General

  • Friendly hidden park in a Cornish wildlife haven
  • Two miles from St Ives and five from Penzance
  • Excellent evenings with bbqs, communal firepit and first-class sunsets

Hidden in the Cornish countryside, with some of the most spectacular sunsets we've have seen anywhere, but set only two miles from the buzz of St Ives… come and feel lost at Cornwall's corkingly scenic and very friendly Lower Penderleath Farm.

As we often do at Pitchup.com, we'll firmly advise you to go and click on the site pics before reading any further, as even our pithy puns and turns of phrases will never do justice to those sunsets… The whole setup is in a serene Cornish countryside, filled with wildlife and with splendid views all around: the coastline is only a few miles away and the farm is an easy base from which to explore the western edge of the Penwith Peninsula.

The nearest beaches from Lower Penderleath Farm are between two and three miles away and lively St Ives between five and eight minutes' drive – or walk it in about an hour if you feel so inclined (plenty of taxis are available in town to zip you and your tired feet back to base).

On site, settle down for the sunset around the communal fire bowl (evenings are fairly fab here and as it's a family site noise is kept to a minimum after 10pm). Or settle down by your own fire bowl or barbecue instead (just bring along your own wood or charcoal and remember that open fires aren't allowed). A pub serving food is about 15 minutes' walk away via a footpath across the fields if you don't fancy firing up.

In the mornings, dawn patrol type guests surface for an early surf at St Ives, Hayle or any of the many other surfing spots around the Cornish coast; others emerge a bit later for a coastal walk, a climb on the north coast cliffs, a bit of birdwatching or a spot of photography...

The decent and clean facilities on site include a loo and shower block with hot water and washing-up areas, an area for washing off and hanging up wetsuits and surfboards, and a fridge freezer for guests to store cooler packs and non-perishables.

The campsite is in a beautiful location with amazing sunset views. There's lots of space and it was not too busy when we visited. The facilities are very good (and included in the price), well-maintained and clean (showers are awesome).

The campsite is ideally located as well, easy to access the coast of St Ives, whether by walking or car.

Overall we had a great experience and would definitely go again.

    Disliked:

There are only three showers, but can see that some more are being constructed!

Friendly well maintained site out of the way, plenty of places to pitch up your camp. The views across the moors were fantastic and the sunsets were incredible, being able to have a real fire made the evenings an adventure especially when the stars were visible. Russell the owner was constantly on hand and we found him friendly and very helpful. Plenty of hot water and clean toilets

Fantastic site! We could choose our own pitch and the whole set up was lovely, private and spacious, yet could still chat with neighbouring tents and campers which was great. Plenty of toilets and showers, which were always so clean, with lovely hot water. Excellent facilities such as fridge/freezers, wet suit baths and phone charging. Roger (the owner/manager) was always around to chat and answer questions. The site is only a short drive to St Ives! We had a brilliant time and would definitely recommend.

Lovely peaceful spot, enjoyed exploring the area on foot, also good base to see St Ives and surrounding areas to visit. Campsite was clean and plenty of space between tents. The ground good for pitching a tent and grass in lovely condition.

    Disliked:

There weren't enough showers or sinks or pot washing facilities so often queueing for some time.

The campsite is close to St Ives and surrounding areas of interest, as well as its close proximity to local beaches. Lovely pub with fantastic food and dog friendly a short walk through the fields from the campsite. Russell was a friendly and approachable host. The campsite is situated on a hillside with lovely views to surrounding hills and has the opportunity for wonderful sunsets. Pitches not too close together although we were with friends, so chance to spread out and not feel like you are being encroached on!

    Disliked:

With only 3 showers to the number of pitches there was a few times where queuing occurred but if you avoid 'peak' times then this shouldn't be a problem!

Everything - Couldn't fault the site, great location, very clean, the guy that owns and runs the site is very friendly and helpful. Toilets, showers, wash basins all clean and water pressure good. Also a small room to charge your phone if you need to. You can also rent BBQ's, you just have to ensure it is raised from the grass. Would definitely return, hopefully for a week next time! (a weekend wasn't long enough).

The location is only a few miles from the main part of st Ives and Penzance so days out were easy, showers are free, and there are toilets and pan washing up areas and fridges to keep your food fresh

    Disliked:

If your planning on a trip to st Ives parking is difficult and mostly full but the price ain't bad you just may be driving around a while to find somewhere

Directions

Please note, if you allow the satnav or TomTom to direct you in, it will probably take you via Crowlas and Nancleadra. If you enter the lane from this direction, you will find the lane a lot narrower (still doable, but less comfortably). Entering the lane from the Towednack Crossroads side is the best way to approach (as per the directions below) as the lane from this direction has been widened to take large lorries

On the A30 from Exeter, once you reach the Hayle bypass, take the third exit at the roundabout to St Ives (A3074). At the second mini roundabout, about 500m from the A30, turn left onto Mill Hill and follow the road until you reach the T-junction with the B3311. Turn left and 200m after the junction turn right and veer left down the small lane. We are about 0.75 miles further down the road on the right.

Local attractions

Hit the beaches, restaurants, galleries, craft shops and cafés of arty St Ives as a first stop, then sneak over to the pirate HQ of Penzance five miles from the farm, also a super spot for sailing.

If you're up (down?) for diving or snorkelling, Lamorna Cove is the location, about five miles south of Penzance, and Sennen Cove is topping for surfing alongside St Ives and Hayle.

Both St Ives and Penzance have shoals' worth of sea fishing available from chartered boats too; if you fancy freshwater fishing, golfing, climbing or horse riding there are lots of options locally (ask Lower Pentreath Farm owner Russell for tips or check out the tourist info at reception).

One of the most popular places in the region is the rocky island of St Michael's Mount and its medieval castle in Mount's Bay at Marazion: take a boat out to or walk across the sand in low tide. At Newlyn, take a coastal tour to also very scenic Mousehole (and did you know that the Lamorna granite of its pier is the same used to build the Thames Embankment?).

More high-quality highlights in the area? Try the utterly fab (darling) Minack Theatre near communications centre Porthcurno, donning a hard hat at Geevor Tin Mine, or heading to the north coast and the surf at Portreath, Porthtowan and Newquay.

Must see

  • Tate St Ives (2.5 miles)
  • St Michael's Mount (4.8 miles)
  • Cornwall Industrial Discovery Centre (11.3 miles)
