General

  • Attractive park in meadows and woodland, family-run for generations
  • Stream and lake on site for fishing
  • Takeaway and bar available in high season

Ever been to one of those parks which have been run by the same family for generations and those who have been welcoming guests for decades? Pensagillas Park, at Cornwall’s St Austell, has been run by the Kent family for six generations and its oodles of park pride provide a pristine place for pitching up.

Pensagillas has had guests staying here since 1970; it’s all looked after and laid out to be tidy and attractive, with trees, hedging, shrubs and a tarmac roadway connecting the grass meadows. The pitches are in a five-acre field at the end of a private drive, with Cornish countryside views to hand anywhere you pitch up.

Once you’ve sorted your berth, have a stroll around the park meadows and woodlands, give an enthusiastic greeting to the farm animals or explore the farmland at the other end of the private drive beside the camping field: there are footpaths leading from here as well as fields to wander.

And bring your rod: there’s an old mill with stream on site for contemplative casting off (and/or picnics), and a two and a half acre coarse fishing lake on site to land roach, tench, golden rudd and carp of up to 28lb.

The well-maintained shower block comes with covered outside areas for washing-up and a laundry room with washers and dryers. Wifi is available on site.

During high season, there’s a takeaway and a cosy bar serving beer and cider, with more tipples and food available in the local village a couple of miles away.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The whole experience at Pensagillas was a positive one. We loved the site and the fact that it was in a remote location. We had a disabled adult with us and everyone who worked at the park were amazing with her. We enjoyed ourselves so much we booked to return next year.

The park was clean, tidy, quiet and well situated with generous pitch sizes. The facilities were excellent (the most glamorous campsite shower rooms I've ever seen) although the shop could do with more stock - a potential goldmine waiting to be exploited. The on site food was good and just what we needed when we arrived late. Plenty of room for children to run about, kick a ball, fly kites etc and had the feel of a more basic, less populated site but with good on site amenities. Just my kind of place. My non camping friend who came to stay loved it too so we will all be back next year but for longer!

Beautifully maintained site only a few miles drive from picturesque Mevagissey.
Spacious pitch with electricity and water nearby. Facilities on site included a take-away and bar/restaurant (which provided breakfasts and evening meals) all at reasonable prices. Showers and toilets clean and tidy. The on-site shop stocked a great range of basic items from food to toiletries to alcohol, all at affordable prices. There was also the option of purchasing local meats which was lovely. This was fantastic as there is not local shop to walk to.
The addition of the fishing lake was fantastic. A beautifully maintained lake stocked with some great fish. My carper husband had some screaming lines at times showing that there are some sizeable fish in there. However, my son was thrilled to be using maggots and catching a fish on almost every cast!!
The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful and happy to stop and chat at any time showing a real interest in their holiday makers.
We will definitely keep this as a site to revisit or to recommend to friends in the future. The price paid was great value as it outshone sites we have stayed on where we have paid over £40 per night and been charged additional fees for fishing!

Toilet, shower and washing up facilities were faultless. Guy who runs it was so helpful and knowledgeable. Beautiful meadow site. Easy to feel sociable with other campers but just as easy to seclude yourself and feel you've got the whole place to yourself. Very clean and well kept in general too!

A lovely campsite in a great central location for travelling in the area around St Austell. The facilities on site are very good - my husband commented on the fact that the shower block by reception is about the best he's seen wherever we've been camping. The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. There's a small bar on site which serves excellent food - the home-produced burgers are amazing (and very filling) and the lemon roulade is to die for! This was our first visit to Pensagillas, but we spoke to a number of people on site who'd been visiting for a number of years, and we'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a campsite in Cornwall.

Directions

From the M5, turn off at junction 31 to Okehampton/Exeter and go on to the A30. Stay on the A30 for about 70 miles then take the first exit left for St Austell. Go through Bugle until you come to a mini roundabout and go straight over.

Coming in to St Austell round the sharp right-hand bend, go through two sets of traffic lights. At the T-junction, turn right for Truro (A390). Follow this road for approx 2-3 miles and fork left for the B3287 (the sign should say Tregony). Follow this road for 2 miles. At the end of the road is a T-junction - turn left at this junction. Follow this road for one mile.

You will see the sign for Pensagillas at the end of the drive. Turn right into the drive and the campsite is a few hundred yards down the drive on the left. If you have any problems please do not hesitate to contact us.

Local attractions

Pensagillas Park has tourist information on site if you’re stuck for info on what to do, but any problem you're likely to have will be trying to narrow your list down... Pensagillas is at the busy St Austell and one of the closest parks to one of Cornwall’s biggest attractions, the mighty Lost Gardens of Heligan (1.6 miles).

Leave the car behind and reach Heligan by the Pentewan Valley Trail which links St Austell to the gardens and to Pentewan via a scenic valley; you can hire bikes on the trail or take to the water at Pentewan which has a fine beach and two sailing clubs with boats for hire (there’s also a St Austell Ales pub here for real ale adorers).

Use several more bike routes around Pensagillas and Pentewan to reach more top Cornish attractions: the fishing port of Mevagissey with fish and chip shops for the casual and top fish restaurants for the connoisseur; the clay trails around St Austell; the old port of Charlestown with its Shipwreck and Heritage Centre; and the huge Eden Project less than seven miles away from Pensagillas, where discounted tickets are available to those who arrive by pedal power.

Mountain bikers and the energetic should beetle towards the bike routes of Bodmin Moor, taking a pitstop at Jamaica Inn, an almost essential stop in these parts. The inn, the setting of Daphne du Maurier’s smuggling novel of the same name, has a museum telling the tales of Cornish smugglers throughout the centuries, and apparently several ghosts too.

Natch there are sandy beaches, beauteous bays and tiny villages handy all around too, or take the kids to fly at the Cornish theme parks and play centres peppered around the county: Flambards at Helston, Kidz World at St Austell and Springfields Fun Park and Pony Centre at St Columb should keep small ones out of mischief for three trips at least, with the Crealy Great Adventure Park probably OK for another two.
