General

  • Award-winning park in a countryside setting near Newquay
  • Bar/bistro on site and three pubs within walking distance
  • Less than seven miles from Newquay airport

What could be cleverer than flying to Cornwall for your holiday and thus avoiding motorway madness and hours of 'Are we there yet?' from the kids? Travelling light and posting your kit ahead of you, that's what.

Tremendous Trethiggey Touring Park is less than seven miles from the airport at Newquay and frequently has campers to stay who do this very thing – what good sense. But it's also jolly sensible to bring wheels here too, as once you arrive there are lots of jolly good things on site to get you into holiday mood.

The Stable bar and bistro will see you sorted June, July, August and the May bank holidays for big breakfasts, evening meals, takeaways and lashings of excellent Cornish ale – you'll forget about the motorway halfway down pint one – or you could hire fishing kit as soon as you arrive then cast off at the small but well-stocked fishing lake to land carp, bream or roach.

Wifi is available across the whole park for a reasonable fee, and to keep the kids busy, the Trethiggey team has added an adventure playground and two games rooms with pool tables, TV and games machines.

Trethiggey's also a carefully considered wildlife site if you want to have a species spotting wander: there are over 4,000 shrubs and trees on its countryside setting, badgers frequently visit, foxes live in the nearby fields and you should also see kingfishers, jays, buzzards and rabbits. Nature signs are dotted around the park detailing all the critters that live and visit there.

Amenities at Trethiggey are kept spotless by the friendly team and include two shower and toilet blocks, heated in winter and each with disabled facilities, free hot water and washing-up sinks.

Trethiggey welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Amazingly friendly and helpful staff. It's a wonderful place to stay, the bar and restaurant is a lovely social place if you want or a nice place to grab some food. The bus service to Newquay and Truro is just outside the entrance (it's £1 cheaper into Newquay if you walk 5 minutes up the road)

    Disliked:

Bar and restaurant doesn't open until 6pm, it would have been nice if it opened at 5pm

This site is family run with very friendly helpful staff. The site is a reasonable size with 2 separate toilet/shower blocks with washing up sinks, which are serviced daily, as well as a kids play area.
As the majority of the pitches are planned between trees & shrubs you get the feeling of space and not being stacked into regimental rows.
The Stable Bestro & bar serves fantastic home cooked food at a reasonable price, which can be eaten there or take away.
The site is dog friendly & even allow dogs into the bistro/bar which allowed us to enjoy a few meals with our four legged member of the family in tow.

    Disliked:

The only dislike was the fact that we had to leave & didn't book for longer.
However we will be returning next year & definitely booking for a longer stay.

The camp site it's self was ok.

    Disliked:

The toilets had excrement smeared on the walls for the first 4 days of being there. Getting pitched right next to the bins and getting woken up by people using them at all hours. Kids running around from 6:30am and kicking football off the van they even managed to smash some of the windows in the games room...

From the manager...

Can’t let this go without comment I’m afraid.
To say “the entire place needs a good clean” is a sweeping and, dare I say, careless and highly misleading observation.
I very much doubt if these two guys even saw the whole place which does, after all, cover 15 acres.
If they were that observant then they would have known that we have a rigid cleaning regime for both our shower blocks. In peak season they are cleaned at least three times a day. We know, because, as a family owned park, we are involved in the process ourselves.
And yes, kids do run around…we are, after all, a family park. That’s what we are here for.
True, a little lad, aged 10 did throw a pool table ball and cracked a window..He certainly didn’t “smash windows”…his parents had words with him but it was hardly a criminal act.
I also find it odd the reviewer complains about being pitched by the “bins.” They were in our “non electric “field where there was plenty of room and they could have moved anywhere. So why didn’t they?
As a rule, we don’t accept single sex parties. But we try to be fair and as there were only two of them we did take them. Other parks around here would not have.

We were so very impressed from the very start of our holiday, and the friendly welcome from Chris who said she had phoned to check where we were (guessing we may be lost?) which was very thoughtful. Everything at the campsite is so well thought out and no surprise Trethiggey is a award winning campsite for tents motorhomes caravans etc. Never once needed to wait or queue at shower block and the hot water was always great. The cleanliness was very good considering us campers in and out. There is internet at the site for small charge and when my husband had problems Chris was happy to help. All the staff so hard working and friendly when needed. The shop and laundry room and even games room for youngsters are a bonus. The on camp bar had the very friendly team and Graham the man at the bar was always so pleasant. Lots of food choices and the cooked breakfast was lovely too! We were last minute campers flying over with a pup tent and so we ate every night at the camp bar, as it felt like our local in no time at all. Great for my husband to enjoy the Cornish beer and not driving! All the other holiday makers were all friendly too when passing, but otherwise had privacy in our little tent to relax. Well based also to visit all other areas of Cornwall. Well done Trethiggey team you get a 10 from us! Karen and ian spain xx

Local attractions

Food, glorious food: Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant is nearby at Watergate Bay, and it's a mere 16 miles or so from Newquay to Padstow and the four fish restaurants of Rick Stein.

Or have surf, glorious surf, other watery sports and the building of many sandcastles with the kids at the glorious beaches of Newquay, with plenty of pubs, restaurants and clubs around to relax/party in once you've dried off.

On Newquay's outskirts, put cheesy grins on the kids' faces with a whisk around award-winning and all-weather DairyLand Farm World, one of several kid-friendly days out around the area within an accessible drive: see also Flambards theme park at Helston, the Eden Project near St Austell, Crealy Great Advenure Park at Wadebridge and an unusual but gripping day out at Padstow's National Lobster Hatchery.

Elsewhere around Cornwall, pick your passion and set off: historians can explore the old tin mines of World Heritage Site St Agnes or Cornwall's many historic and National Trust houses.

Marine enthusiasts should have a look at Newquay's Blue Reef Aquarium and the National Maritime Museum at Falmouth, and arty types can make their way to the galleries and artistic atmosphere of lovely St Ives.
