Why visit Polzeath?

Surf schools

The gently shelving sands at Polzeath beach produce just the right kind of waves for beginner surfers to try out their technique. And you won’t have to work out that technique for yourselves, as this small village is well served by places providing surf lessons and kit hire for all ages. If the idea of standing up on a board sounds a little ambitious, take to the breakers for a bit of bodyboarding instead.

Beach time

There’s no law to say you have to hit the waves in Polzeath – the sandy beach is just as welcoming for days of relaxing in a deckchair, splashing in the shallows or building sandcastles. For that reason, the village is a great spot for a family day out if you’ve got different ages to entertain: younger ones can happily dig in the sand while older/more active kids take their first surfing steps (and there’s plenty of ice cream and fish and chips to go around, too…)

Coast walks

Polzeath is at the western end of one of the parts of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – so it’s no surprise to find that this section of the South West Coast Path is particularly scenic. From the village you can walk to Rock, Lundy Bay or Trebetherick, or take a ramble around the headland known as The Rumps. Or, if you’re up to the challenge, try the trail all the way to Port Isaac – it’s likely to take most of the day, and there’s a fair bit of up-and-down along the way, but the views along the way make it all very much worth it.

Essential Polzeath days out

  • Once you’ve got the hang of surfing, take your board to the bigger waves of nearby Newquay

  • Make your way to Rock and hop on the ferry to Padstow for a tasty lunch

  • Delve into history and myth at Tintagel Castle – legend has it that King Arthur spent his childhood at this coastal fort

  • Take a trip to pretty Port Isaac to see the real-life setting of TV's Doc Martin series

  • Spend a day meeting animals and hitting the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park

Literary connections

Former Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman settled in nearby Trebetherick in his later years, and was inspired by the local scenery when he penned the poem Greenaway. If you’re after a bit of inspiration of your own, follow the easy four-mile John Betjeman walk from Polzeath up to Brea Hill and on to St Enodoc church, where the poet was laid to rest.

Secret sands

The main beach in Polzeath is generally buzzing with all sorts of activity, but if you’re in the mood for something a little quieter you won’t have far to go. A little way west is Greenaway Bay, where the sands and rockpools are accessed via stone steps that tend to keep the crowds away – as it’s west-facing it’s a particularly fine spot for a beach barbecue or fire as the sun goes down.
