and very cold. The campsite also has an unheated shower set up, a wash area and a sink. We also have a communal firepit and (if you stick some firewood under the tank!) a hot tub. The newer of the two compost toilets has a door and a seat.

The hot tub is free of charge but campers must provide their own firewood (available in bags from a shop about three miles down the road) and you have to fill it yourselves (with hand-pumped water from the borehole).

Lovely to camp in a large field with lots of space. No noisy neighbours or barbecues - peaceful, natural camping with fabulous views. Plenty of room for my two rescue collies to run around - away from other campers. Camping as it should be!

Pleasantly surprised at the amount of space given the time of year. Love the basic laid-back nature of the site and the great views. Good for children to run around.

    Disliked:

Not really much to dislike other than the grass could possibly do with a cut in the large field. But no worries really.

The site was remote and wild if you wanted to get away from it all.

    Disliked:

Though I clicked toilet and shower block on the pitchup site, when we arrived there was only an earth toilet up a flight of steps, [though the person in charge said there was another] and a one cold water shower. It was not what I expected having requested facilities and I did not stay.

From the manager...

I remember you quite well - you seemed nervous when you arrived so (i thought, kindly) i suggested you looked around before you committed to staying. Is that why you gave us only 1 out of 5 for customer service? And why a 1 out of 5 for location? I am confused.

Loved the area, the surrounding gorse bushes were very pretty. It had a very back to nature feel that was the perfect compromise between my needing some form of facilities and my boyfriend wanting to just pitch up an a field wherever was convenient. The barn was lovely and useful for us when it rained as we could cook in there rather than out of the back of our car and leave some money to contribute to gas. We didn't try the shower, strip washing instead as we weren't sure about risking the cold! But over all a delightful campsite to stay on that suited us well. When we moved on we missed th privacy it provided and and scenic area it was in thoroughly!

The view was absolutely amazing and the field was not amazingly far from the beaches and other attractions. We were allowed to make our own campfire which not all areas allow. One of the owners made a bath tub for the kids to sit in during the cold days which was really nice and got my son very warmed up. There is an inside area which you can sit in and a trampoline for everyone to use.

    Disliked:

The ground wasn't very flat so it was uncomfortable to sleep on. Also, the grass was extremely wet in the mornings and evenings, and the weather wasn't the best on this occasion. Furthermore, the roosters kept waking us up very early morning due to their loud wake up calls between each other.

Directions

Take the A3071 St Just road for about 6 miles west out of Penzance (if going through Penzance just keep going around the ring road and turn right at the last roundabout). Around 3/4 mile before St Just, the road goes over an angled crossroads at which you need to turn a hard left (signposted to Numphra and Sancreed).

Continue up here about 300 yards, taking the second turn off on the right (there's a small sign to Roselands Caravan Park). Follow this road as it passes the caravan park on the left, winds right and left through a farmyard (Little Dowran), goes down and up a small hill and turns hard right past the dirt track (signposted to Bartinney Barns) on your left. After another 100 yards, there is a big metal gate (into an apparently empty field) on your left there is a painted sign saying Numphra Downs Farm. Drive in, park at the bottom of the field (see the barn and trampolines) and put up your tent.

Local attractions

Sennen and Gwenver beach are great for surfing. The area is wonderful for walking (especially through the wild flowers in the spring) and cycling. Lands' End, Penzance, the Tate Gallery at St Ives and other attractions are near enough for a rainy day.

Three miles away, sea surrounds the campsite in three compass directions, with many wild coves and secret places to explore. There are rock pools to swim in, bays to snorkel with the seals and fish, the coastal footpath (and its links), artists' studios, cafés, ancient sites, stone circles and monuments, and of course the local celebrations in St Just (Lafrowda) and Penzance (Maisey Day). Folk clubs, real ale and good honest ethical food, fresh fish, trips to the Scilly Isles, surf schools, kayaking, horse riding and birdwatching are also within reach.
