General

  • Award-winning park in a countryside setting near Newquay
  • Bar/bistro on site and three pubs within walking distance
  • Less than seven miles from Newquay airport

What could be cleverer than flying to Cornwall for your holiday and thus avoiding motorway madness and hours of 'Are we there yet?' from the kids? Travelling light and posting your kit ahead of you, that's what.

Tremendous Trethiggey Touring Park is less than seven miles from the airport at Newquay and frequently has campers to stay who do this very thing – what good sense. But it's also jolly sensible to bring wheels here too, as once you arrive there are lots of jolly good things on site to get you into holiday mood.

The Stable bar and bistro will see you sorted June, July, August and the May bank holidays for big breakfasts, evening meals, takeaways and lashings of excellent Cornish ale – you'll forget about the motorway halfway down pint one – or you could hire fishing kit as soon as you arrive then cast off at the small but well-stocked fishing lake to land carp, bream or roach.

Wifi is available across the whole park for a reasonable fee, and to keep the kids busy, the Trethiggey team has added an adventure playground and two games rooms with pool tables, TV and games machines.

Trethiggey's also a carefully considered wildlife site if you want to have a species spotting wander: there are over 4,000 shrubs and trees on its countryside setting, badgers frequently visit, foxes live in the nearby fields and you should also see kingfishers, jays, buzzards and rabbits. Nature signs are dotted around the park detailing all the critters that live and visit there.

Amenities at Trethiggey are kept spotless by the friendly team and include two shower and toilet blocks, heated in winter and each with disabled facilities, free hot water and washing-up sinks.

Trethiggey welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Great site with nice clean facilities and quiet. 11/04/2018

Loved the hot showers and clean facilities. The kids playground was a nice touch and my kids loved it.

The owners were polite and friendly and even walked us to our pitch. Sadly, due to a whole lot of rain the grass was sodden and we had to be careful getting onto our hardstanding, but it soon dried up when the sun came out.

The kids loved the rabbits that happily came out with people around.

I guess the lanes could be slightly wider if you wanted to avoid churning up the grass, but that is not essential.

Some of the pitches were are quite a slope, however the owners had kindly prepared some blocks and slabs to help with the levelling.

There is a bar and shop on-site, which would be busier in high season.

Despite being close to a main road, it was quiet at night.

All in all a lovely quiet campsite with a nice mix of spaces and mobile homes.

There were a few pitched caravans so clearly a nice place to be all year round.

    Disliked:

Wifi was extra and I couldn't test the speed of it as I wasn't prepared to pay extra for it.

There were some package deals for several days. It is provided by an external company.

Not a fault per se, but something to note.

My boyfriend & I had a lovely stay despite the wind and occasional rain!
We liked how friendly and attentive the staff/family were that run Trethiggey.
Our pitch was in a good spot surrounded by shrubs and trees and was pretty dry considering how much rain Cornwall has had recently. We were also a very short walk away from one of the toilet/shower blocks - clean and nicely heated with warm showers; there were hair dryers too. It would have been good if the showers stayed on without having to be pressed to stay on (otherwise they turn off.)
The park was nice and quiet during our stay (apart from the pigeons in the mornings), but the few people we did bump into were friendly. I can imagine in the peak Summer months there would be a good buzz and atmosphere at the park.
We enjoyed playing pool in the games room (next to the toilet block), especially when it was raining.
We thoroughly enjoyed the 2 evenings we got to relax, eat and drink in the stable bar and bistro - very reasonably priced and fantastic homemade food with generous portions.
The Wi-fi was a good connection, although we did feel it was a bit pricey.
The park was in a great location, a short drive to Newquay and other towns. There were also a few lovely pubs a short walk away.
We would recommend Trethiggey to our friends and family and would come back to stay.

    Disliked:

Only 1 thing - That the stable bar and bistro wasn't open the whole week as it was such a nice little place BUT this was completely understandable as mid-week was not busy enough in the park.

Staff were lovely and helpful especially when My van needed a jump start

    Disliked:

Lack of night time lights around site, shop not open, and toilet block needs updating and some heating put in.

From the manager...

A little puzzled by this one!
For the record, both our shower blocks have heating and both have been renovated in the last 3 years in an attractive contemporary style.
As for the shop, we don’t open it in winter because demand is low and we‘d be throwing away unused stock faster than we could sell it!
Anyway, the village spar shop is just 5 minutes up the road!!
We only open in winter to provide a convenient stopover facility for people who, like this reviewer, find that the vast majority of parks around here are closed
Economically it would, indeed, make more sense for us to close too but we like to think we are providing a service which is helpful to the few who travel in the colder months.

The super pitch was great, all amenities for the waste water and water feed.
Ideal location for seeing the beautiful sites around the area.
Very quite site, informed by site owners that people had can canceled due to the high winds.
Showers were hot and at a good standard.
We were given a choice of 3 pitches.

    Disliked:

Cob webs full of spiders and flies around the windows in the gents and ladies shower blocks.
No lighting at all around the camp. At night it was in Total, darkness, you needed a torch to go to toilet block.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food: Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant is nearby at Watergate Bay, and it's a mere 16 miles or so from Newquay to Padstow and the four fish restaurants of Rick Stein.

Or have surf, glorious surf, other watery sports and the building of many sandcastles with the kids at the glorious beaches of Newquay, with plenty of pubs, restaurants and clubs around to relax/party in once you've dried off.

On Newquay's outskirts, put cheesy grins on the kids' faces with a whisk around award-winning and all-weather DairyLand Farm World, one of several kid-friendly days out around the area within an accessible drive: see also Flambards theme park at Helston, the Eden Project near St Austell, Crealy Great Advenure Park at Wadebridge and an unusual but gripping day out at Padstow's National Lobster Hatchery.

Elsewhere around Cornwall, pick your passion and set off: historians can explore the old tin mines of World Heritage Site St Agnes or Cornwall's many historic and National Trust houses.

Marine enthusiasts should have a look at Newquay's Blue Reef Aquarium and the National Maritime Museum at Falmouth, and arty types can make their way to the galleries and artistic atmosphere of lovely St Ives.

Must see

  • Newquay Zoo (2.0 miles)
  • Lappa Valley Steam Railway (2.2 miles)
