General

  • Relaxed and award-winning family-centred site near Saltash
  • Immaculate amenities including family washrooms and a makeup area
  • Shop, takeaway and off-licence

There probably isn’t enough room on the mantelpiece for all the awards heaped on Dolbeare Park.

Apart from all its green creds and bling, this Saltash site is the place to come to if you want a traditional, laid back kind of holiday – it’s family-centred, there’s no bar or clubhouse (although you can buy scrummy Cornish scrumpy, wine and beer in the park off-licence), and summer events include barbecues, cricket, rounders, archery, boules and squaring up on the giant outdoor chess board or over the giant Connect4. You might even see a few rabbits hopping about in the evenings...

Amenities at Dolbeare are of the highest standards – the immaculate shower block has underfloor heating, family washrooms, up-to-date disabled facilities, hairdryers and a ladies’ makeup area with an electric point for hair straighteners.

The shop on site sells freshly baked bread and local produce, and if you’re too relaxed even to make a sandwich there’s a takeway too. Tuck into the one of the yummy bacon baguettes while browsing through the Dolbeare information centre where there are maps and guides on Devon and Cornwall, as well as the park’s own guides on essential topics such as where to eat, where to walk and the local beaches.

Relatively small site compared to some. All pitches fairly near the facilities. Some good pub Restaurants within an easy drive.

Lots of interesting places like Plymouth, Polperro and various fishing villlages in easy range of a car.

    Disliked:

The junction with the A38 can be a bit intimidating as there seems to be a lot of traffic on that road and it can be difficult to find a gap in traffic.

In terms of the site there was only one toilet block. Possibly this would be a problem if the site was very busy - we went in November and it was fine.

The site entrance barrier is oddly designed basically when leaving the site you need to go to the right of the divide rather than the left. But this is a very minor point.

My biggest issue is the wifi. You can buy access to this via either Voucher or online. I bought seven days access which expired after 2 days and then 1 days access that expired within 12 hours before giving up. The issue is there is a data cap on usage. But bear in mind I did not download or stream any videos while I was there, the cap is set at too low a level - I ended up feeling I had been cheated and ripped off.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and we are disappointed to find that we did not meet your expectations during your winter visit.

During the winter, the park is quiet and completely different to the joyful sunny park of the summer. Winter finds us doing the chores, such as accounts, planning, filing - all the tedious jobs that need doing. We do open the shop twice a day, the toilet block is kept clean and heated (not all of the toilet block was open when you were here), the information centre kept updated, the rest is busily leaf collecting and grass cutting. We do not provide any other facilities during this time of year, apart from showing guests to pitches and opening the shop. However, there is always someone on site if you need any help.

When we gave you your barrier card deposit back on the day of departure, you were asked if you enjoyed your stay, you did not mention any issues.

There were no children here during your visit, during the summer we have lots of fun, from nature trail hunts, easter egg hunts, we organise rounders, footy and cricket - more often children versus Mum's and Dads! Great fun. Takeaway pizza's this year were a great hit with the children too.

We were surprised to see your review and disappointed since you could have told us whilst you were here that you were experiencing problems with the WiFi. We could have then shown you your usage and explained why we do what we do.

Being located in the country and in Cornwall, our wifi here is limited, saying that we have both 3G and 4G coverage on the park. Wifi bandwidth is between 5mb/s and 8mb/s, which we limit to ensure fair access to all our guests.

When you purchased your WiFi online, it clearly showed the bandwidth caps and time caps, whichever came first. We do not hide anything. We have analysed your usage and can see that your HP Compaq accessed the WiFi on 16 Nov and between 08:30am and 08:45am you used 700mb, which is 50% of a week's worth of usage. This indicates a large download probably due to a software update since microsoft often do updates on Tuesdays. The usage during your stay was 14 Nov from 16.21 361mb, 15 Nov from 07.31 250mb, 15 Nov from 16.00 60mb, 15 Nov from 21.53 9.57mb, 16 Nov from 07.45 744mb, 16 Nov from 15.44 138mb, 17 Nov from 08.30 64.42mb.

You may not have enjoyed your stay here, but we do hope you enjoyed exploring this lovely part of Cornwall whilst you were here.

Kind regards

We are really pleased that you liked our lovely park and our great staff. Very rarely, if we have an easterly wind, we do hear the kennels. However, as the wind is predominantly south westerlies, we do not hear them.

we really enjoyed staying here; the staff were super friendly and helpful, facilities were clean and the site did not feel too busy at all (perhaps the forecast storm had something to do with that though!). We only stayed for one night and didn't explore the local area although I think Looe beach is only 15 Minutes away. We did lots on the site itself though as the staff have made a lovely nature trail and a quiz for the kids. the little shop is very useful too and the laundry facilities are good.

Local attractions

Cornwall gets busy in the summer, but you wouldn’t know it from this peaceful corner which most visitors whizz past without stopping...the only problem will be trying to narrow down what to do from the tons of active and relaxing things on offer in this almost forgotten corner of the south-east.

The Rame Peninsula is a must, especially Cawsand and Kingsand and walking around the coastal path, and surfers should take their boards to the beautiful beaches of Whitsand Bay.

The area also has some excellent diving such as Scylla at Whitsand Bay, and golfers can tee off too at St Mellion just a few miles away from the park.

Canny campers can go tree surfing and off-road mountain biking up in the Tamar Valley, quarry jump at nearby Adrenalin Quarry, canoe the Tamar River with Canoe Tamar, or take the Plym Trail or Camel Trail cycle paths for family exploring.

History and culture are abundant too, with several National Trust properties in the area as well as other cultural spots including Antony House and Gardens, famous for Alice in Wonderland; Saltram House featured in Sense and Sensibility and the former home of Sir Francis Drake, Buckland Abbey.

Also on the very long must-do list is a trip around Devon to take in highlights including Bigbury on Sea, walking on Dartmoor or just relaxing with a drink at the Noss Mayo pubs.

Plymouth shouldn’t be missed either, with the largest aquarium in the UK, a huge outdoor swimming pool and the Life Centre, with massive indoor pool, climbing centre, bowling, children's activities and a family activity centre.

Plymouth is also the spot for some fantastic food and restaurants, with full-on foodies also having the option to try the luscious location and food at The View restaurant, featured on Caroline Quentin's Cornwall and only 20 minutes from Dolbeare.

Must see

  • National Marine Aquarium (8.9 miles)
  • Dartmoor Zoological Park (13.8 miles)
  • Eden Project (20.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Cotehele (5.6 miles)
  • Cotehele Mill (5.6 miles)
