General

  • Craft and countryside site three miles from Newquay
  • With popup Victorian tearoom, classes and workshops
  • Communal feast nights serving stonebaked pizza, curry and hog roast

Cor. It only opened in summer 2014, but Newquay campsite Coastal Valley Camping and Crafts has added all sorts of clever little touches already: for example, this might be the only campsite in Cornwall with its own popup Victorian tearoom…

The crafty plans for Coastal Valley since its first season include expanding the current weaving and painting classes into a full curriculum for avid artistes, covering bushcraft skills, silk painting and woodworking among others – all available for a reasonable extra charge.

Although it’s only three miles from busy Newquay, Coastal Valley is in such a cannily rural location that you won’t see a single road or house from the site, just the site stream, cracking Cornish countryside all around and a blaze of colour in spring and summer from the silver aspen trees, gorse, daffodils, agapanthus and buddleia.

(If you visit in autumn, there are berry many opportunities for foraging blackberries, rosehips and sloes, to which you might say ‘bramble brandy and sloe gin’.) Three beaches, including the two and a half mile stretch of spectacular Watergate Bay, are within walking distance via more cracking countryside.

Other crafty additions on site include communal feast nights starring stonebaked pizza, curry and hog roast, a nature trail for wily wildlife watchers to spot rabbits, occasional deer and the resident stoat, and picnic tables and benches peppered all around for alfresco eats.

Pitches and facilities are set up equally shrewdly: guests in the well-maintained grass ‘touring ring’ have access to award-winning bathroom facilities with free hot showers; and another adroit little touch is the well-equipped self-catering kitchen with gas hob cookers, grills, microwave, two fridges and a freezer, double sink and drainer. All in all, really rather resourceful…

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including bushcraft workshops and classes are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 3 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

There is limited electric on site to run the communal facilities, charge mobile phones and for a shared hook-up to recharge caravan batteries.

Due to a domestic calendar clash we were not able to stay at Coastal Valley Camp and Crafts. So on the day I called to site to ask if we could reschedule. The member of staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. The service was exemplary. We will be taking our break later in the year.

Nice clean and quiet site, went full on and hired the Airstream for four nights and loved the experience.
Andy and Tanya were very friendly and helpful and worked hard to make everyone's stay the best it could be.
Site is down a track from the Trevelgue road (off main road at Port Beach) and it is quiet because it is at the end of the road.
Facilities excellent (Toilets/Showers very clean and communal kitchen block) and an environmental emphasis really make the site stand out.
There is no Wifi but mobiles got signal but you are supposed to be "getting away from it all"

Owners very welcoming and accommodating , the campsite is well kept and quite of a night time , the shower and toilet block are well kept and clean , plenty of hot water for the showers . Pitch sizes are generous , and the ground is level , with not too many stones for getting your tent pegs in ! The communal kitchen with cooking facilities is an added bonus with a fridge that keeps the drinks nice and cool.

    Wonderful little community feel
Fab friendly and helpful owners (Tanya and Andy ) - very personal
    Beautiful picturesque site
Clean well designed showers and toilets
Tanya and Andy encourage people to share and recycle everything when they leave instead of binning things, such as as food in the ace little communal kitchen, buckets spades
Funky tasty visiting little food vans
Although we didn't actually end up taking part, the craft mornings are such a lovely idea...a friend actually made her wedding rings in the silver workshop!
Made my daughters day when she was asked to walk the rabbit!
Love the glamping field and the cooool silver air stream!
Plenty of water and electricity points

    Disliked:

Communal hand towel in the bathroom! But I'm a germphobe! !
Lack of phone signal or Internet!
Little bit too far to walk to pub!

Excellent all round camp site. Nice flat pitches well marked out and ease of access to electric hook up. Very friendly staff that were welcoming and informative. The facilities at this site I would say are probably the best I have come across. The shower and toilet block were modern, immaculate and well maintained. Even down to soap dispensers and hand towels provided. The communal kitchen even offered a fridge, freezer, microwave and assorted condiments and various items that previous campers had left for all to use. Again, nice and clean kitchen facilities that would prove valuable for both electric and non-electric pitches. The site itself is a good size but not too big that you were on top of each other and I found the shower and kitchen free to use when needed, not like some other camp sites I have stayed at during high season Lovely surroundings in a real friendly, peaceful environment. Highly recommended.

    Disliked:

Distance from Newquay town centre and shops. If you are planning to perhaps have a few nights out or to visit the zoo or Fistral Beach they are a bit of a walk. Not that you would expect to find a campsite in the middle of a town centre but bear in mind that if you forget something, it's a bit of a trek to the nearest supermarket. I would guess that the town centre is around 4 miles away and Fistral Beach around 5 miles. If you're not fussed about any of these then this is the ideal location for you. Dont be put off by this as the site itself makes up for it and the lovely Porth beach is not to far away.

Directions

On the Newquay Rd, A3059, take the turning right to the RAF camp/ Treloy Park and left down a little unnamed road. It is very narrow and steep. Ignore satnavs that say turn right into Hendra Paul Cottages, instead continue ALL the way to the bottom and at the T-junction turn right (not left like a lot of sat navs tell you to) then follow directions below from the horse stables.
N.B. Touring caravans and motorhomes are strongly advised NOT to take this route, instead continue on the Newquay A3059 road to Quintrell Downs, Newquay. Take a right and then another right and at 2 double islands follow sign post to Porth, and follow directions from Travelogue Rd below.

Follow the signs to Watergate Bay, off the B3276 Watergate Road. Take the Trevelgue Road for 1.5 miles. Ignore the 'no through road' sign, pass the stables on your left and at the bottom of the road you should see our sign.

Turn right, keep the stream on your right, and take the road on to the site between 2 pampas grasses.

Please do not turn right by Smugglers Campsite (some satnavs suggest this) - this will take you the wrong side of the valley.

Local attractions

Although it’s a tad tricky to pick a ‘best north Cornwall beach’, the sands and waves of Watergate Bay are a first stop for many visitors to this part of the coast, whether they want to bake gently on the sand or hit the surf with a new board from one of the surf shops.

Once a hard day of sunbathing/surfing has been had, amble your way gently to one of the well-regarded Watergate Bay restaurants: Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall and the Beach Hut are both popular spots and, as might be expected, come with a side order of sand and sea views.

Celeb food fans also have the four Rick Stein restaurants at Padstow eight miles away to make their way through; walk or bike it all off afterwards at the Camel Trail (or trot along on horseback if you’re feeling particularly full).

Whipisderry beach on the north coast road just past Porth is another early port of call for visitors to Newquay and its surroundings, and was named one of the best 20 beaches in Europe by beachcombers at the Sunday Times. It’s less busy than Watergate Bay even at the height of summer.

At low tide, dig into the rockpools to see what you can find, or take a torch and explore the cavernous caves including the Cathedral Cavern and its tunnels, the Boulder Cavern and the Banqueting Hall. (Whipisderry isn’t lifeguarded, so check the tide times carefully if you are planning to cave.)

Also around Newquay, Fistral beach and Mawgan Porth are other big pulls for surfers, but once out of the water there’s lots to do on land too: acclaimed Newquay Zoo and the Blue Aquarium Reef, Newquay Golf Club and its spectacular views over the Atlantic, sea fishing and boat hire all along the coast, and family days out at Buccaneer Bay (aaaarrr) or Dairyland Farm World.

The Eden Project, one of Cornwall’s most famous attractions, is about 15 miles from Coastal Valley.
