General

  • Attractive park in meadows and woodland, family-run for generations
  • Stream and lake on site for fishing
  • Takeaway and bar available in high season

Ever been to one of those parks which have been run by the same family for generations and those who have been welcoming guests for decades? Pensagillas Park, at Cornwall’s St Austell, has been run by the Kent family for six generations and its oodles of park pride provide a pristine place for pitching up.

Pensagillas has had guests staying here since 1970; it’s all looked after and laid out to be tidy and attractive, with trees, hedging, shrubs and a tarmac roadway connecting the grass meadows. The pitches are in a five-acre field at the end of a private drive, with Cornish countryside views to hand anywhere you pitch up.

Once you’ve sorted your berth, have a stroll around the park meadows and woodlands, give an enthusiastic greeting to the farm animals or explore the farmland at the other end of the private drive beside the camping field: there are footpaths leading from here as well as fields to wander.

And bring your rod: there’s an old mill with stream on site for contemplative casting off (and/or picnics), and a two and a half acre coarse fishing lake on site to land roach, tench, golden rudd and carp of up to 28lb.

The well-maintained shower block comes with covered outside areas for washing-up and a laundry room with washers and dryers. Wifi is available on site.

During high season, there’s a takeaway and a cosy bar serving beer and cider, with more tipples and food available in the local village a couple of miles away.

The site was perfect, lovely view of the lake and particularly enjoyed the two Pomeranian Geese that would come to see us every morning. The facilities are excellent, nice hot showers, clean bathrooms, great onsite food which was a boon on our first evening when we arrived later than planned. Good little shop for essentials, great dog walking area. Free wifi in bar area. Beautiful surroundings and the owners couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating.

Spacious & secluded pitch. Beautiful views. Lovely and quiet in the mornings. Clean, well maintained showers and toilets. David & Katya, the owners, are friendly and extremely helpful, especially when my gearbox objected to the Cornish hills! Free icepack freezing.Tasty cooked breakfasts, much appreciated bar and dining options useful when the rain kept coming. Open fires. Good dog walking area. Enjoyed a meal at the Crown Inn in St Ewe, which is a half-hour, hilly walk.

    Disliked:

There was a strong smell of urine in the ladies toilets near the bar, possibly caused by the nappy bin?

My wife and I stayed in our VW T5 LWB CAMPERVAN , on a pitch overlooking the Lake for 4 days it was incredibably quiet, AND BEAUTIFUL VIEWS, lots of fish to be caught in the lake if your a fisherman, we paid £18 per night, which is very good at peak season time, we were only short 2 min: walk to all facilities, i.e.: showers toilets, bar and restaurant, the owners are very nice genuine people who are friendly and a good laugh in the bar at night, there very easy going , and work damned hard to keep the place clean and tidy, we sat in one of there lovely leather settees and watched POLDARK ON there massive widescreen TV (as you should when In Cornwall) the drinks are very reasonably priced, and also the food, they have very nice quality dining tables and chairs, toilets spotless and showers nice and hot, AND FREE , the location is only minutes away to most places i.e.: Mevagissy, portmellon, Gorman Haven ,St Austell, where you can find a good choice of supermarkets, also the Eden project etc: we loved our very relaxing stay, we were initially there for my wife to do a SUP lesson at Portmellon harbour, and it was great location, lovely pub and beach etc, Many thanks to the owners for being friendly and helpful, WELL BE BACK George and Ruth Wheeler from Oxford , stayed from the 4th-7th August 2017

Fishing lake, either for a walk or to fish. Good breakfast and bar area. Campfires allowed. Good showers. V

    Disliked:

Too many noisy children, a play area for them would be better rather than them running around the tents and caravans.

Directions

From the M5, turn off at junction 31 to Okehampton/Exeter and go on to the A30. Stay on the A30 for about 70 miles then take the first exit left for St Austell. Go through Bugle until you come to a mini roundabout and go straight over.

Coming in to St Austell round the sharp right-hand bend, go through two sets of traffic lights. At the T-junction, turn right for Truro (A390). Follow this road for approx 2-3 miles and fork left for the B3287 (the sign should say Tregony). Follow this road for 2 miles. At the end of the road is a T-junction - turn left at this junction. Follow this road for one mile.

You will see the sign for Pensagillas at the end of the drive. Turn right into the drive and the campsite is a few hundred yards down the drive on the left. If you have any problems please do not hesitate to contact us.

Local attractions

Pensagillas Park has tourist information on site if you’re stuck for info on what to do, but any problem you're likely to have will be trying to narrow your list down... Pensagillas is at the busy St Austell and one of the closest parks to one of Cornwall’s biggest attractions, the mighty Lost Gardens of Heligan (1.6 miles).

Leave the car behind and reach Heligan by the Pentewan Valley Trail which links St Austell to the gardens and to Pentewan via a scenic valley; you can hire bikes on the trail or take to the water at Pentewan which has a fine beach and two sailing clubs with boats for hire (there’s also a St Austell Ales pub here for real ale adorers).

Use several more bike routes around Pensagillas and Pentewan to reach more top Cornish attractions: the fishing port of Mevagissey with fish and chip shops for the casual and top fish restaurants for the connoisseur; the clay trails around St Austell; the old port of Charlestown with its Shipwreck and Heritage Centre; and the huge Eden Project less than seven miles away from Pensagillas, where discounted tickets are available to those who arrive by pedal power.

Mountain bikers and the energetic should beetle towards the bike routes of Bodmin Moor, taking a pitstop at Jamaica Inn, an almost essential stop in these parts. The inn, the setting of Daphne du Maurier’s smuggling novel of the same name, has a museum telling the tales of Cornish smugglers throughout the centuries, and apparently several ghosts too.

Natch there are sandy beaches, beauteous bays and tiny villages handy all around too, or take the kids to fly at the Cornish theme parks and play centres peppered around the county: Flambards at Helston, Kidz World at St Austell and Springfields Fun Park and Pony Centre at St Columb should keep small ones out of mischief for three trips at least, with the Crealy Great Adventure Park probably OK for another two.
