General

  • Eco-friendly site one mile from Luxulyan Valley with views of Par Bay
  • A 10-minute drive from Eden Project; a short walk from Luxulyan Valley
  • On-site green energy and local history displays; pubs and shops nearby

Rainforest biomes and a pretty woodland valley are not far away from The Meadow Barns, three miles from Par in Cornwall. With views over Par Bay, this site is just one mile from Luxulyan Valley (that means you’ll be half an hour’s walk from a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a viaduct and river) and 10 minutes from Eden Project’s huge biomes.

The site itself is rather green-fingered, as it’s a centre for green awareness, history and learning. Landscaped into terraced wildflower banks, there’s a quarter of an acre of meadows around the site with outdoor displays about green energy and local mining history. The buildings also incorporate natural materials such as granite and timber, making up part of an extensive eco-building project.

Between 10am and 5pm, the site’s centre runs day visits for small groups to go on socially distanced storytelling walks, but after these hours, the whole site is available for you to walk around. Handily, there’s a large outdoor classroom that’s sheltered – though be warned, the ground is hard.

Just a two-minute drive away from the A390, it’s easy to get around Cornwall from here. Handily, there are pubs, shops and restaurants in and around Par within five minutes’ drive of the site, so food will never be too far away.

Me and my wife had a short but amazing stay at meadow barns. We are really impressed by the place. It’s very peaceful, quiet and the view is amazing! We couldn’t have asked for more! It’s perfect for what we wanted. The camp site is very well maintained and full of stories in every part of it. Caroline, the host is very hospitable and knowledgable of the local
Place. We’ve never met a host as generous and accommodating as she is. She answered all our questions about the place, even when we arrived late, she welcomed us as if we are family. The pitch is in great condition, we are free to use the private kitchen and the private toilet.
Everything that we need is there. It’s spotless clean too.
She also gave us a tour of the place and talked about the brief history of the place. She recommended us places to go, and restaurants to eat nearby. (She even printed us a map. Which is very helpful since we are new in this place).
If you want a place that is not over crowded, peaceful, with stunning views and a very hospitable host, then stay at the meadow barns! We will definitely revisit again in the future. Also, do not miss the walks with Caroline where she talks about the history of the Cornish copper mines. It’s very interesting!

From the manager...

This is an inaccurate description on so many levels. It arises from a person who sadly had a horrible journey driving all the way from Leeds for only 2 nights, arrived in drizzle and mist and struggled to put up their tent. I think they then chose to drive to a quite distant fast-food outlet and probably had to queue for ages. But there is a very nice pub only 4 minutes away, by car. And plenty of other options within a couple of miles.
No other visitors have had a problem pitching their tent on this ground. They have greatly appreciated the solitude, and received my input of local knowledge, maps, guided walks and stories etc very gratefully. By the way, Joanne twice described me in texts as 'a lovely lady', but has chosen not to share that here.
With ref to rubbish bins, the booklet received by guests explains fully where and how to recycle. This is part of the Green Awareness ethos on site. Unfortunately this family chose not to take part.
When someone has a problem with their accommodation surely it makes sense to talk about it? But no, even as they departed I did not realise they were leaving for good. I had already said they could pitch on another area. I could have offered use of a different building, further from my windows, with full kitchen and shower. And clearly, a replacement set of toilet rolls would instantly have been supplied, if I had known of the requirement.
Yes, there may be some lessons for me here, as a new provider. I have already made a number of small adjustments.
But there are lessons for prospective visitors too. First I suggest is not to travel such a distance for 2 nights in High Season. Second is to read and digest online descriptions carefully before you book. And finally would be to communicate better, if something isn't working.
